2. Personal Life Caterina was born in Pittsburg, PA and graduated from Vassar college in 1991. She co-founded Flickr in 2004 with her husband and it would later be acquired in 2005 by Yahoo!
3. Flickr Caterina was trying to make a game when they made Flickr. It was meant to be a game that they were making in order to make money, and such Flickr came about.
4. Non-profit use of Flickr Non-profits have been using Flickr to get their voice heard since the website started. A great example of this is Code Pink’s page on Flickr
5. Influence on Social Media Flickr has had an influence on social media because it was the first venue that allowed a person to tag something in the picture to make it easier to search for. It also was one of the first venues that allowed notes below the photos to leave for friends, which influenced the comment section of Facebook.
6. Non-Profit Usage Non-profits have started using Flickr.com as a way to get their images shown. It is a great website that allows you to upload a certain MB of photos for free each month, and if it is more than that, you may purchase a membership. It is also great for non-profits because they receive their own URL when they make a username and it is great PR for the organization.
7. Caterina’s Contributions Caterina’s hard work has helped the non-profit community immensely. While social media tools are increasing, she gave non-profits a tool to get the word out there in a world where people do not want to read a lot anymore. She gave a tool that provides a visual, that is user friendly, and easy to find and remember.
