Editor's Notes
Primary School Chinese Language Curriculum 29 Apr 2006 Learning of languages begins at home and there is extensive research to show that young children have the capacity to learn more than one language. Other than English, You can help your child by encouraging him or her to speak to family members in Mandarin. For example, you can speak to your children in good English, whereas your spouse speaks to the children in good Mandarin. In this way, your children are exposed to both good Chinese and English, and it helps them subtly appreciate the learning of both languages. Besides daily interaction, it would be good if you could encourage your child to read good Chinese books. We have many community libraries where you can find good children fiction. To help your child to read in Chinese, you may want to select books with attractive illustrations and relatively fewer words. You may even want to get audio books or electronic books to help your child start reading. When he or she is more prepared, you can then choose books with more words. The main objective is to inculcate the love for reading, and to know that there are books written in both languages. As your child speaks and read more in Chinese, he or she will find learning the language in school easier.
Primary School Chinese Language Curriculum 29 Apr 2006 In addition, you may want to expose your children to good Chinese television programmes, for example, cartoons. This provides an alternative avenue for your child to be exposed to Chinese. There are more signage and advertisement boards in Chinese these days. You may want to tap on this community resource by encouraging your child to recognise and read them. If you are comfortable with speaking Mandarin, you may even want to engage them in conversations; if you aren’t, perhaps, you can ask your children to teach you how to read them. Just a note here: your child may not have learnt that many characters, it is quite normal that he or she may not be able to read all the characters. However, this can be exactly the platform for you to encourage your child to learn more.
Primary School Chinese Language Curriculum 29 Apr 2006 As your child learns the language, we hope you do not excessively correct their mistakes. As children start to learn the language, it is inevitable that they make some mistakes. By being overly eager in correcting the mistakes, you may destroy the confidence of him or her learning it. Instead of correcting the mistake, we encourage you to continue using the correct form with your children. Children are sensitive to languages, they will pick out the correct form from you quickly. More importantly, as they are willing to use the language, and will use it often, it helps them to acquire it better. Lastly, children learn best through games. It would be good to build up their language proficiency by allowing them to play meaningful games while using the language. If you can speak Mandarin, we encourage you to play with your child using Mandarin.
There are two possible implementation models: Ability Banding Model; and Pullout Model
Science fewer periods but equal weightage in PSLE.
FTGP will be conducted on Tuesday mornings. During FTGP, Form Teacher and Co-form teacher will have play activities with the girls so as to build a safe classroom environment and at the same time to enhance teacher student relationship. Your child will have a personal journal named ‘My FTGP Journal’ in which you can pen down your thoughts and feelings where appropriate and required.
At OLGC, our school values are consistently inculcated and reinforced by our dedicated teachers. We collectively speak the language of CHIP values by affirming our girls with CHIP badges and words of praise, guiding them to practise the values and reminding them when they have ‘forgotten’ to practise the value. Each term, a simple home activity is assigned for parents and daughter to do together to reinforce school value of the term. As our valued partners in education, I would like to invite you to speak the language of CHIP values at home , especially with reference to everyday habits of courtesies.
Shown in this slide is a page from My Personal Goals Action Plan template which allows our pupils to take ownership of personal goals they would like to achieve for the term. Please note that pupils do not need to fill up goals for all learning areas. Be involved as your child’s mentor by discussing the goals that she would like to achieve, guiding and encouraging her by providing positive feedback.
