How does my media product
represent a particular social
group?
Annabelle Parish
Social Class
• The definition of social class is a division of a
society based on social and economic status.
• Within today’s society in Britain there are a
number of different social classes.These
include: Underclass,Working class which can be
split into unskilled and semi-skilled working class
and Skilled working class, Middle class which
again can be split into Lower middle class and
Upper middle clad and finally Upper class.
Magazines and Social Class
• There is a very large number of magazines that
are written around the world, with a percentage
been for music and an even smaller percentage
for Pop music specific magazines. All around the
different kinds if magazines will be aimed at
different social classes, such as classical music
magazines been aimed at middle class and
higher social classes, where as more general
music magazines may be aimed at the working
class level.
My music magazine
• When researching into the different social
classes I feel that my music magazine even
though it is a pop music specific magazine, it
is still classed as more general one due to not
been solely focused on the music itself. Due
to this I feel that my music magazine is
suitable to be aimed at the working class
social class within Britain’s social class
hierarchy.
My magazine and Races
• Due to who the models that are included within my
magazine and the way in which the articles are chosen and
written within my magazine I feel that my magazine is
aimed at Caucasian groups of people mainly, this is
because the articles are written about the western world
and are specific to the western world lifestyle. Also within
my magazine I have only included models that are only
Caucasian. This factor is sometimes within my magazine
due to who was available at the times I was taking my
pictures for my different sections within my magazine, but
in some cases like my front cover where I used my sister it
was done specifically as she is suited to the type of model I
specifically wanted on my front cover.
Urban or Rural
• For my magazine I feel as though it would definitely be a more
urban magazine as it is aimed at people who have an interest
within the pop music industry, which sis majorly teenage girls. The
most common place for a teenage girl to access this magazine is
going to be within an urban area as there will be hundreds if not
thousands within a town that all have similar interests in their
music taste, which means it would be a mistake to not make my
music magazine a mostly urban magazine, as this is where most of
the audience will access it. It may become a rural magazine if it
became a very successful magazine within the industry, but the
only other way that it may become rural is through subscription as
within the rural areas of the country it may be more difficult to find
places to distribute the magazine to that will successfully sell
reasonable amounts of the magazines.
