Poetry is an art form in which language is used for its aesthetic qualities in

or literary works in which language is used in a manner that is felt by its user and
audience to differ from ordinary prose. It may use condensed or compressed form to
convey emotion or ideas to the reader's or listener's mind or ear. It may also use
devices such as assonance and repetition to achieve musical or incantatory effects.
Poems frequently rely for their effect on imagery, word association, and the musical
qualities of the language used.

STORIES THEMES
2.1 THE WAKING
The Waking
by Theodore Roethke
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

2.2 THE NIGHT BEFORE GOOD-BYE
The Night Before Good-Bye
by Mitsuye Yamada
Mama is mending
My underwear
While my brothers sleep
Her husband taken away by the FBI
One son lured away by the Army
Now another son and daughter
Lusting for the free world outside.
She must let go.
The war goes on
She will take one still small son
And join Papa in internment
To make a family.
Still sewing
Squinting in the dim light
In room C barrack 4 block 4
She whispers
Remember
Keep your underwear
In good repair
In case of accident
Don’t bring shame
On us.

4.0 PERSONAL RESPONDS
From the poem that we had analysed, we choose to give our personal
response based on the poem The Waking by Theodore Roethke. This poem appears
on the surface to be a dissection of the process of sleeping and waking up to a world
that is itself a dream. However, further inspection brings up a few interesting
transcendental ideas and what appears to be an interpretation of the meanings of life
and death. It also serves as an agnostic depiction of what the end of life could be
like, and brings up an interesting theory to support it. This poem also allows the
readers to draw their own conclusions, while perplexing the mind and causing the
readers to think of their own answers to the age old question of what is life and
death? From this poem the writer’s speaks to all people about the balance between
our desires to figure out the meaning of life while accepting the fact that the time
allotted to human beings to figure out the answer is mostly spent simply like waking
and sleeping.
For me, I choose this poem because it’s simple and smooth diction that
describes the message very clearly. I can easily understand every stanza on this
poem and can be conclude by myself. I also like this poem, The Waking by
Theodore Roethke because it’s definitely brought me to think that our life cannot be
separate to the dead and it always around us. Dies is perpetuated by the cycle of
life, so that the worlds of the living and the dead are never fully separate. It’s related
to the nature of the world. Therefore, we should value our short time on this Earth to
try and make our own meanings of life.
“I wake to sleep and take my waking slow; I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.”
This describes his personal feeling about death being spontaneous and that there is
no point of having fear of death. Although the thought of death is very scary and
uncomfortable, the eloquence in which the poem is written in gives the reader a
comforting feeling. Besides, in this poem the writer’s said that sleeping is the like a
small sample of death, which means we all experience a tiny sample of death each
and every night. This poem basically tells the readers to no fear death as we
experience it in small quantities every night.

“I hear my being dance from ear to ear” is the poet’s description of his mind
trying to absorb as much as life, while trying to figure out his purpose. The poem
basically describes the human tendencies to think about why we are here and what
we are supposed do. To encouraging the journey to the knowledge of what we are,
but that the journey is more important than the answer to the question. Moreover, the
fact that we will all die someday but what matters is not when, how, or why we die
but rather how we live. Therefore, when we have to face our fears sometime so we
should try to conquer them and be brave in doing so.
All living things including plants, animals and people will die. Especially
people, it may be the hardest thing to accept someone lost their beloved person.
However, the best that we can do is accepting death as a fact of life. We can’t do
anything to change it. Sometimes younger people die. Sometimes a person gets
very sick. Nothing can keep this person’s body working accept hard work from
doctors and medicines. Sometimes people die in an accident. This may be the
hardest for families to deal with because it happens so fast. When we lost someone
that we loved, it hurts. There are no person will be around playing and have fun with
us.
Last two years, I had a pet. I thought that maybe my cat dies because when I
walked into my house, my cat was gone. I was cried because my beloved cat had
gone. I search it everywhere but i didn’t found it. A few months later, I learn that I
need to accept this, and all of things happen to us, God knows and got the reasons.
However, that doesn’t mean we are stop missing people who died. We must still
have continue to our lives, still remember and loving them always. But, if I am going
to die someday, the thing that I should do now is life. I will do the best as a child,
student and friend to peoples around me. I will do things that they will proud of me
before I die.
There are many things about death we do not know. We know that it will
happen someday to all of us. As a human being, we have to do the best things in our
life to get what we want and hopefully the things that we do in our life before we die,
got a bless from God. However, we need to remember and believe that there must
be some blessing in what had happened.

5.0 CONCLUSION
After we finish up our assignment, we’ve studied that, poetry is important
because it lets the people who think of life more symbolically and meaningfully the
ability to express ourselve. Poetry usually shows many ranges from humorousness
to the serious struggles of human lives, depending on the author’s feelings. The
author’s write poetry to express things that they could not express otherwise or
maybe to remember or they felt about something. So, when we read the poetry that
we choose, it is important for us to try to feel what the author is trying to feel.
From here, we can find the meaning of the poetry. Some poetry that we know
is as plain as day or some poetry we have to really think about and try to relate it.
Based on analyze of poem, we studied that before understand the poem, we must
read the poem multiple times before to approach it for the deeper meaning. Giving a
chance to thoroughly and fully experience the poem is the best way. When there are
any unfamiliar words, go instead to focus on the larger meaning of the poem. Search
at the dictionary for those unfamiliar words.
However, poetry is one of the most difficult and demanding literary works to
interpret and understand. Poems range in length, style, theme, and draw out their
meaning. Analyze poetry takes practice. Try different poems and different authors
may develop our skills. Next, researching the author of a poem will often provide
additional insight into the themes and style of his or her work.
Besides that, writing personal response based on the poem that have been
choosen, can relate ourself or something or someone or anything at all to the poem.
A personal response is completely individual. It is all about how we see the poem
and what we feel about it.

poem it can relate to the nature of the world and appreciating life. So for me, this
poem definitely brought me to remember that the worlds of the living and the dead
are never fully separate. I also learn without an experiencing something about
myself, I cannot truly identify with it. So this poem also gives me an impact to
