1. 1 Think about the picture
• What is your reaction to the situation shown in this picture? Is it positive or negative? What
are the reasons for this reaction?
• Possible reasons: not crowded, modern building, combination of paintings and sculptures,
style of the art exhibited, dislike of museums and art galleries in general, etc.
2 Use your imagination
• What are these people doing here? How long have they been sitting on the stools / floor?
• Describe the interior of this building. (floors, stairs, lifts, escalators, windows, permanent
walls, etc.)
• Which other people are probably in the building at the moment?
• Describe the sculpture on the pedestal.
3 Talk about yourself
• When did you last go into a museum or art gallery? Explain your reason for doing so.
• Describe a museum or art gallery you have been to. Talk about the things you saw and your
general impression of the place.
4 Talk to your partner and find out
• what sort of things he/she has on the walls at home
• which form of art he/she most likes: paintings, sculptures, photography, etc.
• if he/she has any trouble understanding ‘modern art’
• if he/she is a creative person in any way
5 Setting some rules
• You work in a very old palace, part of which is now an art gallery and museum too. In the
last few years you’ve noticed that school children in groups have become badly behaved.
Write a list of rules and regulations that you can send to the teachers before they bring their
classes to the palace. Discuss any information that you think will help to improve the
situation.
