2. 2004 2006 2007 2009
This album is Regina
Spektor’s debut album
with a major record
label. The title Soviet
Kitsch is intended to
poke fun at a variant of
communist known as
Stalinism.
This next album is more
toned down from the
previous, and has taken
a softer approach. This
is the look and feel that
she maintains for the
next few albums and
singles.
The cover of this single
directly relates to a
lyric from the track it
features “A pair of dull
scissors in the yellow
light”. The text is in the
same font as was used
on the previous album.
The single “Eet” also
uses the same font as
the 2006 album,
establishing this as
recurring characteristic
of Spektor’s digipaks.
The photo is much less
manipulated than
previous ones and
brings in a retro style to
match her dress sense
and general aesthetic.
3. The final use of the
familiar font is on this
album. There is also a
return to the simpler
colour scheme and use of
grey. Both of which
makes the audience feel
familiar with the image
on the digipack quickly
and fans of Spektor’s are
likely to quickly
recognise the style.
This Radiohead cover was
released as a single and
uses a Russian propaganda
poster style possibly as a
nod to her first major
album and her roots. This is
quite striking and her
audience is likely to
recognise it as her because
of her uniqueness in being
one of the few famous
Russian-American
singer/songwriters.
A similar red is used
for this single as the
previous one, although
we have moved from a
Russian to a French
style keeping with the
song which has a small
part in French. It has
a more elegant style,
with the silhouette
and the blue flowing
writing.
A more quirky style has
risen here with bolder
colours and text that is
just as eye catching, if
not more, as the photo
which is unusual with
singer/songwriter and
indie folk albums, so
makes her album stand
out in comparison to
other albums/artists of
these genres.
