EDWIN MARKHAM
 He was the youngest of 10 children.
 His parents divorced shortly after his
birth. At the age of four, he moved to
Lagoon Valley, an area northeast of
San Francisco; there, he lived with his
sister and mother.
 He worked on the family’s farm
beginning at twelve.
 Although his mother was opposed to
his pursuing higher education, he
studied literature
 Markham was especially interested in
the trials and tribulations of poor
working people.
 Markham even ran away from home
for a short period of time in 1867, and
he did not return until his mother
decided to help finance his studies.
 In 1872 he graduated from San Jose
State Normal School, and in 1873
finished his studies of classics at
Jean-François Millet o was a
French painter and one of the
founders of the Barbizon school
in rural France.
o He is noted for his scenes of
peasant farmers; he can be
categorized as part of the
naturalism and realism
movements.
About the poem has the
following characteristics:
 It has ten syllables in
each line.
 It is a free verse poem.
 Poetic devices are
used.
a) Alliteration (the repetition of
beginning consonant sounds):
"gazes on the ground"; " And on
his back the burden."
b) Anaphora (the repetition of a
word, phrase, or grammatical
structure): "Who made him dead
to rapture and despair... The poem
uses a number of common poetic
devices.

subject. Illustration A should be an
interpretation of how the persona of the
poem perceives him. Illustration B
should show how God intends him to
be. Use the 2nd column to cite lines
from the text to support your
