The OpenEdInfluencers project at MandelaUni presents about Open Textbooks. Learn about empowerment of students, advocacy for change in education using OER, and collaboration in doing so.
The ELT environment has seen enormous changes over the past decades. Now as we enter the 21st century we find ourselves in a new era where digital technologies will be key to enhancing the learning experience. In this talk we will look at these new tools and how our concepts of education are evolving around them. We will also discuss what impact this has on the relationship between teachers and students.
Traditionally, learning has been a part of teaching in the classroom, but internet has changed all that. Our pupils learn 24 hours a day. This is a reality teachers are facing when they meet students today. Many teachers use flipped classrooms to enhance pupil’s learning. It is a challenge for some of us. How can we provide excellent quality in our flipped education? It is a technical issue as well as a methodological challenge. This interactive workshop will explore this topic. I will give examples from Swedish schools and provide the audience with tools for teaching in a modern classroom.
This portfolio has everithing that I have learnt during all this year. For me it is education because I can learn more about the use of technology in education.

Abstract
Initiatives supporting the use and creation of open educational resources (OER) can provide cost, access, and student success solutions for higher education. The affordability argument often associated with OER gets significant attention because commercial textbook prices are startling and cost savings accumulate quickly when transitioning to free resources. However, the pedagogical innovation enabled by openness is as highly valued by both educators and their students. In this presentation, we’ll define OER, examine the impact of OER use in higher education, explore values that are fundamental to open education, discuss concepts of information ownership and authority, and highlight examples of open education that have empowered educators, improved information access, and increased student agency.

From the SLA 2009 Weekend Course. Moving from the familiarity of the school library to using complex HE library resources and services can be a challenge especially when basic study and information literacy skills also need honing. Come along to consider and reflect on the issues.
This is the presentation on how i engage learners to learn beyond the classroom using various resources . In this case i used school garden and technology resources like skype. The main thing is to unlock and unearth hidden talents from learners so that they can get inspired towards pathing their future careers. Learners learn more when they do. But beside that to make them global citizens. And Teaching and learning that is incorporated in UNSDG's bears fruit because learners become the solution seekers of their own community challenges at an early age hence future leaders. So teaching learners using practical projects and connecting them with opportunities through education is the way to go.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

8. On Open Education Resources;
I had no idea what this meant and after watching the videos and reading the
notes I know what it is; But [I] am very surprised that the education system in
South Africa is not exploiting this cost effective and efficient way of delivering
high quality education. Yes there are issues of intellectual property but I
believe the ideal of Ubuntu can possibly solve this issue.
I've only done 2 modules so far ,… I'm enjoying the process.
What students have said about OER while doing
the BOEI course - 2021
9. We asked students about experiences
with traditional textbooks,
before we asked them about
Open Textbooks.
10. NMU Students share experiences about the cost of textbooks.
Too high. Knowledge should
be free and attainable for
all
Students should
not buy
textbooks
I bought a second hand textbook from a student and it wasn't the
correct edition even though it was the edition the lecturer
initially said to get
Even though I can afford them I think the
prices can be more reasonable
They cost too much and I don’t use as much of the book as expected.
Textbooks are expensive and you sometimes don’t get to resell them
after. Losing money.
Very costly
The biggest issues are 1.) when an expensive textbook is prescribed
and barely used, and 2.) When books that are carried over
into the next year come out with new editons, with minimal
changes to the prior edition, but are still required to be
bought again because the questions prescribed for
assignments come from the new version.
A lot of money.
Funding isn't reliable for
textbooks. Sometimes
we re not awarded
enough money to cover
the cost of all the
NSFAS doesn't provide enough funding for textbooks. I have to
prioritize textbooks over food sometimes
Too expensive. A big chunk of money out of my pocket.
Textbooks are a waste of
money. We pay enough to
be here already.
I couldn't afford to buy all my textbooks in first year and the bursary
I'm on doesn't assist with textbooks. So I felt lost in many of
my classes and thought I would fail. Luckily I made friends in
class who helped me out by making copies
It's always been compulsory for me to buy textbooks for my French
modules and finding French students from previous years
isn't easy so many times I'm paying R200-R400 for each book
I need for class.
I can afford them but they could be cheaper.
Would be better if all textbooks were free. Many students can't afford
textbooks and rely on bursary money to pay for it. Everyone
can benefit from free education materials
I find it better to find and download material online even if it's illegal.
It is better than spending all that money on a book that will
only be used for a few weeks
The amount of
money spent on
textbooks in first
and second year
was ridiculous.
For English Literature we only use novels, sometimes they are easily
found online but other times we have to purchase them and
it sucks paying for a novel that does not interest you.
One time I bought a new textbook for R1200
and it was falling apart by the time I
used it in class. Couldn't get a refund.
The cost of textbooks for students who do not have financial aid or
bursaries is a big contribution to low grades and illegal
downloading/ sharing of pdf versions of the textbooks. It is
unnecessary for textbooks to be expensive if the student will
only use it for one term (most often not needed for an entire
semester). In that case some textbooks should be created to
cover the entire 1 year course and not only 1 module.
The costs of textbooks are really
high and many times the
whole book is not even used.
Textbooks are expensive but luckily I don't need any for the modules I
am doing right now.
Expensive
Having to buy textbooks
for only 1 semester
is very expensive. It
influences financial
budget and
sometimes textbooks
get stolen and I lose
money.
The cost of textbooks makes course to be challenging because I
couldn't get some required books from library
