22. Working well - together
• RELATEDNESS: Creating relatedness and affinity between all team
members (care for one another). This also includes ‘who’s who’ in the
game – ie roles.
• VISION: Creating (from a blank slate) what is intended. This should be
aspirational. An example might be ‘coral reefs are healthy and abundant.’
• OPPORTUNITY: Finding (and creating), opportunities sufficient to fulfill the
vision.
• ACTION: Creating the actions that are critical to produce the desired
results.
• COMPLETION: No unresolved issues between team members. Clear them
as they come up, so you can pick up the phone or communicate as needed,
at any time.

This is what I’m here to offer – you decide
You’re going into a world that has not yet operated through collaboration
But you can change that if you leave today believing that collaboration is a better path.
Collaborative environments don’t exist, in general. You will have to be an
evangelist; you will may even need some super-powers to persist.
When you engage in it successfully, you can have both fun and joy

My ‘aha! Moment. - will share in a few minutes
My own personal story: thought I knew what team player was
Had worked on plenty of teams, helped people, been helped, taught courses, did my part
But realized my success depended on the failure of others in science; had to compete against 400+ other applicants for my faculty position
