6. To the hms belfast shoutwark
HMS Belfast’s history includes the protection of artic convoys, the hunt that
finally sunk the feared German battle cruiser Scharnhorst, the bombardment
for D-Day, and later in her life action in support of South Korean and American
forces during the Korean War.
As a museum, HMS Belfast tells these tales, but perhaps more significantly
allows you to experience the atmosphere and day-to-day life cramped
together within a large ship’s company in a massive metal hull.
You can steer the ship on the bridge, traverse the frightening high walkways
through the engine room, see the how the hospital might have looked in
action, wonder at the hammocks packed in together, and check out the cost
of little luxuries in the ship’s shop.
The ship is now well looked after as part of the Imperial War Museum’s
collection. It’s an amazing piece of war history, right in the very heart of
London.
Please note that children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
