Register on Schools Online http://schoolsonline.britishcouncil.org/ for a wealth of project ideas and opportunities for international learning and intercultural practice.
Taking these ideas further Check with your course facilitator for future courses that complement this course. An online version of this course, ‘Education for Global Citizenship’, is available at http://connectingclassrooms-learning.britishcouncil.org/. The online courses include case studies, professional development activities, classroom activities, internet links and further reading. See more information below. Two online courses complement this one: Intercultural Practice – Taking it Further Sustainable Partnerships.
Explain that this is a very practical course. You will plan a classroom activity or topic around a global citizenship
theme and try out some popular techniques. We will explore some of the ways that global citizenship can enhance teaching and learning in your
school and consider how international practice can contribute to this.
Explain that ‘global citizenship’ is a phrase that is widely used in some countries, and means different things to different people.
Ask participants to write down up to five words or phrases that come to mind when they think of ‘global citizenship’.
They should then introduce themselves to other people in the room and share their lists.
After five minutes, ask participants to form groups and discuss:
Who has similar ideas to you?
Are there ideas you hadn’t thought of?
Where do our ideas come from?
Use Sheet C2 to introduce the global citizenship outlooks.
You may wish to use additional activity 1 to explore the meaning of global citizenship further.
Explain global citizenship as a terminology used in different contexts
Connection that are

Commitment to rights and responsibility, Commitment to Sustainability, Desire to make a difference, Sense of interdependence, Positive sense of identity, Commitment to peace, Commitment to justice and Open to new ideas
Explain that we have seen global citizenship through our words. Now we need to explore global citizenship through our learners.
Explain that we are now going to explore what global citizenship means for our learners.
Give each group a set of the Global Outlooks cards.
Ask groups to share their initial responses to the cards.
What might the following words mean to learners?
:‘commitment’, ‘sense of’, ‘desire to’
Ask groups to discuss which of the outlooks they would prioritize as being the most important for their learners.
Get quick feedback on group discussions.
Refer to Sheet C2, asking participants to spend a moment or two thinking about how the framework relates to their
discussions.
Invite feedback about this.

Colleagues in your school and the Connecting Classrooms schools you work with in other countries may have different ideas from you about global citizenship.

Allow 20 minutes
Take five large sheets paper and, at the top of each, write a theme heading. Place these on tables
around the room or on the wall.
Divide participants into five groups and give each group one of the sheets.
Ask them to write down what they think the theme means.
After two minutes, ask the groups to move on to the next sheet, until everyone has contributed their ideas
to every sheet.
Discuss alternative viewpoints or any questions that are raised.
Rearrange groups so that staff from similar schools are working together, e.g. geography teachers working together.
Allow 40 minutes
Refer to Sheet C10, which shows themes for global citizenship
.
Check that everyone is familiar with the themes’ cards. Be prepared to give groups time, if necessary, to discuss the
themes cards.
Ask each group to select a theme to develop as a project or activity for their school that can be used with an international
partner. Refer each group to the Sheet for the theme that they have selected (C11–C15).
These sheets give starting points for activities and projects.
Also refer them to Sheet C10, which shows the five themes.
Ask the groups to plan their activity or project. Emphasize that it is fine to carry out simple activities that are well thought
through. Encourage participants to use different ideas to the ones on the sheets – if they
wish.
Ask the groups to think of a way to present their project to the others.
