In October 2008 no Australian organization was accredited to certify us for
CE SIRIM SNI BCI
- I had to coach potential certifying bodies about the requirements of
these international certifications & WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (non
Tariff barrier rules)
- After Google searches, I knew I needed to efficiently monitor global
trade barrier trends
- I learned that I could only do this by using the above KM social media
tools/strategies

7. In March this year, my 12yr old had an "accident" at home.
We called the ambulance, but with blood spurting from an arterial bleed we drove him to Bulli
ED.
(In fact the Ambos told the boy’s mother that they would not be able to reach him time from
wherever they were further south in the Illawarra, and to meet them at the ED .)
The staff at Bulli ED had packed and torniqued his arm by the time the Ambos came.
He was then transported to Wollongong and on to Randwick for micro surgery.
He now not only has an arm but he has the full use of it.
He would not have made it to Wollongong, he would have bled out in my arms.
We will be forever indebted to our local casualty and their excellent staff.
The boy’s mother said that over the years her family have frequented casualty, their theatres
and wards for various reasons but our latest adventure has a happy ending thanks to Bulli ED
and indeed the entire hospital.

9. Unfortunately past similar campaigns over the
previous decades had not been well
documented. How to capture this historic info ?
Although there were archived on-line news
items, local library on-line material, NSW
Hansard – Communicating with news media ?
A plethora of health bureaucracy info began to
overload us – How to share this in our team ?
Another Co-Convenor, an Indexing specialist,
ploughed through the web content on global
health issues. How to share new info with the
community & lobby decision makers?
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 9
10. Very in depth, traditional Information researching was
done by our Co-convenor
Using Cloud meant that our materials & activities were not
isolated in only one person’s pc
Mobile – smartphones & tablets enabled quick access to
social media when uploading / downloading photos &
content on the go
Half of our Facebook supporters access our site via Mobile
rather than pc – which influences how you post to
Facebook
It’s been interesting to see how CSG & Radio 2GB
controversies have utilised Social Media – were old style
media engagement approaches caught flatfooted ?
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 10
11. QUESTIONS
At a strategic planning session, the author
was tasked with establishing the
collaborative social media for the campaign.
An integrated suite of tools was developed
using mobile & cloud technologies.
Which tools would you use ?
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 11

13. Email, as usual was the catalyst for collaboration.
The initial use of the team Gmail account
collaboratively by the team was a key step
The author (now a Co Convenor) vacated
operation of it within weeks
Handed over to the Convenor to manage.
Media co-convenor used it for media
communications
Notifications tracked activity on social media
sites
Able to hand over managing the account to
successive convenors or acting convenors
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 13
14. Lots of info so would wikis work to manage &
share vast amounts of content ?
Tried Wikia and Wikispaces. Settled on
Wikispaces – simpler
Within 24 hours the Convenor, who previously
had little exposure to wikis, saw their merit and
had signed up to site, planning what content she
would be contributing.
Trust - However concerns about what content
shouldn’t be shared on line saw its use fade
away. So info was transferred to Wordpress pages
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 14
15. Wordpress Blog – main content area
Used to access the information research content
presented in submissions & media releases
Convenor fairly quickly adopted the social tools
enthusiastically, clamouring for Facebook to be
up and running & to mesh seamlessly with
Wordpress.
Had used Posterous, Blogspot & Angelfire and
then needed quick on the job learning about
Wordpress !
Eg how to integrate with other social media and
to use Wordpress pages which meant Google
Drive used less
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 15
16. We used it a little when health problems
meant we couldn’t be face to face – I learned
a lot about its use from other campaigners
Preferred face to face overall so didn’t use it
for meetings very much
Crucial link us with UK Save NHS
National Health Service Campaign
UK campaigner “spoke” at our
Public Rally (interview transcript)
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 16
17. We used Youtube/Vimeo, Wordpress, Twitter
/Hootsuite & Facebook to share information
presented at the Public Rally
“I just can’t get my head around this ” detailed
multi media preso by Save Bulli ED Co-convenor
Caroline Colton (our Researcher & Graphic
Designer) was filmed &shared via Youtube
◦ ABC Journo “this is one slick presentation”
Tumblr – very visual photographic platform
popular with millenials – didn’t work for us

20. Quick appreciation of Twitter as not a mere celebrity
indulgence,
but also quick & efficient communication tool to get
our information out to journalists, politicians, plus
engage with overseas campaigners,
environment scanning tool, not to mention promoting
media releases,
Hootsuite used as main Twitter client – also Facebook
& Wordpress,
Plume used as Twitter client on Android smartphone.
Also our Convenor has adopted Twitter has
communication tool with journo’s & pollies on other
issues personally important to her
Paper.li was more experimental integration of tweets
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 20
22. We knew we had to engage more with the
community - Facebook
◦ A great tool for those who can’t get to meetings– stories
shared
Sharing media releases & information which were
stored in Wordpress blog
Facebook analytics helped us understand our
reach into that part of our community
A tipping point when community started to “own”
the Facebook page – “gives them a voice”
Absolutely pivotal tool
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 22
23. We connected to a sister Save Bulli ER Facebook site
- A “cleaner” Facebook site with a simple message
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 23
24. His Grandson was a
marketing & social media
consultant - running
several companies
–his family did bumper
stickers
– putting them on cars
– supporters grew
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 24
27. Collaborative social media - integrated suite of tools using mobile &
cloud technologies to ensure wider dissemination of information :
Twitter / Plume– engage with news media & politicians
Hootsuite – monitor Health landscape & manage tweets
Facebook Page – engage with community
Wordpress Blog and Pages
Wikispaces – not much use
Gmail – used by team collaboratively
Youtube / Vimeo / Skype – public meeting
Google Drive – not much use
Delicious/Diigo / Tumblr – not much use
Paper.li – used but not widely embraced
Encouraging use of tools by other team members and learn from their
experiences in the tools – so not totally dependent on single team
member ie cover absences and health issues
– definitely progressed, even if not social media experts
Fairfax social media journalist complimented us on our effective social
media campaign
ACTKM 2012 - KAC 27
28. We’re still waiting to hear from the local health board
about the future of our Emergency Dept
And we’ve built local community social capital
◦ Understanding of challenges faced by health around the
globe & how decision makers adopt overseas approaches
◦ Most Campaign details have been captured & documented
able to be leveraged in any future campaigns.
◦ Our Core Team members were exposed to & able to use
social, mobile & cloud tools.
◦ Such tools could be applied to their professional & business
worlds of health, university & information research.
and also for the other community activities in which they are
engaged.
