George Eliot’s seventh novel:
“Middlemarch: A Study of provincial Life”,
Begun in 1869(1871-72).The novel was
appeared as a serial during 1871-1872.
GEORGE ELIOT
Virginia Woolf
suggests: “The magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is
one of the few English novels written for grown-up people”.
Martin Amis and Julian Barnes
have cited it as probably the greatest novel in the English
language.

MAJOR CHARACTERS IN
THE NOVEL
A picture of Dorothea Brooke
and
Will Ladislaw
 Sir James Chettam is in love with Dorothea, but he marries
Celia Brooke instead.
 Reverend Edward who just used Dorothea as a tool to
achieve his goal, but Dorothea came to know about his
reality after her marriage to him, in Rome.
 Dorothea seen Will Ladislaw as an unfortunate relative but
others doesn’t knows the actual circumstances.
 At the end of the novel Dorothea gives a shock to her
family informing that she will marry Will Ladislaw.
PLOT OF THE NOVEL
 Mr. Bulstrode, he is also religious zealot with a secret past.
 John Raffles blackmails him.
 Bulstrode was engaged with extensional financial dealings.
 Fortune to marry much more wealthy widow.
 Dorothea and Farebrother maintain faith in Lydgate.
 Main stories which are left suspended.
