Writers use position words to indicate spatial sequence. For example, words such as… position words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],… are common spacial signal words.  So are the essential position words such as… essential words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Position words also help you understand the order of the writer’s ideas. They are like a road map for a piece of writing. Imagine trying to drive some place you have never been before without good directions. If the driving directions don’t clearly state where things are in relationship with each other, it’s easy to get lost. Imagine trying to get somewhere following these directions. position words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],essential words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],D irections T urn  onto  C harles  S treet. Imagine trying to drive some place you have never been before without good directions. If the driving directions don’t clearly state where things are in relationship with each other, it’s easy to get lost. Since there are no spacial words, the directions are confusing. Which direction should the driver take on Charles Street? Where’s the gas station? Should the driver turn left or right unto York Road? Where is the house? position words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],essential words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],D irections T urn  onto  C harles  S treet. The person who wrote the directions understand where the driver should go, but the driver will not understand.  position words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],essential words ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],D irections T urn  onto  C harles  S treet. Adding position words, makes the directions much clearer they help the driver know where to turn. And what he or she will see along the way. This way the person reading the directions understands what the writer meant. In the same way understanding position words in a reading selection, can help you understand spacial relationships. that the writer describes. D irections T urn   right   onto  C harles   S treet. Heading  north toward  the  center  of town.  K eep going on  C harles past the grocery store until you see the gas station on your  left , and then turn  left  onto  Y ork  R oad.  M y house is the first house on the  right.
Now that you understand spacial order, you can better visualize what the writer is describing. This will help you picture where different objects and places are in relation to each other.
