4. 4. Long Term Vision

A collaborative staff of educators who utilize 21st Century tools and techniques to teach and learn.

A self sustaining policy of Educational Technology that will thrive on staff participation as an expectation of professionalism and not leave with the building administrator.

 5. 5. Step One

Know the clients……

As educational leader of your school, you must know the Technology Climate of your school. A couple of good first steps to gauge are:

Send an email with a short web article link and ask for a reply

Note who even opened the email and who replies

 6. 6. Step One cont. Know the clients….. As odd as it may sound, some teachers do not yet utilize email as a basic communication tool. This should be a starting point. Set a short term goal for having all staff check email daily. Many parents view email as their preferred method of communication.
 7. 7. SHORT TERM GOALS

Staff email usage daily. Use planning period to at least read and reply. It must be viewed as part of the job.

 8. 8. Email

Email communication is an entry point for collaboration. Staff members who are unwilling to deal with email, likely will never be 21st Century collaborative educators.

Show them the value of their email by learning your system’s program and all the bells and whistles it has.

Help teachers set up groups and see the value of distribution lists.

 9. 9. School Webpage

As a parent, I gauge the true 21st Century professional attitude based on the appearance and frequency of updates to the school and class web pages.

I also look to the teacher profile to determine what sort of professional educator is teaching my child. Empty profiles and class web pages leave me feeling discouraged at the true quality of a 21st Century education my child is receiving.

 10. 10. SHORT TERM GOALS

Staff email usage daily. Use planning period to at least read and reply. It must be viewed as part of the job.

Staff should be given a model, instructions, training, and the expectation to have a professional looking profile and class webpage completed, updated and maintained.

 11. 11. Introduce “Blogs”

Show examples of time tested Educational blogs:

Education News - http://www.thisweekineducation.com/

Internet Culture - http://hickstro.org/

Learning - http://davidwarlick.com/2cents/

Teaching - http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/

Education & Technology - http://www.angelamaiers.com/

 12. 12. Introduce “Blogs”

Select articles from educational blogs and note the discussions on the blog itself. Introduce this as a new way of critical thinking for professionals.

Form discussion groups to locate blog postings that pertain to school, district or state educational goals

Does your School WebPage template allow blogging? If so, put it to use.

 13. 13. Introduce “Blogs”
 14. 14. SHORT TERM GOALS

Staff email usage daily. Use planning period to at least read and reply. It must be viewed as part of the job.

Staff should be given a model, instructions, training, and the expectation to have a professional looking profile and class webpage completed, updated and maintained.

Introduce Educational Blogs

 15. 15. INTRODUCE GOOGLE Every educator should have their own professional Google account to take advantage of Google Tools for Educators and http://www.google.com/educators/index.html
 16. 18. The mystery of RSS

Have your staff login to iGoogle

With Blogging out of the way, it is time to initiate new users to RSS. They don’t really need to know the mechanics of it; instead, give them a visual like iGoogle to see the benefit of bringing news, blogs, interests, articles, together in one place.

“ Google Tools” now set the stage for true teacher collaboration. Sharing documents, calendars and spreadsheets across teams and grade levels only scratches the surface of Google Tools

Create Google accounts and learn to use iGoogle and Google Tools for Educators

 18. 21. Branch Out

Introduce teachers to the 21st Century means to bring other professionals right into their classrooms:

Ning - www.ning.com

Twitter – www.twitter.com

Plurk – www.plurk.com

SKYPE – www.skype.com

 19. 28.
