2. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a historic photograph taken on
February 23, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal. It depicts five United
States Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the flag of the
United States atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo
Jima in World War II.
This photograph was famous all over America, when President
Franklin D. Roosevelt saw the photograph he ordered the
surviving men of that photograph to return to the U.S to support
the cause for the war.
This is a powerful photograph in the way that it highlights victory
and pride. This photo was taken 4 days into the battle and the
battle raged on for another 26 days. Three out of the five men
pictured died in battle after the photo was taken.
