World Cultures
Think about culture!
• What words do you think abou?
What aspect of culture do you think
    each picture represents?
Which culture is each picture from?
Now, think about these cultures!
Choose one of them and compare it to
         your own culture?
Use superlatives. What are the best
       things about Colombia?
• What things should you not miss?

• Use “miss” with a second verb!
Do the text as a listening…
• What does each person say? Which aspect of
  each culture shouldn’t be missed?
Do B
• Look at these sentences! Are they active or
  passive?
Look at the sentences you have
written! Write down all of the
differences between them and these
             sentences!
Katie has been learning to bake for
            two years
Rosie has written a book about Kenya..
The main difference is that the two
        mention PEOPLE!
Passive expressions
      What’s the difference?
• She ate the orange.
• The orange is eaten.
Make “active” or “passive” sentences
    with the following pictures….
• Look at the structure provided on page 23.

• When do we use passive sentences?
To pay the bill
To sign a paper
To eat/have a starter
To eat a main course
To eat/have a dessert
To sing a song
To paint a picture
Look at the words in “Speaking
              naturally”.
• Is there anything strange about these words?
• What do they have in common?
MIME – You are a monkey at a dinner
              party!
What kind of things would a monkey
        do at a dinner party?
• Are these good things to do?

• What kinds of things would you do?

• THESF ARE BAD AND GOOD MANNERS!

• What other good and bad manners can you
  think of?
Work in pairs – What does each phrase
mean? (Maybe act the phrases out).
What things are good manners and
what things are bad manners in
               Colombia?
• C – Copy the structures from A.

• Think of an example of the following,

• Verb + ing is rude.
• (gerund)
• It is impolite to go to party
  + preposition
+ verb +compliment.
• It’s rude + infinite
               (to + verb)
Look at p25! How do we make these
       expressions negative?
Give me examples of subjects in
               English!
• Now, we can use verb like subjects.
• Smiling is polite when you
  e meet someone new!

• Running is healthy.
Can you think of an example of this?
What prepositions can you think of in
             English?
What form of the verb do we use after
         the preposition?
• He finished writing
  about travelling
  around the world.
Can you think of an example of this?
After adjectives we use the infinitive
• It’s nice to
  offer to paint
  people.
Which of the following structures
      applies to the following?
• Look at the questions!
If you want to say something
   very clearly and without
    confusion, then we say
     something DIRECTLY
Is it easy to life abroad?
• Have you ever considered living abroad?
Write down your “for” and “against”s
          of living abroad.
• Do this in groups.
Now, swap and summarise what the
       other group has said.
Do the text as a listeining! What things
       would you both “miss”?
• What things would the man in the text miss?
Do you remember in level 9 when you
     talked about impressions?
• What words can you use to make a sentence
  more certain?

• It’s definitely a good idea.

• It might be a bad idea.

• WHICH OF THESE IS MORE CERTAIN? WHY?
WHAT DO THE ABOVE SENTENCES MEAN?
A – Look at the light blue box!
• Which are the 2 MOST direct sentences of the
  following?
Which are the more direct and less
    direct comments in the text?
• How do we make comments less direct?
  – Might
  – May
  – Maybe
  – Perhaps

• LOOK AT THE COMMENTS IN B. MAKE THEM
  “MORE” AND “LESS” DIRECT!
Do the listening!
Lesson D - Proverbs
  • Counting chickens!
What is a proverb?
I’ve got a tail so I’ll wag with the rest!
A hungry dog thinks only of meat!
Yer ees bigger than yer belly! (Your eye
is bigger than than your belly)
We're aw Jock Tamson's berns! (We
 are all Jock Thomson's choldren).
Do gach fear a sgarabh fhein
Find all of the proverbs in the text!

• How many proverbs are
  there?

• IN PAIRS! Work out the
  meaning of the proverb!
Do you have any very good proverbs in
              Spanish?
• Do you have like the ones in C.
What do you think the proverbs in 2
              mean?
• Write 100 words about your favourite
  proverb!
