4. Searching Effectively
There are a number of ways we can narrow down our
search results to find more accurate data.
1. Use keywords
– Pick out the most important words of you search and
only use those.
2. Use speech marks
– Put speech marks around a phrase “john of gaunt”
3. Use the minus symbol
– Put a minus symbol in front of a word you don‟t want to
use. “john of gaunt” -school
5. Task 1
Download the „Search Engine
Worksheet‟ from Jogle and complete
task 1.
Once you have completed this, try to
think of your own phrase that could be
completed and record the number of
hits for each search.
6. Task 2
You will now need to use at least 3
different search engines to find images
of gadgets that you may want in your
own smart home. You could search for
ipPads, iPods, laptops, games consoles…
You will need to record your findings on
the search engine worksheet.
7. Final Task
Think about which was the best search
criteria you used.
You will need to be prepared to share
this with the class and explain why it
was the best.
