The magnificent Skellig Michael is one of
only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites
in the Republic of Ireland.
On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock
off the Kerry coast is St Fionan’s
monastery, one of the earliest
foundations in the country. The monks
who lived there prayed and slept in
beehive-shaped huts made of stone,
many of which remain to this day.

Skellig Michael has risen to dramatic
prominence due to its starring role as
Luke Skywalker’s Island Sanctuary
on the planet Ahch-To in both Star
Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
and Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last
Jedi. The decision to film the biggest
grossing movie in U.S. box office
history was made by The Force
Awakens Director, JJ Abrams, in
conjunction with Production
Designer, Rick Carter.
9. Once upon a time…..
And history has shown that, despite its
remoteness, it was the object of Viking
invasions that harassed the defenseless
monks. In some cases they succumbed to
the religion and teachings of the invaders,
such as the Viking Olav Tryggvason, future
king of Norway, who around the year 1000
converted to Christianity on this island.
