SPEED BREAKERS

 In the present scenario energy crisis is the biggest problem faced by mankind.
 India is a country, which suffers a lot due to the lack of sufficient power generation.
 In India, Conventional fossil fuels are the main sources for power generation, but there is a fear that
they will get exhausted eventually by the next few decades.
 Therefore, This new system is invented to produce electricity without using any commercial fossil
fuels. This latest technology uses the potential energy of automobiles for production of power.
INTRODUCTION
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF CONVENTIONAL
METHODS OF ENERGY PRODUCTION.
 The increase in usage of fossil fuels increases causes
depletion of resources.
 Increase in ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION.
 Emission of harmful and carcinogenic substances into the
atmosphere
 Methods of mining of fossil fuels can be highly
destructive.
 Not sustainable etc.
WHY DO WE NEED THIS PROJECT..???
 This project puts a relief to the growing consumer demands.
 This project enables low budget power production.
 Energy can be produced throughout the year.
 Simple Construction.
 No Manual labour required during generation.
 Maintenance is easy.
 Pollution free power generation.
 Does not consume any non-renewable resources.
CONSRUCTIONAL DETAILS
The most important parts used are
 Rack and Pinion.
 Spur Gear.
 Springs
 Ball Bearings.
 Electrical Generator (or) Dynamo.
RACK AND PINION
 A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that
comprises a pair of gears which convert rotational motion
into linear motion or vice versa.
 In this setup, The rack is welded to the base of a dome
shaped plate which represents the speed Breaker.
 The pinion is mounted on a platform. The ball bearing
provides easy and efficient motion of the pinion wheel.
SPUR GEAR
 Spur gears or straight-cut gears are the simplest type
of gear.
 Here, spur gear is responsible for converting the small
movement of pinion into larger motion (by choosing
effective gear ratio)
 The spur gear is placed on a parallel shaft which is
connected to the dynamo.
 Correct meshing of gears is necessary for effective
power production.
SPRINGS
 A spring plays the most important role in this
experimental arrangement.
 It is the compression of springs that enables the motion
of the rack and pinion.
 The springs are placed in between the two steel
platforms.
BEARINGS
 A bearing is a machine element, which
supports another machine element. It permits
a relative motion between the contact
surfaces, while carrying the load.
 Bearings are placed between each gears and
shaft in order to reduce friction and provide
easy motion
ELECTRICAL GENERATOR (OR) DYNAMO
 The dynamo uses rotating coils of wire and magnetic fields
to convert mechanical rotation into a pulsing direct electric
current through Faraday's law.
 The dynamo is directly connected to the spur gear with the
help of a small shaft.
 The Dynamo is responsible for converting the mechanical
energy produced in gear drives into electrical energy.
 This electrical energy can be given to a battery and stored
for future use
CONSTRUCTION
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 It utilizes both mechanical and electrical techniques for the power generation and its
storage.
 It consists of a dome shape which represents the speed breaker
 Whenever the vehicle passes over the dome, the speed breaker moves downwards
due to the action of the mass of the vehicle on the springs.
 Since the rack is welded on to the base of the dome, the compression of the spring
causes linear motion of the rack and pinion and arrangement.
 Small motion in the larger pinion can cause high rotation in the smaller pinion.
 Since the dynamo and gear are connected, the rotation of gear becomes the source of
mechanical energy for the dynamo.
 The dynamo converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy.
 This output energy can be amplified and stored using electrical devices.
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
It has been found that the energy produced by the speed breaker depends on two main
factors
1. Mass of the vehicle
2. Speed of the vehicle
VARIATION OF CURRENT PRODUCED DUE TO CHANGE
IN MASS
VARIATION OF VOLTAGE PRODUCED DUE TO CHANGE
IN SPEED
DISADVANTAGES
 We have to check mechanism from time to time.
 It can get rusted in rainy season.
 It will not work with light weight vehicle
 Spring tension might reduce over time and hence it needs replacement after a
while.
APPLICATIONS
This power can be used in the following:
 Street Lights.
 Road Signals.
 Sign boards on the roads.
 Lighting Of the bus stops.
 Lighting of the check post on the highways etc.
CONCLUSION
 Now, vehicular traffic in big cities is more, causing a problem to human being. But this
vehicular traffic can also be utilized for power generation by this unique technique.
 As it does not utilize any external source, and traffic will never be reduced, these power humps
are more reliable, and have more life than any other power source.
 If it is placed in heavy traffic roads, the weight and kinetic energy of the vehicles can be used
to produce mechanical power in shafts and this mechanical power is once again converted into
electrical energy.

Extraction of electricity from speed breakers

  • 2.  In the present scenario energy crisis is the biggest problem faced by mankind.  India is a country, which suffers a lot due to the lack of sufficient power generation.  In India, Conventional fossil fuels are the main sources for power generation, but there is a fear that they will get exhausted eventually by the next few decades.  Therefore, This new system is invented to produce electricity without using any commercial fossil fuels. This latest technology uses the potential energy of automobiles for production of power. INTRODUCTION
  • 3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF CONVENTIONAL METHODS OF ENERGY PRODUCTION.  The increase in usage of fossil fuels increases causes depletion of resources.  Increase in ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION.  Emission of harmful and carcinogenic substances into the atmosphere  Methods of mining of fossil fuels can be highly destructive.  Not sustainable etc.
  • 4. WHY DO WE NEED THIS PROJECT..???  This project puts a relief to the growing consumer demands.  This project enables low budget power production.  Energy can be produced throughout the year.  Simple Construction.  No Manual labour required during generation.  Maintenance is easy.  Pollution free power generation.  Does not consume any non-renewable resources.
  • 5. CONSRUCTIONAL DETAILS The most important parts used are  Rack and Pinion.  Spur Gear.  Springs  Ball Bearings.  Electrical Generator (or) Dynamo.
  • 6. RACK AND PINION  A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a pair of gears which convert rotational motion into linear motion or vice versa.  In this setup, The rack is welded to the base of a dome shaped plate which represents the speed Breaker.  The pinion is mounted on a platform. The ball bearing provides easy and efficient motion of the pinion wheel.
  • 7. SPUR GEAR  Spur gears or straight-cut gears are the simplest type of gear.  Here, spur gear is responsible for converting the small movement of pinion into larger motion (by choosing effective gear ratio)  The spur gear is placed on a parallel shaft which is connected to the dynamo.  Correct meshing of gears is necessary for effective power production.
  • 8. SPRINGS  A spring plays the most important role in this experimental arrangement.  It is the compression of springs that enables the motion of the rack and pinion.  The springs are placed in between the two steel platforms.
  • 9. BEARINGS  A bearing is a machine element, which supports another machine element. It permits a relative motion between the contact surfaces, while carrying the load.  Bearings are placed between each gears and shaft in order to reduce friction and provide easy motion
  • 10. ELECTRICAL GENERATOR (OR) DYNAMO  The dynamo uses rotating coils of wire and magnetic fields to convert mechanical rotation into a pulsing direct electric current through Faraday's law.  The dynamo is directly connected to the spur gear with the help of a small shaft.  The Dynamo is responsible for converting the mechanical energy produced in gear drives into electrical energy.  This electrical energy can be given to a battery and stored for future use
  • 12. WORKING PRINCIPLE  It utilizes both mechanical and electrical techniques for the power generation and its storage.  It consists of a dome shape which represents the speed breaker  Whenever the vehicle passes over the dome, the speed breaker moves downwards due to the action of the mass of the vehicle on the springs.  Since the rack is welded on to the base of the dome, the compression of the spring causes linear motion of the rack and pinion and arrangement.  Small motion in the larger pinion can cause high rotation in the smaller pinion.
  • 13.  Since the dynamo and gear are connected, the rotation of gear becomes the source of mechanical energy for the dynamo.  The dynamo converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy.  This output energy can be amplified and stored using electrical devices.
  • 14. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS It has been found that the energy produced by the speed breaker depends on two main factors 1. Mass of the vehicle 2. Speed of the vehicle
  • 15. VARIATION OF CURRENT PRODUCED DUE TO CHANGE IN MASS
  • 16. VARIATION OF VOLTAGE PRODUCED DUE TO CHANGE IN SPEED
  • 17. DISADVANTAGES  We have to check mechanism from time to time.  It can get rusted in rainy season.  It will not work with light weight vehicle  Spring tension might reduce over time and hence it needs replacement after a while.
  • 18. APPLICATIONS This power can be used in the following:  Street Lights.  Road Signals.  Sign boards on the roads.  Lighting Of the bus stops.  Lighting of the check post on the highways etc.
  • 19. CONCLUSION  Now, vehicular traffic in big cities is more, causing a problem to human being. But this vehicular traffic can also be utilized for power generation by this unique technique.  As it does not utilize any external source, and traffic will never be reduced, these power humps are more reliable, and have more life than any other power source.  If it is placed in heavy traffic roads, the weight and kinetic energy of the vehicles can be used to produce mechanical power in shafts and this mechanical power is once again converted into electrical energy.
