Editor's Notes

  1. I am Dr. Bette Daoust – my degree is in Business Management of Computing Science and Engineering. So what! Who the heck am I to tell you about LinkedIn? I have several best-selling books on personal networking in 7 different languages I have the limit in the number of connections permitted with LinkedIn. I have hundreds of profile views My posts get great distribution I created a group of 1000 people in 2 days But that is what I did, now I want to show you how to get there as well. Slide 1 5 Simple Ways - Introduction slide   Now you may be wondering why Bill picked me to do this presentation on LinkedIn. I have been around LinkedIn since 2003 - almost at the beginning! So I have gone through a great deal with the platform and many, many changes.   At the start we could only connect with people that we knew directly. That was OK for me as I knew a few people but certainly not a high number! We were limited to 500 at the time so that number was sometimes a bit of a struggle to get there, but somehow I did it in short order. I spent time getting to know the brains behind the scenes and learned from them on how to do it right. The same theories still apply but there are changes in how you can connect.   I have more or less stopped accepting invitations because I am so close to the limit on the number of connections permitted. Today I have 29,827 connections which leaves me little room to add more.   My current tactic is to go through my connections one by one and cull the ones that are inactive or not in my target audience. I have more criteria that I am currently working on so that I can streamline the process. But as you can see, my current process certainly works.   I also have many endorsements as well. Many of them were unsolicited and some were requested. These are important but the testimonials far outweigh the endorsements. Here is where I am building an even better reputation. I have 33 here but they are true recommendations and not hyped up. An area where I still need to improve.   Although I have had 515 profile views in the last 90 days, I still need to work on improving that as well. This really depends on how active I am with the platform. Adding my blog posts and making comments has been a great tactic and putting it to the morning schedule is crucial in order to be consistent.   Since I posted this webinar a couple of times, the interactions have increased. Once again, it depends on the actions you take.   I belong to just over 40 groups and often change these around, depending on the activity and the potential connections I can get. I created my own group and within 2 days I had 967 members. I offered the group to my entire list and the results were not as great as I would like but LinkedIn is often a place for introductions rather than deep discussions. Most people just want to self-promote when it comes to groups, so being picky here is crucial.   I will talk more about all of this as we move on to the meat of why I am here and that is to show you what I do and how you can do the same thing and build your connection base.   BTW - you can build the base very easily, but can you really connect and get business from it. Well, that all depends on how much you want to put into it. So let's get started with what we want to talk about today.
  2. Slide 2 - What to expect on this webinar - besides being prepared for overfill.   I have 5 items I want to discuss and give you tips to use right away. First, what is in a profile? I am going to show you how to optimize your profile for searches and for getting new connections. Some simple ideas to start and a daring one or two to put you in the limelight.   Second, the 3 highly valued targeting techniques. You will be able to use these immediately to find your target audience and connect with them. There are 3 in particular ideas here that will give you a push for better connections.   Third, Is all about your PULSE. Without a PULSE your work you put into LinkedIn will be somewhat diminished. By increasing your PULSE, you will build a better audience. This is so simple, you will probably think that you already knew this, and you probably did!   Fourth, I will show you some easy ways to build connections using messages. Every person you reach out to, will likely want to connect with you using this simple technique.   Last, I will show you open networking techniques that will absolutely skyrocket your connections. The only thing that will hold you back will be your fear of being exposed to such a wide audience.   Are you ready?
  3. 1. Professional photo 2. Work Experience 3. Education 4. Skills 5. Title/Contact Maybe mention company pages and product showcasing Slide 3 - What's in a Profile   I know you are tired of building profiles! You can use the same profiles everywhere as long as you do it right in the first place. A profile is what people will see and make the decision as to whether you are a worthy person with whom they want to connect. If your profile does not provide the incentive, you will be left alone and unconnected.   Another point on the profile, it is not about you, it is about the viewer. Yes, talk about yourself, but talk more about what you can do for them. WIIIFM plus!   I always tell my clients to use a professional photo, unless you are promoting something that does not require a quality image. It is possible to sell ratchet wrenches without one, but a professional photo with the right attire, will go a lot further. People want to do business with those they know and trust. Let them get to know you with the first impression - the photo!   Add a well-designed background image to your profile. In my case, it is my blog that appears in the background. Bill has great graphics, Steve Cartwright has a diagram of his offering. Pick something that has a call to action. This is a missed marketing opportunity if you do not use the banner effectively. It is not just a picture, it is a message.   Your professional headline is crucial. Tell the viewer what you do for them, not who you are. Guess what…they don't care about you, they care about what you can do for them and that is it!   Country and industry is next - Although I work in two different locations, I can only add one here so I chose my home town. The industry is something you have to pick from the list LinkedIn gives you. Pick what your viewers will be looking for if they were to hire you. I am a tech geek but I spend more of my time working the marketing aspect for authors and engineers - therefore I chose Marketing and Advertising, although I do more.   Ok let's move on to work experience. Only you can add this to your profile. I just want you to do it differently. Sure add the companies and your title. Also add what you did for them to improve their performance . I still have to work on this part myself.   One more thing to add with work experience is salting the right keywords into the description or title. For me I added Instructional Design throughout my profile because I wanted to be searched on that key phrase. Keep in mind that the information you put in your professional headline needs to match what you put in for work experience. Enough said.   Now for the Education section. All the degrees, the certificates, the classes you have attended work in this section. Do not limit yourself to your diplomas, add courses here as well. It is not overkill. People want to know you keep up with your education. This is a section where you should be making monthly changes to let reviewers and connections know you are a lifelong learner in your field.   Now for skills. Make a list of absolutely everything you can do with reasonable skill. Do not leave anything out. Take that list and pick out the skills that fit with your profile and the target audience. This is the piece that will get you endorsements. You will see in my profile that the top 10 skills are where I get my endorsements. Skills are the low hanging fruit when it comes to people acknowledging your expertise. This is because they endorse the one skill they are familiar with and not the whole package. Don't be shy here. Be sure to include the professional headline skills as well.   Add other items to your profile so people can get to know you better. You can add interests (include your key phrase here as well), personal details, and how to connect with you. Keep these up-to-date at all times.   One last item here - add all your awards and honors - I have listed my expertise here as well - don't take chances get those key phrases here as well.   Last idea on our profile is your title and contact information. Is it key phrase worthy. Get away for useless titles, use something that catches attention!   I know we have spent some time here but this is so crucial before you get to the next part on adding connections.   Any questions so far?
  4. Slide 4 - 3 highly valued targeting techniques.   It is no secret that being active is a key to increasing the number of connections. There are 3 distinct places to make this happen.   First is the notion of groups. Groups in LinkedIn a numerous and choosing the right ones is a bit tricky. You would think the larger the group, the more impact you will have. Not quite so true..it is the more focused and active the group, the more impact you can have.   Because I focus on authors and speakers, the groups I join have something to do with that target audience. My first go at this was to find large groups of over 30,000 members. You can see my groups at the bottom of my profile. One such large group is the Freelance Writers. I find this group is great for gaining information but not necessarily great for my postings. Although I did announce this Webinar in the group.   The smaller focused groups are far more important for gaining new connections. Here you can have a more meaningful interaction with all the members through the group, but also through messaging, even if you are not first connections. I used groups to gain my initial 500 connections and beyond.   When searching for groups, look for the number of discussions, this is the key to how active that group will be. The more active it is, the more likely you will be able to interact with the other members, something like Bill's forum, the more you interact, the more attention you get. Yes, it is work but it is also fun because you are not selling anything, you are being the go to person for your expertise. Then the connections are easy in an organic kind of way.   I want to use an extreme example for company pages and that is the Coca-Cola company. The page has 832,000 followers and tons of interactions. You may be wondering why this is important - well, you basically want to follow company pages in your space and use their updates to your advantage. As I mentioned before, you want to show your expertise and by following industry leading organizations, you can get the scoop on the news then share it with your groups, and individuals you are targeting!   Do some searching for companies in your industry and follow a few that are posting updates. I know in the publishing industry there is a dearth of updates. Meaning the publishers don't get it when it comes to marketing! That means I have to go outside the industry to get industry news. I tried penguin books and Simon and Schuster to find that the updates are very minimal! What a pity - they are really losing out here!   An easy way to see what is happening with the companies you follow is to Just click on Interests in the menu bar and choose companies to see all the recent updates.   BTW you can create your own company page and become the expert with consistent updates as well. Company pages make it easy for you to keep in touch with followers. These followers are similar to those on Twitter only you cannot follow back! This is a whole other topic!   Posts is next in line as a highly valued targeting technique. Your posts can be original or re-posts. Anything you post can also be sent to your twitter followers at the same time which is an added bonus.   Your posts can simply be your blog articles, why re-invent the wheel here. I have yet to add something that is not on my blog or an article that is somewhere else. I don't want to duplicate any of my effort at all!   This is what should happen here. Prepare your post with a feature image. SEO our image - this step is crucial if you want more connections. If you don't know how to SEO your images, it is time to learn about it. As an aside, image SEO on a simple basis is to ensure the alt text is directed to your URL I have some simple ways to increase SEO for images on the fly but more on this later. Use 2 hashtags at the end of the post. Not all platforms use hashtags but those that do will be able to give you more exposure. And who wants to individualize each post for a particular platform. Create an author resource box that includes your name, your title, what you can do for the readers, and a URL or two as action items. There are so many articles out there that are excellent but lack the resource box at the end of the message. A professional thumbnail of you should also be a part of this resource box. Automate when you can, the places where the post will be placed. If you are reposting, don't just re-post, add your spin to the post including any SEO item you can think of….your goal is to get views for your profile. I often find a post, then create my own post by adding a comment or two, an image that has SEO at the beginning, then including the entire post with acknowledgements, then ending it with my own resource box. More work, but then again, I have more connections than most people. If you are feeling lazy, then create a post with the top 5 posts in your industry with a paragraph and link to each post. Add your intro and resource box plus an image and away you go.   I know I mentioned 3 highly valued targeting techniques and we have done those. I want to add 2 more for the taking, I hope we will have enough time to get all of the material in. If not, maybe we can extend the time or get Bill to offer you the transcript of this program.   I want to talk about group messaging as one of the techniques. Although people in groups are not always your first degree connections, you can still message them one on one. LinkedIn does have its limits on how many messages you can send, but it worth the time you put into it as long as you spend the time targeting the right people. The key here is targeting!   Let's take this one step further. You can invite members of a group to connect with you but only if you do it properly. If you do not, you will be reported as a spammer. Don’t fall outside the lines on this one.   Compose a message that is tailored to the group members.   Go to your group, click the About tab and you will find a whole new set of menu items. Click on the Members tab to get the list of members and their connection level. Your first connections will be listed first then your second connections. Scan through your second connections to find those that fit your client profile.   You will now have a couple of choices, you can Follow them and you can message them. Both choices will get the relationship started. The last choice is to connect with them. This is where you want to go.   I always choose Friend as the option and then compose a personal note on why I want to connect with the individual. I often start with I noticed you are also a member of (name the group) and I thought I would reach out to see if you would like to connect with me. I am also an author , blah, blah, blah. You get the idea.   Never use the standard connection message, only the personal note will get you where you are going! I use friend because we are part of a group together. At one time, you could request a connection because of a group and the option was listed, LinkedIn has since taken that away. Too bad, it made it easier. I just simply use the group as my reason for wanting to connect.   One final targeting technique is to connect with your connections. You can do this in one easy manner by downloading your first connections names and email addresses, importing them to your email service provider, then sending a personal message to each of them. The more you keep in touch, the more they will help you achieve your business goals. The more you give…the more you get as the saying goes.   You can download your connections by clicking on the Connections menu then clicking on settings and under the Advanced Settings sidebar on the right, select Export LinkedIn Connections. The rest is up to you.

  6. Slide 6 - Open Networking   What exactly is an open networker?   An open networker is someone that is willing to connect with anyone that makes a request. Period. No rejections, no questions, no doubts. If you are not willing to be an open networker, then this part of the webinar is not for you, you can go get a coffee and wait until the end before coming back. Just being honest with you. This is not for the faint of heart.   Let's go through some scenarios here. First is gaining connections with your title. If you want connections, add the following to your title LION then your email address all in brackets right after your name. When someone views your profile, they can immediately send a connection request to you. I have since taken mine down because I am at the limit, but it does work!   Next is the open profile, your profile has a section called Additional Info with a section called Advice for Contacting xxx. Put your phone number and email address here with a comment about connecting on LinkedIn. This info is available to the public, so don't put anything here you do not want to have visible.   In addition, find groups that are LION groups. Join at least one and watch the connection requests start. I love these groups as they are very focused on being connected.   Finally, a tip that will absolutely explode your connections is a site called TopLinked.com. This is where you will be able to build your connections in more than just LinkedIn.
