This document provides information on what constitutes an annotated bibliography, including how annotations summarize, evaluate, and reflect on sources used for research. An annotated bibliography contains bibliographic information on sources as well as annotations that describe the subject and quality of each source and how it relates to the researcher's topic. Creating an annotated bibliography helps a researcher prepare for a research project by carefully reading sources and developing a thesis or argument.

2. What is a BIBLIOGRAPHY?
 list of sources (books, journals,
websites, periodicals, etc.) used for
research
 "references" or "works cited”
 just bibliographic information (i.e., the
author, title, publisher, etc.).

3. What does ANNOTATED mean?
 ANNOTATION is a summary and/or
evaluation
 annotated bibliography= summary
and/or evaluation of each source

4. SUMMARIZE:
 What are the main arguments?
 What is the point of this book or article?
 What topics are covered?
 Paraphrase

5. Assess:
 Evaluate the source
 Is this a useful source?
 How does this compare with other
sources in your bib?
 Reliable?
 Is this source biased or objective?
 What is the goal of this source?

6. Reflect:
 How does this source fit into your
research?
 How was this source helpful to you? Or
not?
 How does it help you shape your
argument?
 How can you use this source in your
research project?
 Has it changed how you think about
your topic?

 You are forced to read each source
more carefully
 Instead of just collecting data, you must
read critically
 It helps you develop your THESIS
