My Geography Project on Antrim
1.
2. • Located on the northeast coast of Antrim, near the town
of Bushmills.
• Made up of 40,000 basalt columns
• It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986, and a
National Nature Reserve in 1987.
• 50-60 million years ago, intense volcanic activity
occurred in Antrim
• Molten basalt rock erupted to form a bed of lava. The
lava cooled quickly and contracted, leaving many
pillarlike structures
• The size of the columns is determined by how quickly
the lava cooled
The Legend of Finn McCool (Fionn Mac Cumhaill)
3. • Dunluce Castle is the ruins of a great castle
• It has always been a defensive site, and evidence has
been found of early Christian and Viking occupation of
the area where a fort once stood (400-800 AD)
• The castle was built by Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of
Ulster in the 13th century
• After occupation by the McQuillans, the Clan MacDonnell
of Antrim and the Clan MacDonald of Scotland, the castle
was no longer used
• The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on
either side, which are an important defensive feature
• It was abandoned in 1641 and subsequently fell into
decay
• Dunluce Castle is in the care of the Northern Ireland
4. • The Titanic Centre in Belfast was built to celebrate 100
years since The Titanic's maiden voyage.
• The RMS Titanic was built by Harland and Wolff in
Belfast in 1912 for the White Star Line.
• The Centre is the largest in the world. It has nine
galleries employing a variety of interactive media
including CGI, film, audio, artefacts and full-scale
replicas.
• The Titanic Centre tells the story of the conception of the
Titanic in Belfast (early 1900s), her construction and
launch, the maiden voyage and catastrophic end
• Live undersea exploration centre
where the wreck can be seen
5. • The spectacular sandy beach forms a white
arc/bay between two headlands on the North Antrim
coast.
• The beach is backed by ancient dunes that provide
habitats for wildlife.
• Recently awarded with the 2013 Blue Flag Award,
Portrush Whiterocks Beach has become a popular tourist
attraction
• The limestone cliffs are made of soft, sedimentary rock
that have been carved through centuries into a labyrinth
of caves and arches. Under the road, there are caves,
accessible only from the sea, home to seabirds and a
hunting ground for hawks.
6. • Bushmills is the world's oldest legal distillery,
first established in 1784 by Hugh Anderson
• The distillery is owned and operated by
Diageo PLC, and produces a variety of whiskey
• Despite many difficult times, including the American period of
Prohibition, Bushmills Distillery managed to survive
• It is also a popular tourist attraction and receives around
120,000 visitors per year.
• After a tour of the distillery, visitors are rewarded with a free
sample of Bushmills whiskey
