The MDGs - Span <ul><li>The eight broad MDGs (as well as the specific targets and indicators) span: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>poverty reduction, </li></ul></ul><ul><li>primary education, </li></ul><ul><li>gender parity, </li></ul><ul><li>child mortality, </li></ul><ul><li>maternal mortality, </li></ul><ul><li>reversal of diseases, </li></ul><ul><li>environmental sustainability, and </li></ul><ul><li>development cooperation. </li></ul>

The MDGs - Challenges <ul><li>achievement of the targets – instruments, trade- offs , complementarities, sequencing ; </li></ul><ul><li>measuring progress towards targets; </li></ul><ul><li>valuing outcomes in multi-dimensional space; </li></ul><ul><li>sustainability of outcomes; </li></ul><ul><li>structural change where uncertainty and learning effects are critical; </li></ul><ul><li>coordination between different policy institutions. </li></ul><ul><li>Note : These problems are significant for both globally- and domestically-driven planning initiatives. </li></ul>
