Waun Wen Primary School in Swansea, Wales won a bronze award from the Swansea Sustainable Schools scheme for their commitment to improving environmental standards. The school teaches pupils about environmental issues and sustainability. They have planted daffodil bulbs in their gardens, and once the daffodils bloom they will plant vegetables. Junior classes had a recycling workshop to learn about reducing, reusing, and recycling materials, and the importance of the 5 Rs for the environment.

School lands eco prize
A SWANSEA school has hit its environment target head on.
Pupils from Waun Wen Primary School have won a bronze award from the Swansea
Sustainable Schools scheme.
The honour is given to schools for their commitment to improving standards in energy and
water consumption, global citizenship, waste and recycling, school grounds, and buildings
and transport issues.
Phillip McDonnell, chairman of the scheme, said: "Schools in Swansea give priority to
teaching pupils about environmental issues.
"Swansea Sustainable Schools scheme is driving this agenda."

2. Our Gardens
We planted lots of daffodil bulbs and they
are growing well.
Once the daffodils have flowered [ready
for St. David’s Day – we hope!]
We will be able to plant our vegetables.
Each class is deciding what vegetables they
want to plant.

remind us of the

We learnt about how long various materials take to decay in landfill sites.
We were shocked to find out that plastics take 450 years and glass never
decays. Babies’ nappies take 75 years – YIKES!
We know how important it is to
implement the 5 Rs.
At school we use recycled
products whenever possible. We
reuse then recycle our paper.
We recycle plastics, batteries,
uniform, ink cartridges, card
and food. We put the water
from our water bottles in the
water butt and our fruit waste goes in the compost bin.
We encourage our parents to recycle too. All houses in Swansea now have
kerbside recycling for paper and card, tins and glass bottles, plastics and food.
