1. Introduction
• Young people do not feel involved in
the society and their voices do not
reach decision-makers
• WYRED project aims to change this,
amplifying youth voices, and
connecting them to decision-makers
• It aims to help young people research
the digital issues that matter to them,
so that their concerns are backed up
with evidence so that they can have
an influence

2. International conversations: Gender and self-image
• International Women's Day is celebrated on 8 March
• Celebrated since 1911
• A day in which the social, economic, cultural and political
achievements of women are celebrated, while at the same
time making visible the need for action to accelerate
gender balance in any field, something that is still far from
being a reality
GRIAL Research Group - WYRED Project
2. International conversations: Gender and self-image
Objective
• Share views and ideas on gender stereotypes on the
Internet with young people across Europe
Where
• The activity takes place within the WYRED Platform

2. International conversations: Gender and self-image
1. Locate examples of stereotypes on the Internet, both positive and
negative, and share them in the forum "Exploration: gender

the community.

technology influence?"
• There should be a debate about how technology influences
gender equality, the perception of stereotypes; whether the
use of technology and the Internet is different depending on
gender; whether there are differences between the
stereotypes found on the Internet and those that we can
perceive in our daily lives beyond social networks

• Negative influence of TIC
“I think that technology
greatly influences the
expansion of
stereotypes, especially in
adolescents” (Ancaloti)
“Since stereotypes have
always existed, but with the
Internet this situation is
increasing, making many more
stereotypes appear” (aliciabf)
“Stereotypes have
increased in recent
years due to the
great impact of
social networks and
the Internet” (anayr)
“With the explosion of
social networks we are
more exposed to
people and to being
criticized” (Noelia_09)
6. Conversation about stereotypes
GRIAL Research Group - WYRED Project
6. Conversation about stereotypes
GRIAL Research Group - WYRED Project
• Rejection of inequality and the permanence of stereotypes
“There are no jobs
for men or jobs for
women; There are
jobs for people”
(lrsnchzmrcs.)
“We need to put an
end to these
stereotypes”
(aliciabf)
“We want more
women doing jobs
as firefighter, and
more men
performing trades as
a nurse” (Ancaloti)
“Toys are toys for all
children”
(Arandanito_lindo)
“We must end with
this, by means of
coeducation,
promoting an equal
education of children
and girls” (Emilia)
6. Conversation about stereotypes
GRIAL Research Group - WYRED Project
7. Conclusions
• The stereotypes that are pointed out coincide with those that
appear in the theory
• Equal importance is given to male and female stereotypes,
following the line of the most recent studies
• Gender stereotypes are dangerous for the achievement of an
egalitarian society
• Equal values are defended against discrimination
• Need for social change through education
GRIAL Research Group - WYRED Project
7. Conclusions
Limitations
• Sample biased in terms of sex, nationality and age
• Few studies on stereotypes, especially masculine, that
allow to contrast
• Little development of some discussion topics
