Course Description <ul><ul><li>In this course students will: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Discover and use word processing software, spreadsheet software, presentation software and learn e-mail basics. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Delve into the world of technology, exploring past inventions and how modern technologies work, as well as their effects on our world. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Explore the Internet and learn safe guidelines for Internet use, learn to use search engines efficiently, and evaluate the validity of Internet sources. </li></ul></ul>

About your teacher <ul><li>My name is Ms. Griffin </li></ul><ul><li>I grew up in Philadelphia, PA. </li></ul><ul><li>Currently I live in Delaware County, PA </li></ul><ul><li>I received my Master’s Degree from Drexel University. </li></ul><ul><li>I have taught Technology for the past 3 years </li></ul><ul><li>This is my first year teaching at PALCS. </li></ul><ul><li>I teach Exploring Technology 7 and 8. </li></ul>

Expectations <ul><li>Every student is capable of receiving an A in Technology! </li></ul><ul><li>It is expected that every student will complete his/her assignments on time. </li></ul><ul><li>It is expected that every student will try his/her best to receive full credit for each assignment. </li></ul>

Communications <ul><li>Office Hours </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I am usually in the office from 7:30 – 3:30. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I have office hours specifically for Exploring Technology 7 & 8. This is a time when the chat room is open for students and/or parents to ask questions. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Chats </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Try to attend all scheduled chats. If you aren’t able to attend, they will be recorded. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We will go over the topics that we are currently studying. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Course Announcements </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Look at them everyday. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>They will include chat times, school announcements, fun games/trivia, etc… </li></ul></ul><ul><li>SchoolMail </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I will respond to SchoolMails within 24 hours, unless I am out of the office. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Telephone </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I can also be reached by phone 610-701-3333 ext. 1307. </li></ul></ul>

Chats <ul><li>Chat will be held weekly and schedules are posted in each course. </li></ul><ul><li>During the chat we will discuss a topic that we are covering. </li></ul><ul><li>Please be on time and chats will last for 45 minutes. </li></ul><ul><li>You will have to go to the http://connect.palcs.org link that is posted in your course. </li></ul><ul><li>When a chat is in session, there will be a link to it in the announcements section. </li></ul><ul><li>When logging in to the chat use your first and last name. </li></ul><ul><li>Chats are not mandatory but a record of attendance will be kept for possible extra credit. </li></ul>Example
  8. 8. This is important <ul><li>We have to keep the lines of communication OPEN. </li></ul><ul><li>Please let me know right away whenever you have a question or concern. </li></ul><ul><li>You can contact me by SchoolMail, Phone, or whenever my “office is open”. </li></ul>

Due Dates <ul><li>Suggested Completion Date </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I will post the date that I would like the assignment to be submitted. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>This will help you stay on pace with the course. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Assignments should be completed right away. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Chats will be planned according to the suggested completion dates. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Due Date </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This is the last possible day that the assignment can be turned in before late penalties occur. </li></ul></ul>

Late penalties <ul><li>You have three weeks to complete an assignment. </li></ul><ul><li>After 3 weeks have passed the assignment will be considered late and penalties will occur. </li></ul><ul><li>Here are the late penalties: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Day 1 = 5 points off the original grade </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Day 2 = 10 points off </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Day 3 = 20 points off </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Day 4 = 30 points off </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Day 5 = 40 points off </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Day 6 = 50 points off </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>After 7 days the assignment is a zero. This will greatly affect your average. </li></ul></ul>

Submitting Work <ul><li>Submit your assignments by the suggested Due Date this way you will not get behind in your work. </li></ul><ul><li>You have to click on the submit button: </li></ul><ul><li>otherwise you will not receive credit for completing the assignment. </li></ul><ul><li>There are different types of lessons and each type requires you to do something different. </li></ul>

Types of lessons <ul><ul><li>Reading – Assignment does not need to be turned in, but lesson needs to be completed </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Free Response – Something will need to be typed or inserted into the box. You can also upload files to be graded. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Report Submission– An assignment/document will need to be uploaded </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Discussion Question – Students will answer a question and post their response. You can visit the lesson later and see what other’s wrote. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Fill in the Blank – Students will only have to fill in a word or phrase into the box. These are automatically graded. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Multiple Choice and True/False: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>– Questions are answered in the portal and it is automatically graded </li></ul></ul></ul>

Troubleshooting tips <ul><li>Things to keep in mind: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Turn your pop-up blocker off </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Use Mozilla Firefox as your internet browser (should be on your school computer) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Make sure your computer has Adobe Acrobat, Java, Shockwave, and Flash (should be on the school computer already) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dial-up users – If things take too long to load, (some online sites we use will) make sure to let me know and we can work out another solution </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If you experience any computer/printer/scanner problems, please let me know RIGHT AWAY! </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>For Tech.
