2. Music Video
As the most iconic instrument of promotion for the artist I had
chosen, the music video was a vital part of the promotion
package as it will be used to engage and to illustrate the type
of genre and artist to its audience.
In this day of age, the media industry have constructed many
different conventions which are used in music videos, these
conventions help form the building blocks to what a standard
music video should ‘look like’ or even ‘feel like’. It was
important that when creating my music, I would refer to these
conventions as these would help produce a much more
approachable music video which would appeal to the
audience.
3. How does my music video use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
LIP SYNCING
One of the most common conventions which features in
music videos is lip syncing. This convention focuses on
getting the actor to simply mouth over a certain verse in the
song, thus seeming as if the actor is actually singing the
lyrics within the music video. My inspiration came from
Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ in where the lead singer mimes the
song throughout different stages of the video, this convention
reflected in my work as there are three stages within my
music video in where the character is seen to be singing
along to the song.
4. How does my music video use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
REVERSING OF CLIPS
Looking at other media products, such as Coldplay’s ‘The
Scientist’, which was one of my inspirations when creating
my music video, the music video focused on a journey being
created whilst the characters seems to be in reverse.
Although this convention is not too common, I felt it would
benefit my music video and therefore embedded this
convention into my work, I done this through the editing
process in which I edited the time remapping through Adobe
After Effects.
5. How does my music video use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
BLACK AND WHITE COLOR
Although I had originally wanted my music video to be filmed
in colour, I was inspired by Arcade Fire’s music video for
their single ‘Reflektor’ in which was filmed in black and white.
The bland colours which were used in that music video really
strengthened its professionalism as there were no ‘strong’
colours which could have effected the exposure of the
footage. It also created a more serious affection to its plot to
which I felt could benefit my music video as the plot could
have been somewhat overshadowed, so to create a more
serious vibe to my work, I edited the colour correction so that
the whole video was in black and white.
6. How does my music video use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
IN-FOOTAGE TRANSITIONS
Whilst watching the original music video for the song I had
chosen, Magnetic by Fenech Soler, I was intrigued with the
way they had used in-footage transitions to help smoothly
move the music video from one setting to another. I felt that I
could implement this convention within my work to help the
flow of the music video and also to promote the video
professionalism as these transitions formed the idea that
they must have been filmed with special equipment, although
that wasn’t necessary.
7. Album Digipak
The album digipak is again an incredibly important media
form within the promotional package, unlike the music video,
the digipak is a more physical copy of the artist’s work and
therefore should take on an attractive and intriguing
approach.
Throughout the years we’ve seen an incredible development
of album digipaks, from The Beatles simply white CD cover
to the more detailed and alluring CD digipaks we see today.
Because the digipak has been around for many years, this
means that there has been a build up of many different
conventions which I have had an opportunity to develop or
even challenge within my work.
8. How does my album digipak use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
COMMON CONVENTIONS (Title name,
album name, record label etc)
The most common and crucial types of conventions we see
on digipaks are the title name, album name, record label and
barcode, these are used because it gives the digipak and
identity which can be identified by its audience. The reason
why I have developed these conventions within my work is
because it gives the digipak a more common theme to it and
prevents it for being misinterpreted, it also gives the digipak
and identity due to the album title and artist name, this helps
to promote the digipak as being something associated with
the artist.
9. How does my album digipak use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
USE OF ARTIST’S FACE
As seen in all different types of CD digipaks, such as the
iconic Bohemian Rhapsody album cover by Queen, the use
of the artist’s face helps relate the digipak back more closely
to the artist without needing to hear to music. I have used
this convention in my work by adding the characters face I
had employed within my music video, this not only links the
digipak to the music video but it also gives the digipak and
identity so that the audience would know who the main
singer is of the band or who is the promotional face of the
artist.
10. How does my album digipak use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
USE OF BRIGHT, VIBRANT COLOURS
The use of bright, vibrant colours is a common convention
within album digipaks, this is because the colours makes the
digipak stand out more to the audience and also the colours
can also express the type of genre which could feature on
the album. I developed the use of bright colours by creating
my digipak to be bright blue, this way it would stand out to its
audience compared to something which is grey and dreary, it
also helps to express the upbeat tones which are featured
within the album.
11. Magazine Advertisement
The magazine advertisement is a crucial advertising tool for
the promotional package, it helps to promote artists through
the act of synergy as the advertisement will be placed in
music advertisements which in effect would benefit both
magazine and artist.
Through the construction process of my magazine
advertisement, I had researched the numerous types of
conventions which are used within a ‘common’
advertisement, these helped me construct an magazine
advertisement which promotes the artist in a way which
attracts and persuades an audience to either learn more
about the artist or even buy their album.
12. How does my magazine advertisement use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
COMMON CONVENTIONS (Artist name,
album name, tour dates etc)
Whilst researching, I realized that all magazine advertisement
share the same ‘common’ conventions such as album name
and artist name, these provided the advertisement with an
identity of to whom the advert is about and what they are trying
to promote. Alongside the more common conventions, the
addition of social network promotion, tour dates and record
label are all used to help promote the artist over all possible
fields of media forms. I have used all these conventions in my
advert to help create an identity for the artist and also to
promote their album to all possible media outlets including
twitter, facebook and soundcloud.
13. How does my magazine advertisement use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
USE OF ARTIST’S FACE
Alike the CD digpak, the use of the artist’s face is recognised
to be a common convention on magazine advertisements,
this is because it helps to promote the artist’s identity which
could catch the eye of the audience. I have developed this
convention within my work as it links my advert with the
music video and digipak as they all share this convention, it
also provides the artist with recognition and also an
identity/ego as these factors helps pusuade an audience to
listen to the artists music if they have yet to do so.
