4. Salerio and Solanio They were given similar-sounding name to two similar characters and both are talkative and attempts to cheer Antonio up at the beginning of the play.
5. Bassanio Accused of being a shallow, mercenary socialite. However it is true that he is a spendthrift who enjoys making merry.
6. Gratiano Another very talkative friend, witty , bawdy sometimes and rather self-centered but not likeable later when he indulges in some very ugly Jew-baiting of Shylock.
7. Lorenzo Inventive in planning and using the masque as a means of getting Jessica away from her father Shylocks house.
8. LauncelotGobbo He is ill-fed and poorly treated in Shylock’s household where the only bright spot of life is the charming and friendly Jessica. LauncelotGobbo is a country-boy by origin and anxious to improve his lot, he leaves Shylock and skilfully uses his wit.
9. Portia She is beautiful in the way which the Elizabethans prized and she has a nature which is at once finely sensitive and very determined. Feminine in her intuitions, she can also be strong-willed, resourceful, resolute, romantic and witty.
10. Shylock He is a complex character much deeper than the figure of almost farcical caricature presented by Marlowe in his the few of Malta.
11. Jessica She shows a warmth of feeling largely lacking in her father Shylock. Not only does she love Lorenzo, but she shows a gentle and caring response towards LauncelotGobbo.

16. What was the problem in the book and how was it solved? Antonio helped a friend and he himself got into trouble as Shylock requests for a pound of his flesh and Portia came to his rescue and said that if Shylock spills a single drop of blood he will be charged.
17. Did anyone in the book do something you did not like? Why? I do not really like Shylock, although Antonio was very bias towards Shylock, Shylock wanted revenge and when a friend is in need for money (Bassanio), Antonio borrowed money from Shylock and Shylock wanted a pound of his flesh if he does not pay up his debt in time. This request is very demanding can is very evil to do such things.
18. List the five major events in the story in the correct order Bassanio wanted to woo Portia but need money Asked Antonio and Antonio borrowed money from Shylock. Bassanio successfully wooed Portia. Portia disguised as a lawyer and comes to Antonio’s rescue, Shylock will be charged if he spills a single drop of blood Shylock became a Christian to save himself from dying.
20. Did this book give you any new ideas about yourself? Why? I think this book shows me how we treat our friends and the real good friends and bad ones, good ones are like Antonio who cares much about his friend without considering the danger he is in, and it shows that he is very loyal too. We should treat our friends like this so our friends will prefer to being with you and do not be selfish and only care about yourself.
21. What would the main character be likely to do if he/she visited our classroom? I think although our class is rowdy and noisy I think the characters will be friends with our class as we are loyal and we usually help one another selflessly.
22. What lesson did you learn from the story? I think we should be like the characters in the story other than Shylock as we should treat our friend with loyalty and trust and not to be selfish and thus do not care for your friends.
24. If the story happened in a foreign land, compare that country to Singapore. It will be different as there is many social classes to separate the poor and rich, however that’s only in the Elizabeth Era, in Singapore, no such thing will happen as Singapore doesn’t have distinct classes and almost all are the same.
25. Tell five ways the main character is like you. Antonio - is helpful like me as I am always helpful to my friends is loyal like me although some friends might be evil to me I will still treat them well. We are not greedy. We should be happy with what we have. We are willingly to do things for our friends. We are caring to one another.
26. If your story occurred long ago, compare that time with today in a good paragraph. If it was a modern story, compare it with a long time ago and tell what would be the different During Elizabeth Era, people usually worried about heath and sickness as medicine that time was useless and is very hard to obtain and many sickness does not have a specific medicine to it however during this days, we have medicine and it is easily obtain and it has different variety of medicine to different types of sickness.
28. What part would you change in the story and why? I think I will change the part where Antonio promises to loan money to Bassanio as it is totally impossible to find such a friend that is willing to die just to loan a sum of money to marry an woman.
29. Make a radio announcement to advertise the book. Write it out. “Hey!” Shakespeare story is interesting and of different kinds including romantic and others. The characters are interesting and so loyal to be our friends. Read Merchant of Venice and you will realise that there are many friends that are good.
30. Identify one problem in the book and give an alternate solution one not given by the author. I think it is impossible to have such a loyal friend like Antonio, and to make it more real, the story should be not that Antonio immediately agree. Bassinio will try to use other methods to ask Antonio to help him and Antonio does in the end.
32. If you could only save one character from the book in the event of a disaster, which one would it be and why? I will save Antonio as Antonio is very helpful and loyal to friends having him as a friend is a blessing and he is worth it to save unlike Shylock who is so evil to ask a pound of your flesh.
33. Is the title a good one or a poor one and why? I think it is a poor one as it does not relate anything to the storyline about Antonio, Bassinio or any of the characters.
34. Which character in the book would you choose for a friend? Why? I will definitely choose Antonio as he is a very trustworthy, loyal and selfless friend and he is willing to do anything even if he sacrifices himself. Thus he is helpful in any ways.
