leven years ago this month,
TriVita, Inc. was founded on
the keys to living a fulfilling,
healthy life of purpose. We call them
the 10 Essentials for Health and
Wellness, and they’ve helped guide
countless numbers of people on
their wellness journeys.
As we celebrate another exciting year
in TriVita’s mission of helping people
experience wellness, we urge you to let
the 10 Essentials be your daily guide to
achieving optimal physical, emotional
and spiritual health. Experience
Wellness®
with us as we embark on
another purposeful year.
Essential #1: Breathe Deeply
Inhale a full measure of reviving air, hold,
then release stress and toxins.
A healthy immune system is dependent upon
deep breathing. Your lymphatic system powers
the immune response in your body, and lymph
fluid moves as you inhale and exhale – by deep
breathing. What a simple way to help your body
stay healthy.
Essential #2: Drink Water
It’s the original energy drink: pour in its
power and feel alive.
Feeling tired? Drink up to help your mind and
body stay in balance, clear away waste and use
food efficiently. Many people drag through life
in a state of dehydration, when this formula
could help: half your body weight is the number
of ounces of water you should drink daily.
Essential #3: Sleep Peacefully
Let a regular sleep routine rejuvenate and
repair both body and mind.
It’s a fact: too little sleep can set us up for
premature aging, depression and other serious
health issues. Consider a research study
among nurses, which found that those who
got sufficient sleep were much less likely to
suffer a heart attack than those who were
in “sleep debt.”
Essential #4: Eat Nutritiously
A healthy life runs on healthy food:
enjoy the benefits of both.
Supplements alone don’t bring good health: Food
is the primary source of nutrients that literally
fuel life. Let vegetables and fruits (preferably
fresh) be your daily source of antioxidants and
fiber, go easy on high-fat, sugary snacks and sodas,
and choose lean protein.
Essential #5: Enjoy Activity
It feels good because it’s good for you: get
up and move every day.
Did you know? Exercise benefits both mind and
body. It can improve your mood and outlook on
life, give you more energy, promote flexibility
and strength and help your body work better in
almost every way. Another plus: Physical activity
can enhance healthy aging.
Essential #6: Give and Receive Love
A heart that loves spreads joy – and builds
a stronger immune system!
Healthy, loving relationships are key to truly
experiencing wellness. The nurturing you
receive from loved ones helps you and your
immune system stay healthy. And, your own
emotional and spiritual growth depend upon
loving yourself and others.
Essential #7: Be Forgiving
Release yourself from the burden of
grudges, and welcome in peace.
Holding on to past resentments doesn’t just
cloud your emotional health: your physical
self can respond to such negative feelings with
stomach problems, muscle aches and more. Let
go of those real or imagined grudges. Learn
the habit of forgiveness and you’ll feel better
within moments.
Essential #8: Practice Gratitude
An “attitude of gratitude” brings more
happiness, health and calm.
When was the last time you stopped to count
your blessings? Focus on the positive to boost
your emotional health, and reduce stress and the
damage it causes. You’ll not only feel better, but
you’ll be better: stress can age you faster, and put
a burden on your immune system.
Essential #9: Develop Acceptance
Free yourself from worry: accept what you
can’t change and move on.
When you know there are things in life that
you can’t change, you free yourself to handle
the things you can change. It’s a powerful tool
for creating wellness: a mind cleared of needless
worry, ready to help you enjoy all the blessings
of your life.
Essential #10: Develop a
Relationship with God
To cultivate your own well-being and
happiness, nourish your spirit.
People who nurture their spiritual selves every
day get real benefits: lower blood pressure, fewer
strokes and less emotional turmoil. What’s more,
those with strong spiritual ties lose weight more
easily, handle crises better and have a stronger
social life. How’s your spiritual health?

On page 22 Dr. Judy shares her thoughts on
daring to write your own “bucket list.” This
really struck home with me personally, as
I’ve never considered myself a risk-taker or
someone who steps out of her comfort zone
very often. Recently, however, I did something
that shocked my family and friends – tandem
paragliding! If you’re unfamiliar with that, it’s
basically two people (you and a pilot) harnessed
together, jumping off a cliff with a large wing
holding you up.
Needless to say, this isn’t something that I had
on my “bucket list.” This took place a few months
ago when Jon, a close friend, asked me to go
paragliding with him in La Jolla, California.
He has been flying since the ‘70s and assured me
he wouldn’t put me in danger. Keep in mind that
the gliderport area where you take off from is
some 800 feet above sea level. Wanting to be
the daring person I’m really not, I hesitantly
agreed to go.
As we drove up to the gliderport I saw the skies
full of paragliders so I knew the winds were good
and this was actually going to happen. I watched
as other amateurs took to the skies with their
tandem pilots, and each came back raving about
their experience and how amazing it was. I began
to feel very confident.
Well that confidence was short-lived after I was
loaded down with a heavy pack and Jon told me
to run toward the edge of the cliff. I thought my
part would be a piece of cake, since he held the

We often hear you talk about “Optimal Wellness” –
what does this mean to you?
Optimal Wellness is a state of being. When someone asks “How are you?”
we might reply “I feel good” – we look at wellness as the way we feel, but it
isn’t about feeling: it’s about being. You can have the physical capacity to do
something without feeling the energy to do it. For example, this morning I
didn’t feel like working out at 6:30, but 10 minutes into it I felt great. Optimal
Wellness isn’t an arrival, or a destination point. I would define Optimal
Wellness like this:
Physically, it is having the vitality and energy to do the things you need
and love to do.
Emotionally, it is when our lives are filled with positive emotions – love,
gratitude, forgiveness, acceptance. It’s really an Optimal Wellness response you
are having to both external and internal conditions.
Spiritually, it is being connected to God and His purposes for your life.
Optimal Wellness in my opinion is the highest quality of life a person can live
as it does not depend on external conditions or feelings in the way you live
your life. It is internally driven.
As our TriVita community knows, we advocate practicing the 10 Essentials
daily to help people live more joyful lives through better physical, emotional
and spiritual health (see page 2). This is the foundation we use to build Optimal
Wellness. Optimal Wellness means elevating the state you’re in. You might
think of it as a variation on the Army slogan, “Be all you can be.” But my
version, my definition of Optimal Wellness, is “Being all you can be.”
July marks TriVita’s 11th year of helping people on their
wellness journeys, and it’s a year sparked with tremendous
excitement. The VitaJournal is privileged to feature this
interview with CEO Michael Ellison as he shares his personal
perspectives on: “Optimal Wellness.”

Personal perspectives on living

5. So does Optimal Wellness mean living
the 10 Essentials?
In pursuit of Optimal Wellness, there should be a
plan… a plan for you to receive something we all
need every day. The 10 Essentials are a road map
to get you to Optimal Wellness. Perhaps this is a
huge concept for people to accept but they are
the essentials to wellness. Do you realize that
nine of the 10 Essentials are about nurturing? Of
course, it’s vital for us to receive all the nutrients
our physical bodies need; most people do not get
them from food, so that is why we offer targeted
nutrition through our nutritional products. But
the larger question is, “How do I nurture myself
every day so I have the health and wellness to
fulfill my life purposes?” The 10 Essentials are
there to guide you.
Has your idea of wellness changed
over the years?
Absolutely. My views are much more focused on
the nurturing, emotional side of wellness now. I’ve
come to understand the significant role that
positive emotion plays in our wellness, including
our physical wellness. For example, if your life is
filled with anger or hostility, this creates a
chemical imbalance in the body. It weakens the
cells, and sets us up for illness. Or look at the
impact of stress. Stress can lead to overeating,
which leads to obesity, which we know contrib-
utes to so many health problems.
Remember, we’re not human doings, but human
beings. Optimal Wellness is about finding
and living in that state of being where you
nurture yourself.
How has your experience leading TriVita
affected your view of wellness?
I recognize how challenging it is to lead people
in changing their attitudes and behaviors.
We in North America have been influenced
significantly by a “treatment mentality”: If you
have a health problem, you go to a doctor and
take a pill. Please understand: I think healthcare
professionals are important, and provide vital
services for us all. But ask almost anyone in the
medical community what the solution is to our
current health crisis, and they’ll tell you that the
answer is living healthier: getting the nutrients
and nurturing that we need physically, emotion-
ally and spiritually.
When we live the 10 Essentials, we can be
internally-driven to make the best choices for
ourselves. Without the self-nurturing from the
10 Essentials, we remain externally-driven, and
subject to outside influences. Food marketers, for
example, are brilliant at using our appetites for
sugar, salt and fat. But these things in excess do
not promote Optimal Wellness. So, we have to
identify something that’s bigger than those
appetites, something that will motivate people to
change their attitude and behaviors towards
wellness and give themselves a higher quality of
life. Maybe that “something” is your children or
grandchildren, for example. They’re important to
you, so you’ll do the things that give you Optimal
Wellness so you can be with them, doing the
things they love to do while being an example for
their quality of life.
TriVita has been on the forefront of healthy
living for years. Does that bring you
satisfaction?
Yes, but my greatest satisfaction is all the phone
calls, emails and letters I receive from people who
have their “Aha!” moment. That’s when they
realize that the 10 Essentials are so simple yet so
powerful. They begin to embrace them, by
starting with a product like Nopalea™, for
example. As it helps lower inflammation and
raises their quality of life, they’re motivated to
do more for themselves, to nurture themselves
by integrating more of the 10 Essentials into
their daily lives.
When you consider your own life purpose,
has that changed over the years?
Today, I can say that my life purpose has changed
in its expression, but not the core. I’ve travelled
the world and seen the poorest of human condi-
tions, and those experiences touch my heart and
soul. Since I was a little boy, I’ve felt compassion
for the suffering of others, and so humanitari-
anism has always been and will be a part of my
life. But today, helping people have quality
nutraceutical products and the information
to inspire and support their practice of the
10 Essentials for Optimal Wellness living is
the expression of my life purpose.
We’ve heard you use the phrase “wealth and
wellness.” How do they connect?
When I use the phrase “wealth and wellness,” I’m
not talking about wealth for opulent living. I’m
talking about wealth as having the resources
necessary to fulfill your life purpose. I believe life
purpose wealth, which includes relationships and
money, is available to every person, at any age. If
you don’t have purpose, you really don’t need
wealth or wellness.
What can we do every day to help enjoy
Optimal Wellness?
Practice the 10 Essentials. Remember, this doesn’t
mean you won’t have a setback from time to time,
and it isn’t about arriving at an “ultimate” place.
It means you’re giving yourself the vitality and
energy needed to fulfill your life purpose, to
optimize your internally-driven life.
What obstacles to Optimal Wellness should
we be aware of?
Everything centers around attitudes and behav-
iors, and how we respond to external influences.
The key is awareness: if we’re aware of these
influences, then we can be internally driven by
our values and our purpose. The greatest insight
you can have about yourself is to see the differ-
ence between external and internal influences.
What final thoughts would you like to share
about Optimal Wellness?
It’s not a destination – it’s a journey. It’s not about
feeling – it’s about being.
It’s about being connected to those things that
are important in helping you fulfill your life
purpose. It’s about filling your life each day with
vitality and energy from proper nutrients and
nurturing, and feeling connected to God for His
purpose for your life. If you have all this, you have
Optimal Wellness.

6. An undiagnosed deficiency could be grave
Let me be clear about just what the issue
is: when surgery involves the use of nitrous
oxide, or “laughing gas,” if a doctor or dentist
is unaware that the patient has a B-12 defi-
ciency, the results could be disastrous. Nitrous
oxide (chemically, N2O) is often used to reduce
pain and serve as an anesthetic during surgi-
cal and dental procedures. Its ability to make
people feel euphoric and “giggly” also makes it
a popular substance for abuse. In either case,
an unusual side effect of nitrous oxide is that it
actually inactivates B-12 in the body.
That’s right: laughing gas can actually strip your
mind and body of the benefits of B-12. In some
cases, this can lead to nerve and brain damage,
mental confusion and even trouble performing
such simple physical acts as walking. So, if your
B-12 levels are too low, or you have trouble
absorbing B-12 and aren’t aware of it, no matter
how healthy you are otherwise, surgery could
have serious and unintended results.
This isn’t a new finding. As documented in the
book Could It Be B-12? by Sally Pacholok, R.N.
and Jeffrey Stuart, D.O., the connection with
nitrous oxide was known decades ago.
The authors quote noted neurosurgeons
as saying, “N2O is very dangerous in the
B-12-deficient patient. Because B-12 deficiency
is not uncommon and N2O use is widespread,
the potential exists in every (surgical) practice
for this complication to occur.”
A pre-surgery “shot” is no solution
Even when surgeons or dentists are alert to
the potential problem of nitrous oxide and
B-12 deficiency, the preventive step they might
take might be ineffective. Some medical
professionals, trying to avoid possible damage
from nitrous oxide to a B-12-deficient patient,
give a B-12 injection before a procedure.
However, this won’t be of much help to some-
one with a severe deficiency who is exposed to
nitrous for an extended time, or to someone
whose low level of B-12 may have contributed
to their need for a procedure in the first place.
Unfortunately, screening for B-12 deficiencies
before procedures isn’t common. Even more
unfortunately, the medical literature contains
many cases of B-12-deficient patients who
were given nitrous oxide, and after their
procedures suffered mental impairment,
paralysis, numbness or memory problems.
What might be the answer? Certainly, if you
or a loved one is facing a procedure and you
know or suspect a B-12 deficiency, insist on
an anesthetic other than nitrous oxide; there
are several alternatives available. But why not
take care of the deficiency beforehand, and give
yourself all the benefits of B-12?
If you or a loved one may not get all the B-12
needed from food, I encourage you to look into
B-12 supplementation with TriVita’s quality
products. With so much at stake when levels
of B-12 are low, why not give yourself the
healthy advantage?

Surgery and low B-12: potential danger
Why and when you could be at risk
T
oday’s modern surgical methods can be a life-saving or life-enhancing
advantage to so many people, but there are risks. As you probably
know, no surgery is risk-free, no matter how “minor” it might be. But
did you know that low levels of the powerhouse Vitamin B-12 could add to
that risk? This is important information for you and anyone you care for when
a surgical procedure is scheduled.

“Super B-12 has made such
a difference in our lives,...”
“It was almost three years ago
that my wife and I started
using TriVita Super Sublin-
gual B-12 for energy, and we
couldn’t be happier about our choice. My
wife, who is 75 years young, operates her own
house-cleaning business. To say that Super
B-12 has been an energy booster for her is
putting it mildly: she cleans a home each day
– sometimes two! I don’t know many people
her age who can keep up a schedule like that. I
operate multiple businesses myself, and Super
B-12 is a great help to me, too.
About a year and a half ago I started cleaning
yards part-time for both exercise, and to bring
in a little extra money. Now at 84 years young,
I can say I always feel better by being outside
doing yard work, and I know Super B-12 gets
a lot of the credit for helping me to carry out
this kind of work. I can’t tell you what it means
to me to have the energy and stamina to work
outdoors sometimes for hours at a time.
We really appreciate TriVita and its fine
products. Since Super B-12 has made such
a difference in our lives, of course we tried
Nopalea, the new wellness drink, and we like
it, too. Thank you, TriVita!”

S
ummer may be synonymous with outdoor
fun, but too much heat exposure can be
dangerous, leading to conditions such as
heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke – and
sometimes even death. From 1979-2003, exces-
sive heat exposure led to 8,015 deaths in the
United States. That’s more deaths from heat
exposure than from hurricanes, lightning,
tornadoes, floods and earthquakes combined.
Take precautions
When extreme heat hits, protect yourself and
loved ones against heat-related illnesses by
applying these tips from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC):
• Drink plenty of fluids – During hot weather,
increase your fluid intake and don’t wait to
drink until you’re thirsty. If exercising,
drink even more.
• Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen –
Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose
clothing. If you must go outdoors, wear a
wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and apply
sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
• Schedule outdoor activities carefully – If you
must be outdoors, try to limit your activity
to morning and evening hours. Rest often
in shady areas.
• Stay cool indoors – Stay indoors and if
possible, in an air-conditioned room. If your
home doesn’t have air conditioning, go to the
mall or public library. Some areas offer
heat-relief shelters.
• Monitor those at high risk – Infants and
young children, adults over 65, people who
are overweight, and those who are ill are at
increased risk for heat-related illnesses.
Recognize the signs of overheating
Your body cools itself by sweating and with
circulatory changes. But if heat increases to
such a level that your body can’t handle it,
or it can’t compensate for fluids and salt lost
through perspiration, the temperature of
your body’s inner core rises, which can lead
to heat-related illnesses.
Recognize the symptoms and learn the
first aid treatment for these common
heat-related illnesses:
Too hot
to handle
Avoiding heat-related illness
Heat Disorder Symptoms First Aid
Heat cramps Painful spasms usually in muscles of legs and
abdomen. Heavy sweating.
Firm pressure on cramping muscles, or gentle massage to relieve
spasm. Give sips of water. If nausea occurs, discontinue use.
Heat exhaustion Heavy sweating, weakness. Skin cold, pale and
clammy. Pulse fast and weak. Normal tempera-
ture possible. Fainting and vomiting.
Get victim out of sun. Have them lie down and loosen clothing.
Apply cool wet cloths. Fan or move victim to cool room. Have
them sip water. If nausea occurs, discontinue use. If vomiting
continues, seek immediate medical attention.
Heat stroke (or sunstroke) High body temperature (106°F or higher).
Hot dry skin. Rapid and strong pulse.
Possible unconsciousness.
Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency. Summon medical
assistance or get the victim to a hospital immediately. Delay
can be fatal. Move the victim to a cooler environment. Reduce
body temperature with cold bath or sponging. Use extreme caution.
Remove clothing, use fans and air conditioners. If temperature rises
again, repeat process. Do not give fluids.
Food and heat: a dangerous combo
Summer heat can harm you in yet another way: through spoiled food.
Food-borne bacteria thrive in heat and quickly multiply on food, increasing
your chances of food poisoning. Help protect against food-borne illness
while outdoors this summer with these tips from the CDC:
• Have disposable washcloths or moist towelettes available for washing
your hands and surfaces.
• Keep raw meats and their juices away from other foods. Thoroughly
wash anything that held or touched raw meat before using it for
cooked food.
• Cook meat and poultry completely at your picnic/outdoor site. Meats
partially cooked at home can encourage bacterial growth.
• Replenish ice in your cooler as soon as it starts melting and keep coolers
in the shadiest, coolest areas possible.
By taking some simple and common-sense precautions, you can enjoy
a healthy, worry-free summer.

a second breath.”
“I’m on the phone all day talking with people
about TriVita products, and because of a
breathing condition I’ve had for over two
decades I always had to take a breath to be able
to finish a sentence. After taking Nopalea,
though, I noticed that my lung capacity has
greatly increased. I was delighted to realize that
I could talk more easily. Now, I can finish a
sentence without taking a second breath. This
was a new and wonderful experience!”
Easier breathing wasn’t the only happy result
Jackie experienced from Nopalea. For years,
she had problems with inflamed,
painful joints and muscles, and swollen ankles.
“If I did a little bit of exercise, my muscles
would ache so much it would keep me up at
night,” she reports. “I couldn’t do the simplest
household chores, like mopping a floor, without
suffering from muscle and joint pain. As a
result, I wasn’t sleeping well. And being in pain
all the time just robs you of your joy.”
That all changed after Nopalea, though.
“After I started drinking Nopalea every day,
the muscle and joint pain stopped, and the
swelling in my ankles went away. I can walk
more quickly without being short of breath.
I can now exercise all I want without fear
of pain,” she says.
Jackie is thrilled about her Nopalea results (you
can hear it in her voice), and doesn’t hesitate to
share the good news with others. “Several of my
family members take Nopalea with great
success,” she relates. She’s thrilled, too, about
working with a company whose products have
helped so many on their own wellness journeys.
And, Jackie also enjoys additional benefits
from other TriVita products.
“When I began working at TriVita I started
learning what great nutritional supplements
can do for optimal health,” she says. She started
off with Sublingual B-12, and her new energy
was “amazing – I felt like crying, crying for joy
for the new me.” Jackie has also had great results
with OmegaPrime®
and CoEnzyme Q-10.
All in all, joining TriVita has truly changed
Jackie’s life for the better. “Before coming
to work here, I felt like I was 90 years old, but
now I am just 65 feeling
like 50. I feel so much
healthier and have so
much more zest. I thank
the Lord for Michael
Ellison and TriVita.”

12. Agave nectar as a sweetener
The history of agave
W
hat does science say about
agave as a sweetener? First,
let’s take a look at how
agave has been used historically. We
can go back several hundred years to
the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican
Indians who would use agave syrup
internally and externally to help fight
off infections, to help fend off bacteria
that might get into external wounds,
and to help bolster digestion and to
settle the stomach.
Benefits of agave
The benefits of agave syrup have been studied in
modern times: For example, agave nectar was
studied regarding its impact on cholesterol.
Cholesterol may have a bad rap but it is a
normal, natural part of human metabolism.
In fact, we need cholesterol, but not an overpro-
duction of cholesterol which happens because of
stress, when our immune system is disrupted
and when our hormone systems are disrupted.
It turns out that when we take agave, our
cholesterol level goes down, indicating that
it’s actually beneficial for our immune system,
it’s beneficial as a stress reducer and it’s beneficial
in helping us balance our hormones. Studies
on agave nectar have also shown improvements
in markers of metabolic syndrome, a pre-
diabetic condition.
All things in moderation
All of this tells us that agave nectar is very good
in general. Now, we have to say that too much
of anything is going to be bad for you. Most
scientists are telling us that if we keep our
fructose intake to 12 grams or less per day, then
we’re going to do quite well, and fructose is not
going to be bad for us. Remember that number.
Now, when we look at the amount of fructose
that comes in a single serving of Nopalea™, we
find that it is about 2-3 grams. So you can take
5 or 6 servings of Nopalea in a single day
without it becoming problematic. We gave
people a 16 ounce bottle a day for three weeks
and measured their blood sugar before they
started taking it and again after three weeks.
And you know what we found? No disturbances
in glucose metabolism. Cholesterol levels went
down, kidney function improved and inflamma-
tory markers like C-reactive protein came down.
All of these things are attributed to the Nopal
cactus superfruit, but in this array we must
include the benefits of agave nectar – and this is
the reason we use it. So, don’t drink too much
agave; don’t think that it’s the new all-you-can-
eat food. You have to remember: everything in
moderation, nothing in excess. Remember too,
that health only comes from healthy habits
practiced every day.

With the explosion of cellphones,
texting, mobile applications, game
consoles and more, it can seem that
the world is tethered to technology.
Even if you keep electronics in
their proper place as conveniences,
you may have a friend or family
member who could benefit from
this look at a modern phenomenon:
addiction to video games.
I
s a child in your life too plugged-in to the
world of video games? It’s happening more
and more, to the point where “video game
addiction” is becoming a recognized mental
and behavioral disorder. In fact, the signs of
video game addiction are very much like the red
flags for obsessive gambling.
Of course, not everyone who plays video
games is addicted, and many youngsters (and
adults) enjoy gaming because it lets them solve
problems, be creative, sharpen hand-eye coordi-
nation and even improve language and math
skills. That may help explain why last year, over
11 million people played the wildly popular
“World of Warcraft,” an online, fee-based
multiplayer game.
Still, like any obsessive behavior, video game
addiction can shut a child off to other healthy
aspects of life.
“Fun” that goes too far: warning signs
One study of young people’s gaming habits
showed that almost one in 10 were displaying
the same types of behavior that characterize
gambling addiction. This is called “pathological”
gaming, and it’s a growing problem as video
games become more a part of everyday “virtual”
life. The damage can affect family and social
relationships, school performance and/or overall
psychological health.
Compared to non-pathological gamers, those
addicted to gameplay tend to exhibit these signs:
• Lying to family and friends about video
game usage
• Using video games to escape from problems
or bad feelings
• Becoming restless or irritable when trying to
stop playing video games
• Skipping homework to play video games
• Doing poorly on a school assignment or test
because of time spent playing video games
These video game “addicts” are reported to
spend about 24 hours each week playing
games. In addition to the problems above,
they also tend to have more physical health
problems than those whose gaming activities
are under control.
What can be done?
As players “win” at video games, they advance
to new levels, and this can make it difficult to
stop playing. Experts urge parents to talk with
their children about gaming, to set limits on
gaming time, and to explain why limits are
a good idea.
Unlike, say, a board game, video games can’t be
stopped at any point without losing a player’s
progress. Gamers usually need to get to a point
where they can save their play, so it can be
useful for a parent to give a 15-minute warning
before they want a child to stop. If a child claims
he can’t stop after 15 minutes, that’s a sign that
the game needs to be turned off.
Video game addiction is a serious issue, and
shouldn’t be ignored as just a “stage.” In fact, it’s
become such a major issue that the American
Medical Association has considered including it
in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders. If you’re concerned about the gaming
behaviors of a child in your life, consulting with
your family’s healthcare provider is a good
place to start.

imple words can’t begin
to express my gratitude
to TriVita.” With these
impassioned thoughts Susie M.
recounts her amazing recovery from
serious illness. “I have taken Nopalea
for just one month, and the change
and improvements in my health have
been nothing less than miraculous.”
For many years Susie suffered from various
autoimmune diseases, inflammation, allergies
and chronic breathing problems. “Now, for
the first time in seven years, I feel great,” she
exclaims. “I thank our God and TriVita for the
gift of Nopalea. It has tremendously improved
my life. After long periods of chronic infections,
debilitating breathing problems and countless
rounds of steroids and antibiotics, I am
experiencing a wellness that amazes me.”
A lengthy struggle against illness
Susie battled numerous debilitating conditions
for most of her adult life. “I didn’t really want to
be an unhealthy person,” says this Ashburn,
Virginia resident, “so I just kept pushing
through, focusing on my goals, my relationships
and the wonderful journey called life.” Susie
considers herself an eternal optimist. However,
about seven years ago, she was no longer able to
pretend that she was healthy. Susie’s life began
to deteriorate in ways that compromised her
quality of life, her work and her ability to be
actively involved in the lives of her husband
and children. Her chronic respiratory infections
and allergies were “off the charts” and shots
were not an option due to the severity of her
allergies. Susie’s doctors were bewildered and
unable to help, beyond managing the symptoms
with countless steroids and antibiotics.
All these problems were severely
affecting her career as a marriage
and family therapist, with a full
client load, as well as teaching,
speaking and writing. Then in 2003,
more misery came into her life when
she was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in
her thyroid. Luckily, after surgery and treat-
ments, she has been tumor-free for over six
years. However, this cycle of illness prevented
her from working with others to fulfill her life’s
purposes… and to be actively involved in the
lives of her children.
Nopalea’s magnificent impact
Susie seemed to be at the end of her tether,
when the miracle she was looking for came
along… and it was called Nopalea. This aston-
ishing wellness drink caused an amazing
transformation. “After only two weeks of
taking Nopalea, my husband and I went on a
three-hour hike,” she remembers. “I was not
only able to keep up, but there was no recovery
time, no backlash or consequences to this
rigorous activity.” Her husband, John, remarked,
“How wonderful it was to have my wife back.”
After continuing to take Nopalea, Susie had
barely any allergy or breathing troubles, even
after walking at least 45 minutes every day, and
in spite of the fact that the pollen count was so
high that various media outlets were advising
people to stay inside. “I am thrilled to say that
since taking Nopalea I have been able to go on
long walks and breathe easier than ever. Before
Nopalea, I was not able to do any physical
activity for the past four years.”
Sharing their hope for a healthier future
Susie and John have talked extensively about
their dreams and goals and have decided to
build a successful TriVita business, in order to
bless others and fulfill their life purposes.
“We feel that we have been called upon to share
the overflowing wellness that is available
through Nopalea,” Susie enthuses. “We are
telling everyone we know about the hope and
health that are available to them. We are
focused and faith-filled as we build a business
that will offer health and wellness to so many in
need. TriVita and Nopalea have blessed us, and
we know that we can and will make a difference
in many lives around the world.”*

“I’ve not felt this well in a long, long time!”
“I’d love to share my testimony about how much
Nopalea has improved my life!
I’ve suffered from migraines for over 14 years.
These migraines have sometimes lasted for days
on end. Some migraines are hormonal, but others
are due to inflammation. I was just about to go
to the doctors to get a prescription for this
condition when my mom suggested Nopalea. I
started with the Nopalea Loading Phase about
three weeks ago and have been feeling great! I
have hardly had any migraines except the one
day I didn’t take Nopalea. When I forgot to
take Nopalea while I was away from my house
all day, the inflammation started at the base of
the back of my head and moved forward into a
full-blown migraine.
Usually, I have a headache even when I don’t
have a migraine. Those are gone, too! One day,
when I felt one coming on, I reached for Nopalea
instead of a pain reliever. Just two ounces of
Nopalea took my headache away.
I’ve not felt this well in a long, long time!”*
Mandy H., Member – Potomac Falls, VA
“I noticed that the pain and inflammation in
my neck and shoulders subsided greatly.”
“Wow! I love TriVita’s Sonoran Bloom Nopalea…
it’s fantastic! Two days after beginning the
Nopalea Loading Phase, I noticed that the pain
and inflammation in my neck and shoulders
subsided greatly. By the fourth day, I was almost
completely free of inflammation and neck pain. I
have now been taking Nopalea each day for over
a month. I sleep better, my neck feels good and
my constant fatigue and body ache symptoms
have all subsided. I am so grateful to be pain free
and feeling better.
I am very hypersensitive to foods, medicines and
supplements so in my case, I started out by taking
three ounces, and after just three days I went to
two ounces a day. I have already shared Nopalea
with two friends and they love the taste. After
completing the Nopalea Loading Phase, one of
my friends has noticed that it is helping to clear
up her chronic cough.
Thank you for making such a wonderful product
that can help so many different people with
health issues.”
Andrea S., Member – San Diego, CA
“Nopalea is a wonderful, wonderful miracle
that has given me tremendous relief.”
“I have taken several TriVita products with great
success. About two months ago I ordered Nopalea
and consumed a couple of bottles. Then I decided
to purchase two more bottles. One day I got out
of bed and had such pain in my big left toe that I
literally cried. I got down on my knees and prayed
for help. It was early in the morning and I had
nothing in the house for pain. Then I opened the
refrigerator and saw the bottle of Nopalea. I knew
it worked for inflammation and pain and I was
desperate, so I took the suggested Loading Phase
of three ounces.
Within a half hour, I was feeling much less pain
and I stayed pain-free for the rest of the day. In
fact, later that afternoon I got on my bicycle and
rode to church 15 miles away. The next day
I woke up with similar toe pain, but not quite as
bad. I once again took three ounces, and as the
previous day, experienced quick relief. That night
I took three ounces before I went to bed. There
was no pain the following morning. Nopalea is a
wonderful, wonderful miracle that has given me
tremendous relief.”

Harry E. – Arcadia, FL Daughters of Judy H. – Henrico, VA Steve N. – Carlsbad, CA
“It is totally worth it to see both of my
daughters in less pain.”
“I purchased Nopalea for my oldest daughter a
few months ago because she suffers pain in her
lower back and legs. She has spent thousands of
dollars in medical bills and nothing has helped.
My daughter said she would try Nopalea if I
bought it. After one month on this wellness
drink, she could tell a huge difference and now
doesn’t go a day without it. She finally has relief
from her pain.
My youngest daughter was experiencing pain
in her arm and left leg. Her arm pain eventually
went away, but the leg cramp continued. The
doctor suggested that she take an over-the-
counter pain reliever for 10 days, but I decided
to order her the Nopalea.
Soon after taking the Loading Phase every day,
her pain became less consistent and she now
rarely has any pain. Car rides or sitting for long
periods of time used to be very uncomfortable
for her. Now it doesn’t bother her at all. Nopalea
tastes really good too, and it is totally worth it
to see both of my daughters in less pain. “ *
Judy H., Member – Henrico, VA
“I think it really helped my recovery from
the hip operation.”
“For over a year I suffered with a progressively
degenerative condition which caused chronic
swelling, stiffness and pain in my left hip. At first
the pain was just a twinge, but then it progressed
to be so painful my co-workers joked that I
walked ‘like an orangutan.’ At first, pool therapy
helped a bit but then it made no difference and
the pain got progressively worse. When X-rays
were taken, it was evident that my left hip joint
was completely calcified yet my right hip showed
no damage. Given this information, I was a
‘perfect’ candidate at age 48 for a total hip
replacement. I was told to expect two days in the
hospital, two weeks on crutches and to not be
able to drive a car for six weeks. The total
recovery was expected to be two months.
I started drinking Nopalea two months before my
operation and continued doing so after. I think it
really helped my recovery from the hip operation
because I only needed the crutches for 10 days. I
was walking comfortably and driving safely just
three weeks to the date after the operation. My
physical therapist, family and friends became
quite interested in the product as they watched
my steady recovery, and it was an easy sell to get
them started. Thank you for making this
outstanding product!”

New findings in health and wellness
Connection between walking and better health
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Walking may help prevent metabolic syndrome, according to a study in the May 2010 American Journal of
Preventive Medicine. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors which together increase the risk of heart disease
and type 2 diabetes.
Researchers examined the results of a 2005-2006 study which measured the number of steps 1,146 people took per
day. Participants were divided into three groups: those who walked fewer than 5,000 steps per day, 5,000 to 9,999
steps per day and 10,000 or more steps per day.
About 56% of people in the “sedentary” group (fewer than 5,000 steps per day) had metabolic syndrome, versus
13% in the 10,000+ steps group.
Risk factors that can make up metabolic syndrome include excess weight in the abdomen, high triglycerides, low
HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, insulin resistance or elevated blood glucose levels.
Bartender, another round of… tissue? Alcohol linked
with increased allergy risk
Copenhagen, Denmark
Drinking alcohol is associated with an increased risk of perennial (year-round) allergies, according to a recent
study in Clinical and Experimental Allergy.
In the study, 5,870 allergy-free women, aged 20-29, were asked to fill out a food frequency/lifestyle questionnaire at
the beginning of the study and were contacted between seven and nine years later. At that time, 831 women had
developed seasonal allergies while 523 had developed perennial allergies. Researchers discovered that the higher
their alcohol intake, the likelier the women were to have developed year-round allergies. Seasonal allergies did not
appear to be affected by alcohol consumption.
Diet rich in B vitamins lowers heart risk
Osaka, Japan
A diet high in the B vitamins folate and B-6 may lower the risk of death from stroke and heart disease
for women, and may reduce the risk of heart failure in men, it was reported in Stroke: Journal of the
American Heart Association.
Researchers at Osaka University analyzed data from 23,119 men and 35,611 women that were part of the Japan
Collaborative Cohort Study. Based on food frequency questionnaires, they found that higher amounts of dietary
folate and B-6 were associated with fewer deaths from heart failure in men, and fewer deaths from stroke, heart
disease and total cardiovascular diseases in women.
Expressing gratitude may strengthen relationships
Tallahassee, Florida
Expressing gratitude toward a friend or loved one may strengthen your relationship, according to study results
from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
In the three-week study, 75 participants were assigned to one of four groups: the first group increased their
expressions of gratitude to a partner or friend; the second group paid close attention to daily activities and
reported on them twice a week; the third group brought up positive memories to their partner/friend twice
a week; and the fourth group was instructed to pay attention to events that made them feel grateful toward
a partner/friend.

life’s everyday mysteries from the

Is it true that no two snow crystals are alike?
Yes. The probability that two snow crystals will be
exactly alike, in molecular structure and in appear-
ance, is very minute. And to prove otherwise would
not be easy. Each winter there are about 1 septillion
(1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or a trillion
trillion) snow crystals that drop from the sky.
How do fortunes get inside of fortune cookies?
The cookies are baked as flat circles. After they are
removed from the oven, slips of paper are folded
inside while the cookies are still warm and flexible.
As the fortune cookies cool, they harden into shape.
Why does chopping an onion make you cry?
Unstable chemicals. Onions produce a chemical
irritant that stimulates your eyes’ tear glands.
Why do geese fly in a V?
First, it conserves their energy. Each bird flies slightly
above the bird in front of him, resulting in a
reduction of wind resistance. The second benefit
to the V formation is that it is easy to keep track of
every bird in the group. Flying in formation may
assist with the communication and coordination
within the group.
Why don’t I fall out when a roller coaster goes
upside down?
Gravity is counteracted by the force of acceleration,
which is the force that pushes you forward.
Why do fingers and toes wrinkle
in the bathtub?
The outermost layer of the skin swells when it
absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin
underneath, so it compensates for the increased
area by wrinkling. However, new research is
investigating the role of digital vasoconstriction
(narrowing of blood vessels) in water immersion
wrinkling of the skin.
How does an hourglass measure time?
By using carefully calculated amounts of sand. Also,
the type and quality of sand is key. It must have a
rate of flow that does not fluctuate. Sand that is too
coarse will wear away the glass, eventually making
the neck too large. Most important is the ratio of
the neck (the hole, or tube) width to the diameter
of the sand particles.

W
hen someone is trying to lose weight,
one common piece of advice is “Eat
only when you are hungry.” It sounds
simple enough, but the reasons that people eat
can be very complex, and many have nothing
at all to do with hunger. Our internal cues are
influenced by all sorts of other signals streaming
in from the outside. Do you recognize yourself in
any of these patterns?
The myth of the “light lunch”
Feeling virtuous because you had a “light
lunch?” Chances are good that you’re making
up for it later in the day. A study conducted at
the National Center for Toxicology monitored
the amount of fat typically eaten at lunch by
17 subjects. When people thought they were
eating less fat at lunch, they ate more calories
than when they were told the meal was high-
fat. They also ate more of their calories from
fat compared to both the “low-fat” and
“normal” periods.
Early diners
You skip breakfast and grab a lunchtime snack
from the vending machine. Before you know
it, it’s four o’clock and the most you’ve eaten
is a few pretzels. So when you walk through
the door after work, you make a beeline
to the fridge.
Researchers from the City University of New
York combed through the food diaries of more
than 1,800 women looking for a connection
between women’s weight and what percentage
of their daily calories they ate after 5 p.m.
Women who consume most of their calories
before 5 p.m. generally eat a more healthful
diet than those who pack more calories in
after hours.
Eat to the beat
Listening to a zippy little mealtime tune may
seem festive, but it can encourage you to eat
more than you intended. Several studies have
shown that our forks seem to move faster to
mealtime music. When fast music is played
during meals, people eat more bites per minute,
take bigger bites, chew their food less and eat
more calories than when slower music or no
music is played.
The key to taming the cues:
“conscious” eating
Does all this mean you should eat alone in a
quiet room with blinders on? Of course not.
Researchers are just beginning to figure out
the complexities of our eating behaviors.
Here are some tips to help you get the upper
hand at mealtimes:
Learn your body’s hunger cues
Everyone’s body responds differently to hunger.
Maybe your stomach growls, or you have
trouble concentrating. Maybe your stomach just
feels empty. Know how to read your signals.
When you reach for seconds or that bag of
chips, stop and listen to your body. Are you
really hungry?
Set a calm mealtime atmosphere
Avoid controversial topics during meals.
Talking about how you can’t afford a new roof
or the layoffs at the office can wait until after
dinner. Come to the table relaxed. Take five
minutes to close your eyes and take some deep
breaths. Turn the music off or play some
mellow tunes.
Give your body time to register the meal
Eat slowly and wait at least fifteen minutes
before reaching for seconds. It takes that
long for your stomach to signal your brain
that it is full.
Savor your food
Even if you’re caught up in conversation with
others, be sure to appreciate the textures,
flavors and aromas of your food.

handles controlling the wing, but running with a 30 pound pack on
my back against the resistance of the wind was difficult and I wasn’t
braced enough when the winds grabbed hold of the wing. I suddenly
found myself being dragged down to the ground, with him following
suit. With the heavy pack on my back, I didn’t have the strength in
my body to get myself up!
Finally after floundering like a turtle on its back, I made it up and
we attempted to run toward the edge of the cliff again. I almost felt
like we were in a three-legged race! As the wind caught the wing,
it began to lift us up slightly, but would continue to dip down, so
my legs were still running even after we were airborne! I must have
looked like a hamster in a wheel as we finally lifted off the grassy
area. My goal of trying to look cool and experienced was shot down
in front of witnesses – quite embarrassing, to say the least!
When I finally got into the seat comfortably and we were airborne,
I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest. But then
I took a deep breath and viewed my surroundings. As I looked
down at the magnificent ocean and the green hillsides, I was
completely in awe. I suddenly felt very secure in the chair and
began to take photos. Large birds were flying around us along with
a handful of other paragliders. It was truly an experience I will
never forget. We flew for 45 minutes before we had to land on the
beach since the winds had died down too much to allow landing
back at the gliderport.
I can’t describe the way I felt when it was all said and done. The
whole experience made me so pleased with myself that at this
stage of my life, I actually did something extremely daring and
uncharacteristic. I now find myself wondering what else I can
take on! You see, staying in a comfort zone can create a rut. I read
a quote recently by Lawrence J. Peter that said, “A rut is a grave
with the ends knocked out.” I’m not telling everyone to go jump
off a cliff, but sometimes you need to experience a little discomfort
to get more comfortable. What areas of your life do you consider
uncharted territory? Take some time this summer to explore them
and you might just improve your life!

O
ne night
last week I
was out to
dinner with a few
friends. The topic
turned to making a
wish list of things
to do before our lives were over.
We discussed the usual things
at the top of everyone’s list –
traveling to faraway places and
daring to do the things we’ve
always wanted to try.
We laughed as we reminisced
about the scenes from a 2007
movie, “The Bucket List”
with Jack Nicholson and
Morgan Freeman.
Daring to do the extraordinary
This movie is about two terminally ill men,
Carter Chambers (Freeman) and Edward Cole
(Nicholson), who decide to make their wish lists
come true and begin a daring adventure of travel
around the world. They start crossing items off
the list as they go sky-diving together, get tattoos
on their hands, drive a Shelby Mustang, go on a
lion safari in Africa and ride motorcycles on the
Great Wall of China.
After discussing the movie with my friends, I
decided to rent the movie and have a few good
laughs again and find inspiration for my own list.
I wanted to experience extraordinary adventure
in my life. I wasn’t prepared for the message that
seemed to shout at me as I watched the movie for
the second time.
I was stunned into silence as I viewed the scene
of Carter and Edward atop a tomb, viewing the
Egyptian pyramids. They confide in each other
about faith and family, revealing that Carter has
long been feeling less in love with his wife and
that Edward is deeply hurt by his estrangement
with his only daughter.
Carter tells Edward that the ancient Egyptians
had a beautiful belief about death – when the
souls arrived at the entrance gate of heaven
they were asked two questions. Their answers
would determine whether they were admitted
or not. The two questions asked were, “Have
you found joy in your life?” and “Has your life
brought joy to others?”
I put the movie on pause as I reflected on this
scene. These two questions about giving and
receiving joy seemed to sum up for me the
meaning of life and the two most important
things to put on my “list” along with the other
extraordinary adventures already listed there.
George Bernard Shaw said it so well in his poem
The True Joy of Life:
“This is the true joy of life.
The being used for a purpose
Recognized by yourself as a mighty one.”
In short, what is it that you are here to do? What
pulls you out of bed in the morning and keeps
you awake at night with excitement and won’t
let you go? What tasks must you do to make
your own music on this planet? You know.
Deep down you know.
Dare to find joy
The bottom line here is that you should find
meaning and happiness in everything you choose
to put on your “bucket list,” whether it’s the
African Safari or writing a letter asking someone
you’ve hurt to forgive you. Don’t get hung up on
trying to compete with others and their lists.
Do what’s meaningful to you.
Maybe it’s time to discover the real joy in
your life.

Don’t take a vacation
from your giving
By Chaplain Gene Henderson
Gene Henderson
“Each man should give what
he has decided in his heart to
give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a
cheerful giver.”
– 2 Corinthians 9:7
Imagine if God went on
vacation. Nothing long-term,
mind you, just a week or
two off in the summer to re-charge, spend time
admiring His handiwork, and then get back
to loving and providing for us. Of course it’s
unthinkable… but that’s what many folks do
when they “take a break” this time of year
from their spirituality. I’m not just talking
about skipping church here, but skipping the
opportunity to share what we have with others.
With vacations and “summer hours” during
this season, it’s easy to forget that the needs
of those less fortunate are present year ‘round,
and not just during the cold winter holidays.
So I’m suggesting that we borrow a slogan from
the stores and shopping malls, and revive
the real spirit of charity and love behind
“Christmas in July.” Let’s let our giving spirit
be manifest this summer, and not take a vacation
from generosity.
Some misunderstand the nature of giving
Even when we don’t stop to appreciate our
blessings, take part in a worship service or give to
church and charity, God is always present, giving
to us. Let’s look at this idea of giving in depth: I
think some people misunderstand the nature of
giving that God spells out in Scripture.
So many times, we think that giving is a form of
suffering. The idea seems to be that if it really
hurts, it’s really spiritual, but I don’t think that’s
what God intends at all. Let’s say you have $20 in
your pocket ‘til next payday, you’re in church,
and you feel the need to “dig deep” when the
offering plate comes around. If you throw that
$20 in the plate, I think God’s reaction might be,
“Whoa, what are you going to do for gas? Don’t
put that $20 in there – I never said that!” What
our Lord did say, in 2 Corinthians, is that He
loves a “cheerful giver.” Notice that He didn’t say
“reckless giver” or “impulsive giver.” By “cheerful,”
He means giving out of our blessings… planning
to give… sharing with others as generously as
possible. Scripture tells us that we are blessed to
be a blessing in the lives of others. Certainly,
there are times to give out of your need and to
dig deep for God.
Remember, as we learn in 2 Corinthians 9:6,
“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows generously will also reap
generously.” If you donate to church or charity
just occasionally, and out of a feeling of obliga-
tion, well, you’ll reap only occasional grace. But
if you give in the spirit of faith and love, sharing
your abundance as you’re able, you will be
generously blessed. Think of yourself in that
church pew with your last $20. You’re sitting
there with no plan for giving, you didn’t discuss
the situation with God, and now you hear
somebody preach and you start feeling guilty.
“Gosh,” you might think to yourself, “what will
God think of me if I don’t give this money?” God
has told us to prepare in advance for our giving.
After all, how can we be “cheerful givers” if our
gift means not feeding our family this week? In
the Amplified Version, 2 Corinthians 9:10 goes
on to say: “And (God) Who provides seed for the
sower and bread for eating will also provide and
multiply your (resources for) sowing and increase
the fruits of your righteousness (which manifests
itself in active goodness, kindness, and charity).”
So now, in July, the year 2010 is more than half
gone. Now is the time for Christmas in July, for
remembering that giving is an all-year event.
Now we should be praying about our plan for
the rest of the year, so that we can give out of
joy. Will you help out at a soup kitchen once
a week? Give an extra $5 regularly to your
church’s building fund? Donate that most
precious gift of time to volunteer at a senior
center or crisis shelter?
Keep that idea of sowing and reaping in mind.
The question we all need to ask ourselves this
summer is, “What can I do now to plant that
harvest so I can give cheerfully?” Truly, giving
is a way to honor and worship God, year ‘round.

Now, time to get moving!
Put it on ice – Escape the summer heat at an ice
skating rink. Strap on some figure or hockey skates
and give it a whirl.
Join a league – Want to enjoy activity while

Stay hydrated for health
Drinking pure, clear water is always
important, but never more so than when
exercising and in hot weather. Your
body can lose more than a quart of water
in just one hour of exercise! Remember
to drink water before, during and
after activity.
Help meet your daily hydration needs
with these tips from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention:
• Carry a water bottle for easy
access when you are at work or
running errands.
• Freeze some freezer-safe water bottles.
Take one with you for ice-cold water all
day long.
• Choose water instead of sugar-sweet-
ened drinks.
• Choose water instead of other bever-
ages when eating out.
• Give your water a little pizzazz by
adding a wedge of lime, lemon or even
cucumber slices.
Never wait to drink until you feel thirsty:
that’s a sign that dehydration is right
around the corner.

o you write down your
thoughts and feelings? If not,
you may want to consider
journaling: a wide range of both
mental and physical health benefits
has been associated with this
age-old method of self-expression.
Journaling can help you:
• Relieve stress
• Ease anxiety
• Problem solve
• Improve your mood
• Get to know yourself
One study even found that journaling helped
improve working memory: Participants who
wrote about a negative personal experience
stopped thinking about it as much, freeing
their mind for other thoughts. Additionally,
consistent journaling has been shown to help
improve the immune system, liver and lung
function, and blood pressure over time.
Get in on the benefits
With all these benefits (and more), you owe it to
yourself to take pen to paper. Don’t know where
to begin? Follow these easy steps to jump-start
your writing.
1. Pick your supplies – First things first: you’re
going to need something to write on.
Anything from a fancy, leather-bound journal
to the back side of a grocery list – and
everything in between – will work.
2. Pick a time – Try writing at the same time
each day; this will make it easier to develop
the journaling habit. Start with five minutes
of writing and work your way up to 20.
However, your personal circumstances
will dictate how long you wish to write
on particular days; after all, some days,
we just have more to talk about!
3. Pick a place – Select a location conducive to
journaling: a quiet room in your house, in
your garden or perhaps a local coffee shop.
Anyplace you won’t be disturbed and that
won’t stifle your thoughts.
4. Pick a topic – If the words don’t automati-
cally flow from your pen, think of something
that happened during the day and explore
your reaction to it. Or detail a conversation
you had with a family member or co-worker.
Write about a person who has impacted your
life, or about some of life’s ups-and-downs
you’ve personally experienced. Eventually,
you’ll have no problem coming up with things
to write about.
Now you’re ready to begin. Just remember, if you
don’t want anyone to read your journal, be sure
to keep it in a secure spot!
If you’d like to share your thoughts with
others, try creating your own blog on the
Internet. “Blog” is a contraction of the term
“web log” and is an online journal where you
can write about any number of topics.
To learn how to create a blog, go to
google.com and search the phrase “create
a blog.” It’s fairly easy to set up, and you can
allow people to become “followers” of your
posts. You may be surprised at the gratification
you feel after you begin to blog regularly.

The benefits of journaling

Joy and sadness are normal, basic
human emotions. They are feelings
that arise from our current experi-
ence, remembered experiences of the
past or anticipated experiences in the
future. These emotions may even arise
when we empathize with someone else,
sharing their joy or sadness.
Sadness may also come completely unbidden – we
experience nothing that would trigger sadness; we
simply feel sad. Often there is a biochemical basis
for this feeling. What might that be?
Three types of sadness
We all experience the healthy emotion of sadness
that comes from loss. You see, we become so
attached to people and things in our life that the
loss of anything is really a loss of ourselves. The
losses may be minor, provoking minor degrees of
sadness. Or, the loss may be catastrophic,
provoking profound sadness that may spiral
downward into clinical depression.
Sadness may also arise from conflicted thinking:
wishing that events should unfold in a particular
way. We invest our time, energies and anticipa-
tion in a particular outcome. When life does not
harmonize with our desires, we can become sad.
If life consistently fails to meet our expectations
we become despondent. Helplessness and
hopelessness over time are hallmarks of
clinical depression.
Another kind of sadness completely divorced
from the experience of loss or conflicted thinking
is based in brain biochemistry. Many things can
create this form of melancholy. For example, a
poor diet or nutrient deficiencies can create
chemical imbalances in the brain. Exposure to
certain toxic substances may alter brain chemistry
and produce a gloom that does not lift until the
toxin is resolved.
A common cause for SAD
All imbalances in the brain or body are rooted in
four causes: trauma or injury, toxins and poisons,
deficiencies and emotional distress (stress). One of
the most common deficiencies causing sadness is a
lack of sunlight. Since there is less sunlight
during the winter season, people suffering with
this deficiency are said to experience “Seasonal
Affective Disorder (SAD).” (The word “affect”
describes mood and emotions.) According to
the American Academy of Family Practice,
up to 20% of the general population experiences
significant melancholic mood changes
during winter.
Let the sun shine
SAD is caused by a lack of sunlight. Humans are
diurnal (as opposed to nocturnal) animals: we are
awake during the day and asleep at night. It is
important to recognize this biological drive to
understand SAD. When humans are deprived of
proper sunlight, our biological clock becomes
disrupted. This internal clock regulates our sleep/
wake cycle and more. Our biological clock also
regulates our adrenal gland function, our thyroid
function and the major hormone-regulating
mechanisms in our brain. When these hormones
are disrupted because of a deficiency of light, our
brain chemistry is disrupted and SAD may result.
Fortunately, there is an easy remedy for sunlight
deficiency: sunlight! Twenty minutes of bright
morning sun as well as twenty minutes of evening
twilight sun can fill this critical deficiency, reset
our biological clock and balance hormones. By
exposing ourselves to sunlight now we alter our
brain chemistry to become more sensitive
to future exposure. So we’ll need less exposure
in the winter if we get adequate exposure
during the summer.
Sunlight is a simple, natural, safe remedy for
SAD. So, feel free to get the appropriate amount
early or later in the day.
