What is a Pap Smear? A Pap Smear is a test of a sample of cells taken from a woman’s cervix. The test is used to look for changes in the cells of the cervix that shows cervical cancer or conditions that may develop into cancer.
Why is it done??You ask.. A Pap smear is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine your external genitals, vagina, uterus, ovaries and rectum. Although pelvic examinations can screen for reproductive problems or abnormalities, only a Pap smear will detect easily cervical cancer or pre-cancers.
How is a Pap Smear preformed? The Pap Smear is done during a pelvic exam. A doctor uses a device called a speculum to widen the opening of the vagina so the cervix can be examined. A plastic spatula and a small brush are used to collect cells from the cervix. After the cells are taken, they are placed into a solution. The solution is sent to a lab for testing.
How often should you get a Pap Smear? Pap screen testing should begin at the age of 21. Routine screening is recommended every two years for women 21-29 years old.
Conclusion Pap smears are something women get to check to see if every thing is ok in the vaginal area. The male doctors that give the exam say it does not hurt but some women say its painful. Every girl must get a Pap smear at some point in time so good luck!
