Different types of production briefs
1. Different Types of Production Briefs
Contractual: ‘Involves a signed agreement with stated objectives. If you or the other party
were to break any agreements you would be in breach of contract and could face legal
action’http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Identify_the_different_types_of_briefs_used_in_the_media_industries
This is where a contract is used and signed by everyone involved. In the contract it will
explain what you need to do and if anyone were to break any part of the agreement this
would be breeching the contract and legal action could be taken.
If I was creating a Radio advert, I would get all the information I think would be required this
could be done in person, on the phone or over email. I would be asking for information such
as: How long they want the Radio advert to be, do they want me to change the style of the
advert, if they want they style similar to their other adverts or want me to change it
completely. In doing this I would be receiving information which would help me with
actually putting together the advert and with making sure I create an advert that they would
be happy with. After finding out the information I would work out how much time I have
and divide my time up equally to ensure that I can create the advert before the deadline
without rushing. I would work out what technical skills I need to create the advert such as
what types of programmes I would need experience using such as Audacity or Reaper. Doing
this would make creating the advert less stressful as I would know I have time to finish it
and wouldn’t have to rush it which would also make the advert better standard because I
would have been able to think about it more. This could help me with my career as others
could see my work and ask me to create a trailer for them as my work would be shown to a
wider audience online and on TV.
Negotiated:‘Two parties have differing ideas and a compromise has to be found that
makes both sides happy, sometimes involving a third party (An
arbitrator)’http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Identify_the_different_types_of_briefs_used_in_the_media_industries
If two parties have an idea but they differ from one another, a compromise is found where
both of the parties are happy; the compromise could include part of each of the two parties’
ideas rather than their whole idea. Sometimes a third party could be involved (An
Arbitrator)
If I was making a Motion Graphics Advertisement for a Company I could I would first discuss
what type of advert I am expected to make, if the company doesn’t have any ideas of what
they want me to do, I would ask them questions about what they want me to do. I would
ask if they want me to keep the advert similar to the others, or do something completely
different. Even having this basic information would give me an idea of what I’m expected to
make.
2. Informal:‘More of a verbal agreement between parties with nothing official or in writing,
less formal so to speak’
’http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Identify_the_different_types_of_briefs_used_in_the_media_industries
This is more of a verbal agreement between two parties. The way this works is that nothing
official is written in writing, it is all done by verbal communication.
If I was involved with an informal brief and I was creating a logo for rebranding a company.
This would involve Communication, Time Management, and Technical Skills and could
possibly lead to career progression.
The Technical Skills required would be for me to be able to use programmes such as Adobe
Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. These programmes would be used to create the logo and
in order to make a good logo I would need to be experienced using these programmes.
Managing time would also be important, the reason for this is because not doing it could
result in you not having enough time to create the logo which would then lead to you
rushing in order to meet the deadline which then finally makes the finished design of lower
standard than it could be. Communication is always important; it is an easy way to find
things out, for example: you could speak and find out what type of logo they are interested,
if they want a completely different design or a similar design to the original. Communication
will then make your design more appealing to the company giving you a better chance of
making a good logo. If the company is happy with the rebranded logo it could lead to them
coming back to you in the future or giving you a recommendation to other companies.
Tender: ‘The production company might find out someone is looking for a video. They put
together a brief with a proposal and a budget and send it to the potential client. The client
would look at all the different tenders they receive and choose the one they prefer’
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Identify_the_different_types_of_briefs_used_in_the_media_industries
If a production company finds out that someone is looking for a video to be made and they
want to make the video, they would put together a brief which would include information
such as their proposed idea and budget. This brief would then be sent off to the potential
client. The client would then look through the different tenders which they have received
and decide which one they like best.
If I were to create the video for the company, in order for me to make sure that the video
was the best it could be, there are a few thing which I would need to consider prior to
making the video or during creating the video.
First I would find out what type of video they would like me to make, how long they would
like the video to be, the deadline for the video and how they are expecting the finished
video to look. Doing this would give me the advantage of creating a better looking video and
a more appealing video to the client which would then give the created video a better
3. chance of being chosen by the client. Managing my timewould be important. After
communicating and finding out the deadline for the video I would work out how much time
I have myself to create the video. After I had done this I would then set times for when I
would be working on the video. Creating the video would require me to be familiar with
programmes such as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro. These types of
programmes are more advanced than others with more features, using these programmes
would benefit me as the additional features could help me make the video that the client
could possibly want. Upon completing the video, meeting deadlines and hypothetically
being chosen as the video being used, it could lead to career progression as working on this
could get me recognised by other companies, or I could be considered more by another
company if I have a good reference from this one.
Co-operative: ‘You work alongside other production companies or organisations who also
have a brief therefore your brief has to co-operate with the brief they are working on as
well’http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Identify_the_different_types_of_briefs_used_in_the_media_industries
This is working alongside other production companies as part of a group, each production
company would have a brief so each of their ideas would have to co-operate with each
other. The two companies would have equal rights/benefits and would work together as it
would benefit both of their production companies.
I would first find out all the information I need to get before starting. Following finding the
information I would speak to the other production companies to try and work out a way for
both of our brief to co-operate. This could all be done over the phone or email but would
probably be better done direct conversations. After working out what we are doing we
could then discuss what each of us is doing, and at what time we are doing them. Doing this
will make everybody’s work a lot easier and everyone will have less work to do because it
would be split up evenly.
Formal:‘A formal written document containing specific and precise details about the goals
that needs to be achieved. The brief gets straight to the point and doesn't contain any
unnecessary detail or information. This type of brief is mainly aimed at a group of people
or a business company rather than individuals. A formal brief is not always a legal
document’http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_formal_brief
This is the opposite of an informal brief; there will be a written document (brief) which will contain
specific details about the goal that need to be met. The brief will get straight to the point and will
not contain any unnecessary information. This will usually be used within a group of people or a
business company.
If I was asked to create a trailer for a new video game that hasn’t been released yet, I would speak to
the client and find out all of the information that I needed about the game, such as what footage I
will have to use and how long the trailer needs to be. This information will help me when it comes to
making the trailer for the game. When it comes to making the trailer I would manage my time in
order to meet my deadline, I would plan the trailer and how I am going to put it together before
4. starting, this would help make the final trailer of better standard. I would first create a basic trailer
and then take it to the client and see if they’re happy with it or if they want anything changing, then
I would go and finish the final trailer. I would need the technical skills to use programmes such as the
Adobe series, Premiere pro, After Effects, Photo Shop and illustrator. These programmes will help
me when making my trailer. This could help me with my career as other producers could see my
work and ask me to create a trailer for them as my work would be shown to a wider audience online
and on TV.
Commission:‘This is when a TV broadcaster, such as the BBC, employs an independent
production company to produce a program for their
schedule’http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_commission_brief
This could be used when a TV broadcaster employs an independent production company to produce
a programme for their schedule.
If a production company I was involved in was asked to create the programme for the schedule. I
would get all the information I think would be required by communication, this could be
done in person, on the phone or over email. The information I would be looking for was
what they want the show to be about, how long they want the show to be, if they wanted to
send the listeners a message and what that message is and whether or not they wanted the
show to be pre-recorded or live. These things would give me an idea of what type of show I
would be creating and what type of show that I was expected to make. Dividing up my time
would be important, I would make a timetable for when I would be working on the show,
this wouldn’t involve recording the show unless the broadcaster wanted it to be pre-
recorded. Presuming the show was live I would be working out a basic script which would
help me keep on track. The script would include what I was saying and at what times I
should be saying them. This would help recording the show live as I wouldn’t go off track
and I wouldn’t repeat anything. If the show was being recorded live it would be essential for
me to fully understand how to use the radio equipment which would include the sound
boards, recording equipment and the recording programme. Doing all of these things will
help the radio show be the best that I can be which could then lead to being noticed by a
larger audience which could then lead to work from other companies.
Competition:Similar to the tender brief, a competition will be involved. However, there is a
difference between the two. The main difference is that many companies can be involved whereas
in the tender only a few could be used. The Competition brief will also hold less information and
won’t go into as much detail.
If I was creating a TV advert, presuming all of the adverts footage was already shot and I just
had to put it togetherI would get all the information I think would be required this could be
done in person, on the phone or over email. I would be asking for information such as: How
long they want the TV advert to be, do they want me to change the style of the advert, if
they want they style similar to their other adverts or want me to change it completely. In
5. doing this I would be receiving information which would help me with actually putting
together the advert and with making sure I create an advert that they would be happy with.
After finding out the information I would work out how much time I have and divide my
time up equally to ensure that I can create the advert before the deadline without rushing. I
would work out what technical skills I need to create the advert such as what types of
programmes I would need experience using such as the Adobe series. Doing this would
make creating the advert less stressful as I would know I have time to finish it and wouldn’t
have to rush it which would also make the advert better standard because I would have
been able to think about it more.Working on this could lead to me being accepted by
another company due to a good reference or they liked the work I did on the TV advert.
