2. Look at the Pictures! If your book has pictures, look at them for clues. Sometimes you can tell what the author is saying.

3. S - t – r – e – t – c – h it out! Stretch the word out slowly. Put the sounds together to figure out the word. Say the word m-o-p, stretched out: Mmmmoooopppp Now, say it the regular way. Mop

4. Get your Lips Ready! Say the first few sounds of the word out loud. Read to the end of the sentence and say the sounds again.

5. Chunk the Word! Look for a “chunk” that you know (-ing, -and, -art, -old, -on, etc.). Look for a word part (be-, -er, he-, ca-, etc.) /st/ and /--ing/ spell the word: s-t-i-n-g

6. Other words spelled with the /--ing/ sound. king, ring, sing, wing, bring, cling, spring, string, swing, thing Think of other words with that chunk

7. Skip it, Skip it! Skip the word. Read to the end of the sentence. “Hop back” and read it.

8. Try It Again! Try to reread the sentence. Try a word that makes sense.

9. Ask For Help! After you have tried all of these things, ask for help!
