Your body’s stress reaction was meant to protect you; however whenstress becomes consistent, rather than periodic, it can be very harmful to the body and eventually caneven kill you.By learning your body’s response to stress and recognizing the symptoms, you can better deal with yourstressors and bring balance back to your life. Take this simple test to determine if stress is controlling you:1. When I feel upset, I don’t know how to calm myself down or how to regain balance for theremainder of my day.2. I am often moody, irritable or even angry.3. I often feel anxious about the events of the day and the future.4. I seldom turn to friends and family as my support group to help me regain my balance.Article from Michael Ellison continued on page 29...If you would like to be a part of something that contributes tothe wellness of those you care about – and you could use extraincome for the important things in your life – we would lovethe opportunity to meet you in a tour city near you.trivita.com2 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness

  • 4. trivita.com4 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessScott Conard, M.D., is the founder of TienaHealth,an organization of medical doctors in primarycare practice who emphasize healthy lifestylesto maintain wellness. Dr. Conard is considereda national expert on disease prevention.TienaHealth also conducts clinical trials.Scott Conard, M.D.Founder, TienaHealthThroughout North America, this taxseason can bring anxiety, tension, worry, stress – to many. This yearespecially, with the pressures of the economyadding more financial woe, you might befeeling the very real and dramatic effectsof financial loss. I think it’s significant thatmental health professionals rate losing ajob as a “devastating” life event, just likethe death of a spouse.During Stress Awareness Month in April,it’s timely to look at the impact stress hason us, both mentally and physically (see storyon page 8). As you probably know, a certainamount of stress is just a normal part of life. But when we have chronic stress, and feelpressured or overwhelmed much of the time, our bodies and minds pay a steep price. Here’sjust one example: stress depletes our bodiesof B vitamins.Linking symptoms of stressand B-12 deficiencyIn my practice, I often see patients sufferingfrom lack of energy, low moods, fatigue, irritability and a host of other issues. Theseare among the symptoms that also occur withchronic stress. And it’s amazing how manytimes people get dramatic relief from theseproblems when they increase their levels ofB-12 by taking a quality supplement. To clearly see the connection between symptomsof stress and B-12, consider this information fromMental Health America (MHA; formerly theNational Mental Health Association). In listingthe various problems caused by stress, the veryfirst few items include several known to be linkedwith B-12 deficiency:• Headaches, feelings of despair, lack of energy, sadness, nervousness, anger, irritability• Trouble concentrating, memory problems, trouble sleeping• Mental health problems, such as panicattacks, anxiety disorders, depressionThanks to rigorous studies by my colleaguesin medical research, we know that people whohave a B-12 deficiency suffer many of thesesame symptoms, caused by decreased mentaland nerve functioning. These symptoms caninclude mental confusion and forgetfulness, mood swings and even psychotic behavior likeseeing and/or hearing things. Because of theseassociations, one of the first things I do whenpeople complain of these problems is makesure they are getting enough of the essentialvitamins like B-12.Older and younger people at riskContrary to the view of some, it isn’t onlyolder adults who are at risk of B-12 deficiencies. While it is true that the body’s ability toabsorb B vitamins from food decreases withage, younger people can be deficient, too.B-12 updateby Dr. Scott ConardSupplementation may help ease symptomsWhen mental stress makes you feel bad,can there “B” relief?... regardless of age, those whodidn’t take a B-12 supplementwere twice as likely to be B-12deficient as those who did.

Even more interesting:regardless of age, those who didn’t take aB-12 supplement were twice as likely tobe B-12 deficient as those who did.So while research continues into the effectsof chronic stress, I’m confident that this isyet another area in which B-12 will be foundto play a key role. If you or someone in your lifeis struggling with chronic stress, mood issues, low energy and related symptoms, I urge you toconsider making healthy changes. It’s importantto exercise, eat right and do all you can tocounter the daily stress that each and every oneof us experiences. For maximum results fromsupplementation, I recommend TriVita’s B-12products, which offer maximum absorption. As individuals we may not be able to“cure” the economy, but we can definitelybe pro-active about pursuing wellnessvigorously, every day.SUCCESS STORIES“I knew it was the Super B-12 that madethe difference.”“I was diagnosed with multiplesclerosis about 17 years ago.Over the past couple years myneurologist has had me take acognitive test which measuresmy ability to focus and haveclarity of mind.I did well on the first few tests. I only lost myfocus a couple times and got about 3-4 questionswrong. A few months ago, I found out aboutTriVita’s new Sublingual Super B-12 and begantaking it to see how it would work for me. I washopeful I would see positive results. Well, I wentto my neurologist yesterday and, like usual, hehad me take the cognitive test again. This time Idid great... I had a PERFECT score and never lostmy focus. The woman who administered the test wasamazed and very impressed; she said they don’tnormally see a perfect score, especially someonewith the level of my condition. Also, before Istarted on Super B, I went on a minor detox dietand cut out caffeine. I found myself extremelytired all the time and wanting my caffeine. After afew weeks, I started drinking caffeine again. I alsostarted taking Super B-12. Recently I decided todo another minor detox diet and went off caffeineagain. Never once did I lack any energy from nothaving caffeine; I knew it was the Super B-12 thatmade the difference. You couldbe stressed out from a big event, suchas a family wedding, or even a smallirritation, such as being over-hungry.Over time, stress can lead to a numberof serious health problems, including:• Heart disease• Glucose intolerance• Nervous conditions• Immune system disorders• Acute respiratory disease/asthma• Easy susceptibility to colds and flu• Diabetes• Allergies• Depression• Osteoarthritis• Digestive problems• Reproductive/sexual difficulties• Back pain• Sleep deprivation• Increased fibromyalgia painStress impacts us in different waysMentalWork schedules, school assignments, finances, taking on too much.PhysicalGardening, hiking, moving heavy objects, exercising more than you are used to, strainingyour body.EmotionalRelationship problems, taking care of a lovedone who is sick, grieving the death of someoneclose, losing a job.EnvironmentalThe air, water and food supply often containtoxins that can create havoc in your body.Small doses of stress may actually be goodfor you; these temporary bursts of energy arenatural and normal. But too much stress orstress that lasts for a long time can cause bothshort- and long-term changes to your bodyand mind. The more we understand how stressaffects us, the more we can cope with it.How our sense of stressevolved through the agesLong before humans learned how to copewith modern life, our bodies changed to befinely attuned to a predator’s attack. Whenwe sense danger, our bodies quickly releaseadrenaline (a hormone) into our bloodstreamwhich increases our heart rate, focuses ourattention and allows us to quickly preparefor coming danger. The stress that we had to deal with many yearsago, such as running away from a dangerousanimal, is long gone. However, it has beenreplaced by a much more relentless form ofstress caused by modern life.

If you arechronically stressed, the part of the brainthat controls the stress response is going toconstantly pump out more stress hormones. These hormones may damage your immunecells, which are then less able to respond toinvaders like bacteria or viruses.Take control of stress nowSince stress can eventually wear your bodydown, it’s important to manage it as muchas possible. First, try to identify the thingsin your life that are causing you to stress out:marital problems, work conflicts, or a deathor illness in the family. Once you identifyand understand these stressors, you can beginto find ways to change your environment andmanage them.A growing number of studies shows thatyou can use your mind to help fight stress.Support groups, stress relief and certainvitamin supplements may help alter stresshormone levels and benefit the immunesystem. The best advice of all may be,try not to get too stressed about being stressed.Ways to reduce stress• Implement the 10 Essentials forHealth and Wellness (found onpage 2) into your daily life• Exercise and eat right• Seek out friends to talk to orbuild a social support network• Create peaceful times in your day• Try different relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation, until youfind one that works for you• Don’t smoke• Don’t drink excessively or abuseother substances 123456789123456789How stress is toxic to different areas of your body
  • 10. trivita.comWe are how we eat,as well as what we eatSlow down and savor your foodBy Christa Orecchio, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Holistic Health CounselorAs a nutritionist, I often teach peoplewhat to eat or how to prepare mealsthat are healthier. However, it isequally as important to educate people onthe “hows” of eating, which have a profoundeffect on our health and wellness.Much of our modern lives revolve aroundconvenience and the mounting pressure forsky-high productivity. Many people actuallyfeel that taking the time out to fully enjoy ameal has become something of a guilty pleasure. With this article, I invite you to adopt a counter-cultural stance, and to consider how incrediblyimportant it is to take time out to leisurelyenjoy one of life’s greatest pleasures. How often do you assess your mental/emotionalstate before a meal? Have you noticed how thestate you are in greatly affects not only yourchoices of what to eat, but also how you eat andhow much you eat? Eating in a state of stressconstricts blood flow to our stomach and there-fore greatly impedes digestion. When digestion isnot working properly, bloating, gas, constipation, low energy and ultimately weight gain ensue.Easy and free: become a “slow eater”With the obesity epidemic dangerously onthe rise, part of the solution is to become a sloweater; it’s simple, easy and free. According to astudy recently reported by the BBC, “Speedyeating doubles your risk of weight gain. Fillingyour stomach too quickly interferes with thebody’s feedback system that tells you are full, simply by not letting the signals catch up toconsumption. While wolfing down meals mayhave once had an evolutionary advantage in thetimes of the hunter-gatherers, today, our healthdepends on leaving that habit behind.”To make any change in our lives, we need to firstunderstand clearly where we are at, and set real-istic and attainable goals. What kind of eater areyou? A fast eater, a slow eater? A stand-over-the-kitchen-counter eater? An in-the-car eater? Orperhaps you take most of your daily meals at thecomputer and wonder how that food disappearedso quickly because you cannot evenremember eating it?Mindful eating is the opposite of the feeding“frenzy” that occupies many of us; it involvesusing all of your senses to eat. Notice the color, smell, taste and texture of each bite.Try a few of these simple tipsfor mindful eating:• Sit in silence for one minute before youbegin eating. This is a good time to givethanks. Take three deep breaths.• Eat only when you are sitting down at atable without the distractions of a TV,computer, book or magazine.• Do not eat when you are upset.• Eat until you are 80% full.• Sit for a few minutes after you finisheating; say thanks after your meal, talk with a friend or take a light stroll.• After you are finished, notice how thefood you just ate makes your body feel.Put down that fork and chewThe second part to this equation is chewing.Chewing leads to smooth digestion and greaterassimilation of nutrients. That’s because it initi-ates the release of digestive enzymes and breaksdown food, making vitamins, minerals andproteins available for maximum absorption.Chewing properly involves counting each biteto make sure you chew 20-30 times before youswallow. Practice the simple act of putting yourfork down while you are chewing. These concepts are simple, yet powerful toolstoward living a less stressful life. I stronglyencourage you to make a solid one-weekcommitment to mindful eating and chewing. It won’t be easy, but you will be amazed athow your relationship with food changes andimproves, and how much more peaceful andenergetic you feel. We have so much morecontrol over our own health and well-beingthan we think. Breathe deeply and enjoy! Notice the color, smell, taste andtexture of each bite.10 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness
  • 11. 1-800-991-7116 April 2009 l 11Interest in theadaptogen Rhodiola rosea has becomemainstream news. Lastyear, at a conference ofpsychiatrists, a paper waspresented that sent shockwaves of amazement anddisbelief through theaudience. It was discoveredthat extracts from Rhodiola rosea were as effective as– and often more effective than – other well-known medicines at reducing signs of stresssuch as anxiety and the blues. Have othermedical journals confirmed these findingssince then?Yes! Much more evidence has been publishedon the wonderful plant. As of this writing, 237papers have been published in major, peer-reviewed journals from around the world. Eachone highlights a new aspect of Rhodiola rosea inits role as an adaptogen. Here are a few examplesof some of the most compelling research:Alzheimer’s diseaseWe know that Alzheimer’s disease is stress-related. According to such well-known sourcesas the Mayo Clinic, AD now affects half ofthe people over 85 years of age and over 90%of the people age 75 with the APO E4 gene. One of the proteins that cause Alzheimer’sdisease is called amyloid beta (AB). Thisplaque forms around a brain cell that has beendamaged by stress and spreads to cells in theimmediate area, spreading more cell death ina larger and larger area. Rhodiola rosea worksto hold back the tide of AB by reducing stressand inflammation.Further, Rhodiola rosea works in a “dose-dependent” manner. The easy way to say thisis that “more is better.” In earlier clinical trialsthe effectiveness range was the same amountpresented in a single serving of TriVita’sAdaptogen 10 Plus®. Later experiments showedthat the larger the dose, the better the results.Pain and inflammationThe most frequent diagnosis in North Americais osteoarthritis. Drugs known as COX-2inhibitors have been used to treat the painand inflammation of osteoarthritis, but theseprescription COX-2 inhibitors have beenlinked to grave illness in many people. COX-2inhibitors work by blocking or inhibiting theCOX-2 enzymes: the most common marker ofinflammation in osteoarthritis.Rhodiola rosea also blocks COX-2 enzymes. However, by its very nature as an adaptogen,Rhodiola rosea is non-toxic at any level. Whatis more, Rhodiola rosea also blocked the COX-1enzyme and PLA-2 (a very nasty inflammatoryenzyme associated with emotional stress, heartattacks, arthritis and asthma).Fatigue and concentrationIn a study of how stress causes fatigue, Rhodiola rosea was evaluated using a number of testingmethods. Volunteers who were experiencingstress-related fatigue and “burnout” were giveneither Rhodiola rosea or a placebo (sugar pill).Test participants were asked how well theyremembered numbers and names, their levelof concentration and how depressed they felt.Hormone tests were also taken using standardblood tests along with saliva and urine tests. After just four weeks in the study, the groupof volunteers receiving Rhodiola rosea had morestamina, much less fatigue and a greater abilityto concentrate. Their stress-related hormoneimbalance significantly improved and theyfelt much less “burned-out.”ConclusionRhodiola rosea is an adaptogen with amazingcharacteristics. It works to balance even themost extreme conditions and simply makespeople feel better. This is why I includedRhodiola rosea in Adaptogen 10 Plus andwhy I am sure it will benefit you!See the ad on page 8 to find outmore about Adaptogen 10 Plus.Brazos MinshewTriVita ChiefScience OfficerThe amazingRhodiola Roseaclinical studies confirm the tremendoushealing powers of this unique plantBy Brazos Minshew, Chief Science OfficerDID YOU KNOW...• A large proportion of all aging diseases (as much as 70-80%) arebelieved to occur because the stress level is too high and/or too long.• Rhodiola rosea is a popular plant with a reputation for stimulating thenervous system, decreasing the blues, enhancing work performance, eliminating fatigue and preventing high altitude sickness.• Russian researchers categorized Rhodiola rosea as an adaptogen becauseit helps resist a variety of chemical, biological and physical stressors.• Rhodiola rosea can help increase daytime energy, alertness andendurance, reduce stress and improve sleep. These adaptogens alsocan help accelerate the post-illness recovery process.See the ad on page 8 to find outmore about Adaptogen 10 Plus.
  • 12. trivita.com12 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessEver find yourself overeating,or eating unhealthy foods, when you are stressed out?Stress has been linked to anincrease in emotional eating, so it’sno surprise that many people reachfor that piece of cake or French frieswhen they feel strained or anxious.Learning to avoid both emotionaleating and a stress-linked hormonecan help you lead a healthier life.Cortisol 101Cortisol, a hormone produced in the body bypart of the adrenal gland, is secreted whenthe body experiences stress. Pegged the “stresshormone,” cortisol is typically beneficial to thebody. It plays a significant role in the body’sutilization of fat, protein and carbohydrates,as well as the regulation of cardiovascularfunction. When we are faced with a “fight orflight” circumstance, our cortisol levels rise. Atthis time, the body forms glucose through thebreakdown of muscle protein and the releaseof amino acids. This higher level of glucose, coupled with a decreased use of glucose by thebody, ensures that the brain gets ample energy– to either run away from or fight off – thepresent threat.A small amount of secreted cortisol is good forthe body; however, too much cortisol for toolong can have adverse health effects. Excessivelevels of cortisol are usually caused by a stateof chronic stress, and can lead to a number ofproblems, including:• Impaired brain function• Suppressed thyroid function• Decreased bone density• Damaging effects on the immunesystem, memory and sugar metabolism• Increased appetite• Weight gain (particularly inthe abdomen)• Diabetes• DepressionThe “stress hormone” appetiteCortisol is a powerful signal to increaseappetite and store fat. Higher levels of cortisoltell our brain that we’re hungry. They alsotell our fat cells to store as much fat as theycan without releasing it. Being in a state ofchronic stress can lead to cravings for high-fat,high-carb foods like cookies, candy and greasychips. This reactive habit can lead to dangerousweight gain, specifically around the waist. In fact, chronic stress is considered a majorcontributing factor to obesity.Leanology =stress weight managementThis is where Leanology Weight LossCapsules come in. • 14. trivita.com14 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessParkinson’s diseaseis estimated toaffect one millionAmericans, withthat number expectedto approximatelydouble within thenext 25 years. Whatdo we currently know about thismysterious condition?Although often regarded as an illness amongthe elderly, the average age of diagnosis isactually 60. Parkinson’s disease rarely runs infamilies. For reasons still unknown, men getParkinson’s disease about twice as frequentlyas women, and they tend to get it at a slightlyyounger age than women. The most common reason people seek medicalattention for Parkinson’s disease is becausethey notice a tremor, or shaking, of one oftheir limbs, most often in a hand on just oneside. Other common and early symptoms maybe shuffling or dragging one foot while walking,a sense of stiffness and slowness of movement,a reduction of spontaneous gestures or facialexpression, and poor legibility and small sizeof handwriting. There are even earlier indicators of the disease, including an impaired sense of smell, constipa-tion and depression.A challenge to diagnoseDiagnosing Parkinson’s is challenging, particu-larly very early in the disease when the symptomsmay be troubling but still mild. In this dayof high technology Parkinson’s is most oftendiagnosed when a clinician questions the patientcarefully about symptoms, and then performs aneurological physical examination to look forconfirming signs. Even experienced cliniciansare sometimes uncertain about the diagnosis, and there are no reliable, confirming tests. AnMRI of the brain cannot detect Parkinson’sdisease. Scans that examine brain chemistry arenot entirely reliable for confirming the diagnosis.Although we have learned a lot in recent yearsabout Parkinson’s disease, the fundamentalcause remains elusive. There is often a smallerconcentration of dopamine, a naturallyoccurring brain chemical, in the brains ofpeople with Parkinson’s disease. The neuronsthat make dopamine, located in a small clustertoward the top of the brain, become sick, andsome of them die. Neurons in the spinal cord, and even in the gut, are also affected. Thiswidespread occurrence of the disease helpsaccount for the disease’s diverse symptoms.Other symptoms include sleep disturbances, constipation, bladder problems, erectiledysfunction, excessive sweating and saliva, and even limb pain. Additionally, some peoplemay experience cognitive decline. This is morelikely to occur among the very old who havesevere motor difficulties. The role of healthy eating, physical activity and brain exerciseThe optimal treatment of Parkinson’s diseaseintegrates several components including ahealthy lifestyle with a sound diet, exercise, and social and intellectual engagement. We are physical and social animals and ourbrains require exercise and interaction formaintenance. Research has demonstratedthat naturally occurring brain chemicalsthat encourage brain health and resist injuryincrease in animals that are allowed to exercise.Mature people who walk three times a weekshow improved cognitive function. No two people with Parkinson’s disease areexactly alike, and regimens for treatment, whichoften involve more than one medication, require individual tailoring. The medicationsare beneficial but they also have potentialfor side effects that can sometimes be moretroubling than Parkinson’s disease itself. Usedwith experience and attention they clearlyimprove quality of life.Deep brain stimulation surgery for Parkinson’sdisease, where stimulating electrodes arepermanently implanted in the brain, is gainingattention as a treatment that may be superiorto medications in some patients. The evidence points toward a more favorableoutcome when treatment is initiated earlierrather than later. Putting off treatment maybe detrimental and early intervention isdefinitely preferable.Although the cause of Parkinson’s diseaseis unknown, we now know much more aboutthe disease process. Using this knowledgestudies have been done and are now underwayto develop strategies to slow or ultimatelyhalt the disease progression. For example, energy production within cells is abnormalin Parkinson’s disease, and this may contributeto the cell’s demise. Strategies to enhanceenergy production include CoEnzyme Q-10and creatine. Both of these are currently understudy in clinical trials funded by the NationalInstitutes of Health. The diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is neverhappy news, but knowledge is increasing. The good news is that current treatments aresuccessful and future options are expanding. N. • 19. 1-800-991-7116“The highest heavensbelong to the Lord, but the earth Hehas given to man.”– Psalm 115:16On Easter Sunday just days ago, did you attenda sunrise service outdoors, and marvel at theglories of God’s creation all around? Or was yourcelebration of the Resurrection indoors, with thesunlight streaming in and the air scented withthat emblem of purity and hope, the Easter lily?In either case, how blessed we are to enjoy God’shandiwork not only at this special time, butthroughout each day of every season. We mark another date this month, Earth Day,that to me is also special, an occasion forremembering how precious this earthly gift isto us all. Yes, like us the earth is flawed, andfallen from its once perfect state. And yes, itwas given to us, but not to misuse or take forgranted. We are the temporary caretakers ofGod’s earthly creation, and it is our duty to dosimply that: take care. Our relationship to this material world issomewhat like the one expressed in the versefrom I Corinthians at the top of this page:“your body, His temple.” Yes, our bodies areours for a time, but they are His temple.Similarly, the earth is ours for a time, but allthanks and praise be to God for His creation.Appreciate, yes,but also honor and praiseLet Earth Day be our reminder to not justappreciate the miracles all around us, but tohonor and praise Him who made them. Haveyou ever planted spring bulbs, then watchedthem flower and bloom with pride? Do youharvest a vegetable from your own garden, andshare with neighbors? I’ll bet their appreciationmakes you smile. That’s our human vanity, taking credit for theCreator’s handiwork. It reminds me of a story Ionce heard about a fellow who took over ayour body, His Temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20In caring for God’s creation,we honor the Creatorby Chaplain Gene Hendersonneglected, weedy plot of land. After weeks oflabor, he had transformed it into a gloriousgarden splashed with colorful flowers. Thisgarden was so beautiful that passersby wouldexclaim, “Oh, what a great thing God hasdone!” The man replied, “Yeah, you shouldhave seen it before I got to it.”We need to remember that before “we” got to it,God’s kingdom was perfect. We were designed toenjoy walking through the Garden of Eden withGod, enjoying all the plants and animals, not aweed or a sickness to be found. But even afterAdam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, even afterthey were driven out of paradise, God left tothem and all their descendants this great andglorious world of ours, flaws and all.My garden, His gloryWhen I walk through my garden, I’m amazed. Imarvel at the intricacy of the flowers and thetiny iridescence of hummingbirds. I wonder atthe symmetry of the leaves on the trees. I’mgrateful for it all, and I give thanks to God forthe opportunity to enjoy His creation, every dayof my life on this Earth.Perhaps this Earth Day can be our reminderthat we are caretakers, stewards of God’screation. Perhaps this Earth Day is when werecommit ourselves to the small, personalacts of care that honor our world. Maybe youwalk a bit more and drive a bit less. Maybeyou help members of your household rememberto turn off faucets, turn off lights, turn downthe thermostat or air conditioner. However youdo your part to help conserve and protect, inso doing, you honor God’s creation. This Earth Day, let us all admire the wondersof His hand. Let us do what we can to nurtureand protect this glorious gift we’ve been given. And let us all remember, every day of the year, who created it.This earth day, let us all admire the wondersof His hand. Now,we can add anotherinsult associated withhomocysteine: Elevated HCY in theblood is a sign that irreparable damagemay be happening in the brain. Inyoung children it could also indicatethat autism is developing. The rate of increase of thisdisease is real and frighteningIn 1980, about 3 to 5 infants in 10,000 werediagnosed with autism. By 1997, the numberhad significantly increased: 30 to 35 childrenin 10,000. More recently, in 2007, autismspectrum disorder affected about 1 in 150newborns: nearly 70 in 10,000 children. Now that we understandthe gravity of this affliction, let’s look at some facts. One of the links between homocysteineand autism occurs with the formation of anenzyme, methionine synthase. This enzymeis responsible for recycling toxic levels ofhomocysteine into a beneficial substancecalled methionine. Methionine serves asthe foundation for healthy brain cells. Ifmethionine never forms, then healthy braincells can never form and connect. Excesshomocysteine begins its destructive workon newly developing brain cells which caneventually lead to autism.Autism is an extremelycomplicated disorderThe complications continue when we considerthe many different types and manifestations ofautism. Almost none of the 10 known geneticfoundations for autism are connected to eachother. It’s as if 10 different roads connect ata central location and continue to diverge indifferent directions and in an unpredictableway. That is the chaos of autism. It is also whyresearch is focused on the common links ofautism rather than strictly on causes. Can nutritional supplementationwith HCY Guard®help? The nutrients that reduce homocysteine seemto benefit many with autism. For instance, according to the Autism Research Institute,up to 70% of children with autism benefitfrom methylcobalamin, a form of B-12 that isessential for brain development. There are alsopositive studies on other nutrients, such as B-6,Cysteine and DiMethylGlycine. All of thesenutrients are found in TriVita’s HCY Guard. These nutrients have benefited many peoplewith elevated homocysteine. If you know afamily affected by autism, please feel free toshare this information with them. Encouragethem to ask their healthcare provider if HCYGuard is appropriate for their family member. However, nutrients that help one personwith autism may not help another. So, weencourage everyone to enlist the help of allthe available healthcare professionals as wecombat this epidemic.Bottom line: Elevated homocysteine isstrongly related to the development of autism. However, there is hope because nutritionalsupplementation with HCY Guard helpslower homocysteine levels. We at TriVita wish to express our sympathy andsupport for all families affected by this disorder. We lend our time, talents and energies in thebelief that through nutrients and nurturing,we can all experience greater wellness.by Brazos MinshewBrazos MinshewTriVita ChiefScience Officer

Then you know that being acaregiver has its own stresses, strainsand issues.Caregivers can be unsung angels of mercyfor those in need – but their own needs cantoo often be ignored. While caring for a familymember is a loving, generous act, it can betiring and demanding, too. Sadly, the resultscan be more serious than many people know. One of the biggest studies of caregiver stresscombed nine years of Medicare records toreport on over 500,000 couples over age 65.As reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, in the years after a husband orwife was hospitalized, the risk of death forthe caregiving spouse rose. In some cases, the stress from a spouse being hospitalizedwas so high that the caregiver’s risk of deathwas as high as when a spouse actually dies.Rising stress = falling healthThe researchers behind the Medicare studypointed to several ways that caregiver stresscan build:• When caregivers lose social, emotional, financial or practical support.• When caregivers have health problemsof their own.• When caregivers stop tending to theirown health needs, or turn to unhealthybehaviors like drinking alcohol. For your own well-being, it’s important totake good care of yourself while you do thesame for someone else. Medical expertsoffer these steps to help:Six steps for caregivers’ self-health1. Stay on schedule with your ownmedical needs. Make sure you haveregular checkups, screenings and tests.2. Keep taking your medicines asprescribed. To save time, ask yourdoctor for extra refills, and try tohave your medicines delivered.3. Maintain healthy eating habits – foryour sake, and your loved one’s. If yourloved one is hospitalized, or has longmedical appointments, bring along easy-to-pack sandwiches, salads and fruits.4. Get plenty of rest. Short naps, when possible, can be big energyboosts. When regular sleep is troubled, try listening to soft music, or doingdeep-breathing exercises. If sleepis a continuing problem, talk withyour doctor.5. Stay active. Enjoy any kind of physicalactivity at least 15-30 minutes per day:walking, gardening, cleaning or justgoing up and down stairs can help. Not only will activity help you feelbetter, but it’s also a proven way toreduce stress.6. Manage stress. Giving yourself timeto relax is an important part of self-care. Read, talk on the phone, stretchor whatever helps you unwind.Caregivers Bill of RightsCaregivers have rights, too. These affirmations(author unknown) may comfort and supportyou while you do the same for your loved one.I have the right to take care of myself.I have the right to seek help fromothers.I have the right to maintain parts ofmy life that do not include the personI care for.I have the right to get angry, bedepressed and express difficult feelingsonce in a while.I have the right to reject any attemptto control me through guilt or anger.I have the right to consideration, affection, forgiveness and acceptance.I have the right to take pride in whatI’m doing.I have the right to protectmy individuality. When you think about it, living the 10Essentials (see page 2) really summarizes thebest of self-care, physically, emotionally andspiritually. Calories from beverages are on the riseChapel Hill, North CarolinaAmericans are getting 94% more calories from beverages than they did in the early 1960s, according toresearchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health. That’s an averageof 222 extra calories per day.Beverages comprised 12% of daily calories in 1965; by 2002, beverages accounted for 21% of daily caloricintake. Over the course of the study, calories from whole milk consumption decreased 45%, while caloriesfor alcohol increased 73% and fruit juice calories increased 20%.“This has considerable implications for numerous health outcomes, including obesity and diabetes as thisis just adding several hundred calories daily to our overall caloric intake,” said Barry M. Popkin, Ph.D.,professor of nutrition and one of the lead researchers. “Regardless of beverage type – sodas, milk, orangejuice or beer – those extra calories are not compensated for by a reduction in food intake.”Researchers studied data from the Nationwide Food Consumptive Surveys of 1965 and 1977-1978 andthe National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of 1989-1994 and 1999-2002 to reach theirconclusions. The surveys polled 46,576 Americans aged 19 and up.Antioxidant supplements may help chronic pancreatitisNew Delhi, IndiaAntioxidant supplements helped reduce pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of thepancreas), researchers reported in the January 2009 issue of Gastroenterology. Patients who supplementedfor six months experienced a 2.3 times greater drop in painful days versus patients on a placebo. In the study, 127 patients were divided into two groups: an antioxidant group and placebo group. Participantsin the antioxidant group were given selenium, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, Vitamin E and methionine. Those in the antioxidant group experienced less pain, took fewer pain pills and reported fewer pain-relatedsick days. And, 33% of them reported being pain-free over six months.Researchers concluded that antioxidant supplementation effectively relieved pain and reduced levels ofoxidative stress in those with chronic pancreatitis.Too little sleep can lead to a cold, says new studyPittsburgh, PennsylvaniaPeople who get fewer than seven hours of sleep are three times more likely to catch a cold than those whoget eight or more hours, researchers from Carnegie Mellon University reported in the January 2009 Archivesof Internal Medicine. And if a person has trouble falling asleep or wakes up periodically, they are over fivetimes more likely to catch a cold.“Although sleep’s relationship with the immune system is well-documented, this is the first evidence thateven relatively minor sleep disturbances can influence the body’s reaction to cold viruses,” said SheldonCohen, the Robert E. • 29. “It provides yet another reason why people should make timein their schedules to get a complete night of rest.”In the study, 153 participants were interviewed daily for twoweeks regarding their quality and duration of sleep. Then theywere introduced to a cold virus and sequestered in a hotel forfive days, where they were monitored for cold symptoms. Ofthe 153 participants, 54 caught a cold. Those who reported fewer than seven hours of sleep a nightwere 2.94 times more likely to develop cold symptoms thanthose who reported eight or more hours. Those who did notsleep well – waking up during the night or having difficultyfalling asleep – were 5.5 times more likely to develop a cold.“Experiments that explore the relationship between sleepand immune function often involve sleep deprivation orstudy subjects with sleep disorders, which are often rooted inpsychiatric conditions that influence other aspects of health,”Cohen explained. “This research points to the role played byordinary, real-life habits in healthy persons.”bLood SugAr Linked To “Senior MoMenTS”New York, New YorkCommon memory lapses, sometimes referred to as “seniormoments,” may be due to rising blood glucose levels, accordingto a study in the December 2008 Annals of Neurology.“This is news even for people without diabetes since bloodglucose levels tend to rise as we grow older. Whether throughphysical exercise, diet or drugs, our research suggests thatimproving glucose metabolism could help some of us avert thecognitive slide that occurs in many of us as we age,” said leadresearcher Scott A. Small, M.D., associate professor of neurologyin the Sergievsky Center and in the Taub Institute for Researchon Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain at ColumbiaUniversity Medical Center.Researchers discovered that blood sugar can affect the dentategyrus, an area of the brain within the hippocampus that isinvolved in memory and learning.“Beyond the obvious conclusion that preventing late-life diseasewould benefit the aging hippocampus, our findings suggest thatmaintaining blood sugar levels, even in the absence of diabetes, could help maintain aspects of cognitive health. More specifically, our findings predict that any intervention that causes a decreasein blood glucose should increase dentate gyrus function andwould therefore be cognitively beneficial,” said Dr. Small.Previous research conducted by Dr. Small has shown that physicalexercise causes an improvement in dentate gyrus function.Article from Michael Ellison continued from page 2...Answering yes to any of these can be a sign that you arenot handling the stress in your life. Remember, none of uscan escape stressful situations. That is why the body has astress mechanism to help us; it is called the flight or fightresponse. It is quite fascinating to see how the body goesinto the response mode when an event or situation appearsto threaten us.First, the hypothalamus at the base of your brain sets offthe alarm to your nervous system. Two major things happenimmediately: the adrenal glands begin pumping extraadrenaline to the body systems, elevating the heart rate andblood pressure. Then cortisol (the primary stress hormone)increases the sugars or glucose into the bloodstream, addingthe energy supplies, while at the same time affecting theimmune system, the digestive system and the reproductivesystem. This all happens because an emergency has occurredand the body is in an all-out emergency alert. I think we allrecognize that the body cannot stay in that state for a longperiod of time without bad things beginning to happen. When you are under chronic stress, stomach conditions canbegin to develop, as well as skin conditions such as rashes. Youmay also experience pain throughout the muscles and joints, which may contribute to a weakened state that opens the doorto disease. And that’s just the physical manifestations of stress!See how stress could be affecting you in different ways.By recognizing the symptoms of stress in our lives, we canbetter manage our stress and add the nutrients that can helpwith it. Why do we emphasize deep breathing as a health andwellness benefit? Because learning to control your breathingis one of the greatest health practices; it will cost you nothingbut will give substantial rewards. Modern medicine nowpromotes breathing as a major contributor to health as it willhelp lower your blood pressure immediately, aid in calming youdown, as well as help your lymphatic system rid your body oftoxins, which are harmful to your health.I hope you will take the valuable information in thispublication and make stress management an important partof your daily life – it will add quality of life to your days!1-800-991-7116 April 2009 l 29PHYSICALLY EMOTIONALLY BEHAVIORALLYMuscle pain Inability to relax Excessive eatingChest pain Depression Angry outburstsStomach problems SadnessNeed alcohol ordrugs to relaxLoss of sex drive Burnout Crying spells
  • 30. trivita.com30 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessCan a belly laugh or giggle really providehealth benefits? It seems too good tobe true, but research shows laughtercan help reduce stress, strengthen the immunesystem and increase the threshold of pain.Laughing out loud can have an impact in thefollowing six areas:Hormones: Cortisol (which helps regulateblood pressure and cardiovascular function),adrenaline, dopamine (a chemical found inparts of the brain), and growth hormone are allconsidered stress hormones. Studies conductedat Loma Linda University School of Medicineshow that laughter actually reduces the level ofthese stress hormones. Researchers found thatthe experience of laughter lowers serum cortisollevels and increases the number of T cells thathave helper/suppresser receptors. In other words, laughter helps boost the immune system andlowers stress.Muscles: When your body is strained, laughing relaxes tense muscles, speeds oxygeninto your system and lowers blood pressure.Mind over matter: When you need adiversion from feelings of anger, hurt or guilt, laughing can be the best distraction. It takesthe focus away from both negative thoughtsand physical pain.Exercise: A strong belly laugh exercises thediaphragm and abdomen and even gives theshoulders a workout so your muscles are morerelaxed. It also provides a good workout forthe heart and for your brain. In fact, laughingintensely exercises nerves in the brain andfacial muscles you do not ordinarily use.Personal perspective: Experts suggestthat adding laughter to stressful situations canchange your perspective from viewing somethingas a “threat” to seeing it as a “challenge.” A“challenge” seems more positive than a “threat”and will therefore be easier to tackle. Learningto face a challenge by adding humor can helprelieve the stress you are experiencing.Social circles: The saying “laughter iscontagious” is recognized almost anywhere –and it’s true! When you laugh, you bringlaughter to others, and affect them positively.Laughter connects people, and can improvethe quality of social interaction. Think aboutthe last time you were in a group setting andhad a good laugh. There’s no denying howuplifting laughter can be.Now that you know how laughter can benefityou, check out these tips for finding laughterin every corner:1. Laugh with friends. Ever notice thatwhen you’re with friends, ordinaryevents seem funnier? Friends make fora great time, no matter what’s on theagenda. Enjoy a cup of coffee and funnyconversation. Go see a comedy showtogether. You may notice the jokes seemfunnier when you’re in a crowd than onyour own. Host a fun game night andplan on being silly.2. Enjoy a sitcom. “Sitcom” is shorthandfor situation comedy; they were originallybroadcast on radio to entertain audiencesand make them laugh. With all thesitcoms on TV today, at least a few willhave you giggling.3. Search for humor. Sometimes, if thehumor isn’t there, and the day just seemslike it’s getting worse and worse, try tofind humor in your situation. It maybe a challenge, but if you change yourperspective, you’ll find yourself laughing at how ridiculous your day has turnedout, instead of focusing on all thenegative things that have happened.Remember, laughing costs you nothing, andcan help lighten your mood, reduce your stressand boost your immune system.
