OBJECTIVE:
In this project we will be fabricating technology to generate electricity from speed breakers in
which the system used is reliable and this technique will help conserve our natural resources.
The design of power generating speed breaker has concept of setting up a roller mechanism in
the speed breakers which will be rotated by the moving vehicles due to friction .Its shaft will be
connected to the electric dynamo and it will produce electrical energy proportional to traffic
density. This generated power can be regulated for continuous supply. The generated power can
be used for general purpose like streetlights, traffic signals. The electrical output can be
improved by arranging these power humps in series this generated power can be amplified and
stored by using different electric devices.

SCOPE OF WORK:
ENERGY CONSERVATION & ECONOMY
Electricity plays a very important role in our life”. Due to population explosion, the current
power generation has become insufficient to fulfill our requirements. As a large amount of
energy is wasted at the speed breakers through the dissipation of heat and also through friction,
every time a vehicle passers over it. There is great possibility of tapping this energy and
generating by making the speed-breaker as a power generation unit.
In coming days, this will prove a great boon to the world, since it will save a lot of electricity of
power plants that gets wasted in illuminating the street lights due to long transmissions. As the
conventional sources are depleting very fast, it’s high time to think of alternative resources. We
got to save the power gained from the conventional sources for efficient use. So this project not
only provides alternative but also adds to the economy of the country. This way we can generate
green, pollution-free alternative source of electricity, by the moving vehicles on the road.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
This project explains the mechanism of electricity generation from speed breakers. The friction
force due to vehicle movement acted upon the speed breaker system will make the breaker
move in opposite direction and the model will be having an Electro-kinetic energy conversion
system which will be transforming this kinetic energy into electricity.
The speed breaker arrangement will be having a protruded rollerat its top which will be having
contact with the high frictional surface tires of the vehicle. The roller will be having its support
3. on freely moving ball bearings and on the outer side of it will be a small gear welded which will
transfer the rolling motion of roller to the generating unit which will be arranged inside the
ground.
The power generating unit will be consisting of the fly wheel, dynamo, regulating circuit,
battery, wires, diodes and other construction elements.
The chain coming from roller will transmit the mechanical power of rotation from to roller to the
flywheel. The flywheel will be further mechanically coupled to a generator of desired
specifications as per the values of torque generated by the vehicle’s motion.
This speed of flywheel is sufficient to rotate the rotor of a generator and is fed into the rotor of a
generator. The rotor which rotates within a static magnetic stator cuts the magnetic flux
surrounding it, thus producing the electric motive force (emf).This regulated emf is now sent to
the storage battery where it is stored during the day time and can be used in night time for
providing power to street lights.
COMPONENTS TO BE USED
FLY WHEEL:
The primary function of flywheel is to act as an energy accumulator. It reduces the
fluctuations in speed. It absorbs the energy when demand is less and release the same
when it is required.
ROLLER SHAFT:
It is a rotating element, which is used to transmit power from one place to another
place. It supports the rotating elements like gears and flywheels. It must have high
torsional rigidity and lateral rigidity.
SPRINGS:
It is defined as an elastic body whose function is to distort when loaded and to
recover its original shape when the load is removed. It cushions, absorbs or controls
energy either due to shocks or due to vibrations.
BEARINGS:
A bearing is a device to allow constrained relative motion between two or more parts, typically
rotation or linear movement. It permits relative
motion between the contacting surfaces while carrying the loads. They reduce the friction
and transmit the motion effectively.
Bearings may be classified broadly according to the motions they allow and according to their
principle of operation as well as by the directions of applied loads they can handle. The type of
bearing used here is rolling element type bearing which is widely used, relatively high friction,
suffers from station in some applications. Depending upon the application, lifetime can be higher
or lower than rolling element bearings.
4. ELECTRIC DYNAMO:
It is a device, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Its work is based on
“faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction”. After the calculation of torque produced and the
revolutions per minute , the voltage & current specifications will be decided and accordingly the
desired dynamo will be installed into the system.
BATTERY:
A battery is a device that converts chemical energy contained within its active materials directly
into electric energy by means of redox reaction. This type of reaction involves the transfer of
electrons from one material to another via an electric circuit.For the purpose of lightning a street
light for 12 hours we will use dry lithium-ion battery which will be charged from the power
output of generator and will store the charge continuously. This stored current will be used in the
night time for street lightening purpose.
