@watfordgap
The way we learn is changing. There has been a
tremendous growth in the use of digital media, social
networking and e-learning.
We are going to look at these
changes...
– How we learn on line
– Examples of social media
websites used for learning
– On line learning platforms
– What's next for digital learning?
Voluntary Sector and Learning
• 18% of organisations provide no training at all
for staff and of these 20% said that that training
was too expensive or they had no money for training.
(UK Voluntary Sector Workforce Almanac – NCVO)
• 78% of organisations surveyed stated cost was a barrier to
provision of training and 82% that time away from the office
prevented more staff from taking part in it. 66% of
organisations didn't have access to 'bite sized' training.
(Skills Platform Research – Skills 3rd Sector)
• Classroom based training isn't going away, but maybe it's
time to look at some changes and complementary ideas.
Digital Online Learning
• Internet based communication
• Being connected to training that is open 24/7
• Listening, learning, sharing conversation, not broadcast
• Building relationships / opportunities for collaboration
• Multiple media sources converge from all social networks
• Content generated in peer network community by learners,
for learners based on experience rather than theory
• Many sites are financially cost free – although time is a cost
• 360° circle of social media, prior to a course, during & after
Digital is the place where people communicate, seek, read,
share, buy, network and learn. Can't ignore it any more
Are you leading by example in your organisation?
Filtering Skills – (1st
Change)
• Learning on line – needs a new skill-set
• Discerning the 'good' from the 'googled'
16 million people lack digital skills to be effective online
(Go-On - Oct 2012)
• Originated by trusted sector sources
• Tested by grass-roots practitioners
• Collaboration to build and refine
“Double check and cross-refer to check accuracy.”
Social Media – Digital Media …. (2nd

Use of e-learning
E-learning - anytime, anyplace
Huge technology shift since 2001, has learning delivery kept up?
Try an asynchronous learning style as that's how we learn in the
world. As and when we need to. Not when a course is run.
Rapid development of learning & efficient deployment to wide
audience. Changes can be in place immediately.
Reduces cost per learner. Saving on time (travel), cost (trainer)
and productivity (not out of office). See the ROI calculator
Unlimited capacity and consistency of delivery
Flexibility of time & place and reaching remote workers
How could we use e-learning? (5th
Change)
• Interactive learning with resources, video, quizzes & more
• Self development, e.g. health & safety or team skills
• With supervision an internal resource for each staff
member or volunteer as part of their personal L&D plan
• Meet skills gaps identified by Group Devt. Workers, all
groups receive the same centrally delivered course
• As a blend, supplementing face to face training or fill
gaps in courses an organisation isn't able to offer
• Collaborate to design & build own e-learning courses
Online learning from
• For public, voluntary & social housing sectors
• For employees, councilors, governors & volunteers
• Content, authoring tools and LMS platform
• Over 500 shared e-learning modules
• Affordable systems with no set-up fees
• Learning on demand - ready when you are
• A collaborative community of over 13,000
NYYF – Talented Governance eLearning
• http://vcslearning.learningpool.com just need 30 minutes
• Reference to go alongside open course – blended learning
• A quick refresher when back at work
• Quiz and links to on line resources
• Other courses to be added – Health & Safety, Managing a
team ...
Present Digital Learning
• Let people learn. Whenever & however, but capture it
have informal chats to formalise or see it in action
• Don't ignore hand-held devices – smartphones & tablets,
used to reinforce learning (Encore), not a gimmick.
Learning becomes a shared social experience.
• Social media is natural for many learners. Encourage
Twitter research, Record Podcasts, Facebook chats.
Everything so far is already with us! Only the 6th
Change is looking to the future of Digital Learning.
Future Digital Learning (The 6th
Change)
Own your learning, it's a personal portfolio of transferable
Open Badges recognising our formal and informal skills
Staff have Talent and are not just learners. Use a system
(e.g. Totara) to capture informal learning and build
Knowledgebank ... from staff, your most precious asset
Spaced Practice. (Learning Pool Encore) reinforces
knowledge retention. Learning continues via an App,
SMS, Podcast/Video at intervals when back at work
A MOOC – open up courses for free and share to much
wider audience. Link the on line element to formal
accreditation or blend with tutor time.
Future Digital Learning
• Augmented Reality software and hardware devices such
as Google Glass within 5 2 years will enable us to gather
information and learn by looking at objects or situations.
• The Internet of Things are objects learning from their
surroundings. AI - A refrigerator that automatically
orders food, Driverless Cars 'learning' from sensors.
• These may seem like the stuff of science fiction stories
& not something that will fit into the way we work,
but the way we learn is fundamentally changing.
• Make learning something that is Social & Fun!
Maybe we'll see a shift in L&D teams from being
providers to be Digital Learning Encouragers
Over to You
Which approaches to learning could be part
of your plans over the next 12 months?
1. Filtering to find relevant knowledge
2. Bite sized following tags and trends
3. Self directed in a mix of media
4. Your Personal Learning Network
5. Blended use of e-learning
The Future
6. Learning will take place everywhere.

Editor's Notes

  1. Web 2.0 is a collection of tools, applications and changes in working practice that have enabled people in communities to become more connected, to network with their peers and to collectively campaign as force not possible before. It has enabled supporting organisations develop a new way of working with their members; getting the message to them faster by using new techniques (all the senses not just printed word) and has allowed members to directly comment on and influence the organisations direction. Social Media is a way of using tools and platforms running on the Internet to instantly collaborate, share information and experiences, or have a conversation ideas or causes we care about. It’s a world where anyone can be a publisher, a reporter, an artist, a filmmaker, a photographer or pundit …. even an activist or citizen philanthropist!
  2. Any questions?
  3. Communications Volunteering BH
  4. Facebook – become a fan of .... .... This is an example of an LIO using Facebook to bring together pictures and events and potentially to gain extra supporters who would not have found them otherwise. .... Also heard of a Kids organisation in Herefordshire who needed supporting statements and testimonies for a funding application. They set up a Facebook Group and in just 3 days got 49 statements for the bid from their friends and users of the organisation who were already on Facebook. Important point, as with all social media – don’t establish a presence on Facebook and then tell existing followers (or people you hope to interest) that they must get a Facebook account. This won’t work! Use Facebook (etc.) to connect with people who are already 100% conversant with the platform but who you’d like to target as followers. Also mention Bebo (aimed at a younger age group) and MySpace (very good for musicians)‏ LinkedIn (more professional business use)‏
