As research libraries are being reconfigured in a network environment, two important trends are emerging. The first is to accelerate the sharing of infrastructure, either through collaborative services or with third party providers. The second is to engage more deeply with the research and learning processes of their campuses. As research and learning processes themselves change, the research library has to respond and this makes being responsive and open to learning very important.

The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services. Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

About the Webinar The impact of electronic content cannot be understated. Through constantly evolving technologies, electronic content has made its way into almost every facet of our lives. Platforms are evolving and improving at a breakneck pace, prices for devices are accessible in a way that they weren’t just a few years ago, the e-content is becoming richer and more interactive, and publishers are developing profitable business models to respond. Many higher education institutions find it an ongoing challenge to respond to the latest technology changes. Compounding this problem is the fact that electronic content has now become a priority and expectation for the academic and publishing community. NISO’s third virtual conference examines the issues and opportunities this rapid growth of electronic content has presented and challenged our community with, as well as thoughts on the future and how information organizations can successfully serve their patrons.

Simple, secure access to digital resources increases engagement and evidence indicates increased use of library resources leads to better outcomes. But there is a tension between ease of access, security, privacy and good user design. The RA21 initiative has reviewed the common tools available and will set standards for libraries and publishers to follow to deliver the best possible user experience. This session will look at some of the tools that can help set these standards

A digital agenda for library automation & networking. e-Granthalaya is a library automation software from National Informatics Centre, Department of Electronics & Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India. The software has been designed by a team of experts from software as well as Library and Information Science discipline. Using this software the libraries can automate in-house activities as well as user services. The software can be implemented either in stand-alone or in client-server mode where database and WebOPAC are installed on the server PC while the data entry program is installed on client PCs. The software provides LOCAL/LAN/WAN based data entry solutions for a cluster of libraries where a centralized database can be created with Union Catalog output. The software provides Web OPAC interface to publish the library catalog over Internet/Intranet. The software runs on Windows paltform Only, UNICODE Compliant ,thus, supports data entry in local language.

Co-authored with Steve Hellen. This presentation was delivered at Educause 2007 and derivatives at SunGard Summit 2007 and AACRAO Tech 2008. This presentation introduces wiki concepts and explore their use in project management and in supporting IT systems in higher education. JHU's implementation of a new student information system extensively uses an enterprise wiki, which will be highlighted, along with use cases, examples, and lessons learned. Note: The title has changed from its original submission ("Wiki and Project Management").
