What is AfL? 
Assessment for Learning is the process of seeking and 
interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers 
to decide where the learners are in their learning, where 
they need to go and how best to get there.
Principles of AfL

 Self and peer assessment 
 Using assessment to inform planning and teaching
Formative and Summative Assessment 
 Summative Assessment- Relying upon formal testing to gain an understanding 
of where children are. 
 Formative assessment- On going assessment to inform planning and teaching-different 
styles of assessment. Observations, speaking and listening tasks, 
pictures as evidence.
