members of the group (do not tell them your
  answers yet).
• 2. Mark down if you think their answers are true
  or false.

  • Everyone write one truth and one lie about
themselves. Make it difficult to guess.

  • We will then go around, and when the music

Grammar Review: Contractions and
         Conditionals
Conditionals
• Verb to Like
I would like to be a dentist

I’d like to be a dentist

Using “would” means that action has not happened
yet but it may in the future
The verb To Like indicates that it’s something that
                     you want.
To Be
                  I am a dentist
                  He is a dentist
                 You are a dentist

• Pay attention to the pronoun and conjugation of
                    the verb “to be.”
  • Pay attention to the use of a definite article a
before the noun (a job in this case)
   • Or the article an when the job starts with a
                  vowel (a, e, I, o, u)
             Example: an accountant
Lets Brainstorm “Wh” questions for
        when we meet people.
• Please write these down in your handouts
• How to formally greet people in America: eye
contact, initiation, hand shake, tone of voice
• I will play music. When it stops please stop
and greet someone and ask a “Wh” question
(refer to Unit 1, 3 for help)
Open your books.
• Complete speaking exercise 6A
• Get up and find a partner and ask them what is
  going on in each picture.
      example: What are they doing?
They are going for a walk

Pay attention to pronouns for singular use: (he/she)
What is he doing/ what is she doing?
And plural usage (for a group): use “they”
Weekly Schedule
• As medical practitioners you will have to
  understand people’s schedules

• Days of the Week: Monday, Tuesday,

----------------------------------------------------
What do you do Thursday evening?
What do you do Friday evening?
Answering Questions

Lets take a break! Simon Says Game
                again!
• This time I am going to let you all run the
  game.
• Remember: basic vocabulary, head, shoulder’s
  knees and toes.
• I am going to introduce: mouth, chest, back,
chin before you begin. Try and include these
  words if you can.
Lets look at Grammar Box 8A
• Verb to be Review:
Are you an actor?
• Verb to be: You are  interrogative form we
  inverse to: Are you?

• Do not answer with just yes/or no.
• Follow up with a “to be” statement:

             Yes, I am. (positive)
            No, I’m not. (negative)
Is she a pilot?
• Notice how the interrogative form inverses
the present tense conjugation: She Is  to Is
  She?

Follow Up Answers both using the same verb
                   tense To Be:
            Yes, she is. (Affirmative)
No, she isn’t/ No she is not. (Negative)
Are they musicians?
• Inverse of They are  Are they?

In the same way as before…..
Answers follow with the same verb tense “to
be”
          Yes, they are. (affirmative)
          No, they are not. (negative)
Other ways to ask questions:
Verb: To Do
                         I do
                        you do
                       he does
                        we do
                        you do
                        they do

                         Questions?
Notice the inverse when constructing questions.
                          Does He
                           Do we
Do you work in Singapore?
• You do  Do you? (interrogative form)

Following in the same verb tense, with “to do”
                      Answers:
              Yes, I do. (affirmative)
              No, I don’t. (negative)
Does he work in a gym?
• He does  does he? (interrogative)

Following the same verb tense, in present tense
                     form:
                    Answers:
           Yes, he does. (affirmative)
           No, he doesn’t. (negative)
Do they work at home?
• They do  Inversed to Do They (interrogative)

Following in the same verb form, present tense.
                   Answers:
                  Yes, they do
                 No, they don’t
Learning is about realizing patters.
Inverse of subject pronoun and verb tense 
             leads to a question.
Please write four questions
• 2 with the verb form To Be
• 2 with the verb form To Do

After everyone writes their questions we will
circulate and practice asking them to each other.
To complete (8B)
5 Minute Break
We will act out role play 9A
• I will model this role play with two other
  people first
• Split into groups of 3. Practice role play for 2
minutes in each role and then switch so
everyone is A, B and C one time.
9B: Rewrite the Dialogue
First step is underline personal details.
A: Sam, this is Niran. He’s from Thailand.
B: Nice to meet you, Niran. Are you here on
                      vacation?
        C:No, I’m not. I’m a student here.
B: Oh, do you go to City University, too?
C: Yes, I do. Holly and I are in the same class.
B: Oh, is your major art history, too?
C: No, it isn’t. My major is film. But I’m really
              interested in art history.
                     B: Me, too.
Insert personal details, and edit so
     conversation makes sense.
     • A: Bob, this is Kit. He’s from America.
   • B: Nice to meet you, Kit. Are you here on
                         vacation?
       • C:No, I’m not. I’m a teacher here.
• B: Oh, do you work at Sirindhorn College, too?
 • C: Yes, I do. Pam and I are in the same class.
     • B: Oh, is your subject dentistry, too?
  • C: No, it isn’t. I teach English. But I’m really
                interested in dentistry.
                    • B: Me, too.
Rewrite you dialogue in groups of 3 by
   including your personal details.
