Who uses their device for EMAIL, PHOTOS/VIDEO, HOW ABOUT PRODUCTIVITY APPZ.
Our research shows each one of us has a different relationship to technology based on our age, geography and often times our companies choices. Whether limiting BYO devices or Embracing BYO devices
Chances are strong that each of you have a device that is used for business purposes, and there is at least one picture child’s first steps or birthday party, at least one email from your new best friend, a recruiter in THE BAY or application, DROPBOX, that has both personal and work data IN THE BOX in front of you.
PERCEPTIONS OF BYOD IS about sorting through complexity, in order to do this properly we need your feedback. Promised to be an interactive session so, We’ll be asking you to USE THIS DEVICE as we pass some questions by you throughout this presentation.
A little complexity Before we dive in…
We sought to validating 24 features several customers and across verticals.
Each had its own complexity…..therefore we have very little concensus, you see…
Enhanced audio and video experience
Mobile contact sharing
Extension mobility
For Design to fullfull these business and user challenges
We were lucky to find 3 key focus areas:
User Experience strategy had to encompass 3 key focus areas to overcome BYOD challenges.
Enhanced audio and video experience
Mobile contact sharing
Extension mobility
On top of this Complexity layer. We’ll take a look at a few irreversible trends driving sweeping changes to the way we use mobile devices…insights from the field, across verticals
Webclick
There are certain trends where we’ll ask you to take out your mobile device to pose a multiple choice question to answer.
Fact or perception
At the end of each trend section, we’ll ask if these trends are “ a fact or perception?” There is no wrong or right answer here, but it will help us understand what is happening in your companies.
Along the way exposing some UX methodology for framing strategies and products.
In today’s Demo, We have the pleasure of having Mr. Reeder, SR. PRODUCT Mgr. provide a STRATEGIC OVERVIEW of the Embrace Strategy. WE HAVE MS Chery Li, who will present the primary use cases for this strategy, and Ms. Hannah Faye Chua eliciting feedback through videos that demonstrate some use cases we’re hoping to understand abit more about to enhance the UX , and during this…
We would like to get your first impression feedback capturing likes and dislikes.
How does that settle with everyone?
If I stay on track the first part should not exceed 45 minutes.

I may design a sheet for folks to fill in as they listen to UX methodology.

embrace byod strategy
BEFORE WE DIVE — IN CAN WE HEAR FROM A FEW FOLKS, WHAT KIND OF THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN YOUR COMPANIES AROUND BYOD?
The first trend is on mobility and its relation to data overlap and likely to be irreversible – if mobility is about staying connected, what happens with the data?
Chief information officers (CIOs) now rank mobility as the number 2 technology priority, according to Gartner. Four years ago it was number 12.
In this a top concern is DATA OVERLAP
as long as people work, they will find clever way to stay connected and productive while mobile.
With the way lines are blurring between work time and personal time, the lines are blurring between the devices in which content is consumed and created AND WHERE
Lets take a look at what ENABLES THIS CHALLENGE. Sale of Consumer Devices
---------------------
WEBCLICK:
Of the three choices, which are of most concern.
Liability
Separating corp from personal – personal activities remain separate from business responsibilities
Mobile device management – provisioning apps, password protection, wiping the device if lost or stolen
There have been a number of lawsuits; A lawsuit currently winding its way in a federal court in Chicago claims that the city owes some 200 police officers millions of dollars in overtime back pay because officers were pressured into answering work-related calls and emails over department-issued BlackBerrys during off-hours.
While this particular case doesn't involve BYOD, there's no question BYOD blurs the line even more between work life and personal life.
------------------
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) has become one of the most influential trends that has or will touch
each and every IT organization. The term has come to define a megatrend occurring in IT that requires
sweeping changes to the way devices are used in the workplace.
It is about end users being able to use the compute and communication
devices they choose to increase productivity and mobility. These can be devices purchased by the
employer, purchased by the employee, or both. BYOD means any device, with any ownership, used
anywhere.
Historically employees were provided with computers that were the most advanced tools available.
But with the explosion in consumer devices, including netbooks, tablets, and smartphones, employees were using the most advanced productivity tools in their work and personal lives.
Employees began asking the IT organization: why can’t they bring these tools to work?
IT initially rejected the idea due to security reasons and the inability to support more than a handful of devices.
Moving to a BYOD strategy allowed employees to use personally owned devices and allowed IT to offer a wider variety of corporate owned devices.
In the last year, the INCREASED SALES OF CONSUMER DEVICES continues persistence by end-users demanding to leverage their tablet computers and smartphones to extend their productivity, even if they had to purchase devices themselves,
Research done by Deloitte in 2011 separates PC (BLUE) from NON-PC sales (Green)
THERE IS a growing demand in the freedom to work your way. Especially, with gen X and Y (28 – 45)
Gartner research predicts 90% of organizations will allow personal devices for work use.
70% of mobile professionals will conduct their work on personal smart devices by 2018.
As a means to test early assumptions we included Ethnographic research as an approach to collecting data.
For those unfamiliar with Ethnography, it is much like a season of “Undercover Boss”, without the make up or extreme disguise. It’s talking or observing people in their natural habitat – everyday life.
For me this often results in a NARRATIVE to communicate user or design challenges TO THE TEAM
NARRATIVE:
“Sam…. carries the latest iPad 2,
which enables his philosophy of having “what he
wants when he wants it.”
When Sam travels for business (which is often), he
likely only carries his iPad and mobile phone, trying
to leave his laptop at home. He expands, by stating
this is “all I need for what I am doing.” With conviction,
he supports this statement by adding that he
has adapters that plug into a screen for presentations,
he has the “dropbox” application downloaded
for document access, syncing software and even an
app.. Called “shotbox” for view live broadcasts over
3G or Wifi.
From this conversation I extracted 4 key insights:
Desires to stay connected even while mobile;
Access to virtual desktop and files through applications;
Takes his tablet to minimize carry-on burden;
Device used to give work presentations and personal endeavors.
Separating data, more consumer devices, work as an activity rather than a place is blurring work and personal time.
Get out your devices a question is next
The next trend is THE PARADOX OF CHOICE — as if more mobility and devices wasn’t enough.
Bombarded by choice, un relenting technological advancement provides the means to multi-task in more depth , where there are more options, AND the options are becoming more complex –
Furthing choices — whether a workplace or a work space Pairs well with 75% of business leaders who believe “in-person” collaboration is critical
Many analysts and experts believe it is unlikely that a large enterprise will be best served by going ALL Mobile. Suggesting the need for both Wired and Wireless devices.
One customer shared with us they were completely wireless as a matter of fact they said, “anything plugged in is considered a step backward.”
Making smart choices in wired and wireless devices; and workplace or work space ever so critical OPTIONS.
Recently I observed, President of Innovation games Luke Holmann launch a game demo, using his ipad and keyboard dock accessory to simulate a laptop, lending to the first insight here…
Mixing touch and tactile input methods. While touch is more intuitive, it sometimes limited in accuracy.
Here, a tactile keyboard is needed to quickly type in a long url
The external screen serves a purpose when there are multiple viewers / attendees.
More complex choices, very little effect.
Have your mobiles handy
To further complexity around the paradox of choice — we’re seeing is Multiple Needs and Multiple Devices with a fragmented experience due to low bandwidth and high device activity on lots of devices —
Which device is of most value to your productivity throughout the work day?
Smartphone
Tablet
Laptop
Desktop
Many more devices will be connected to the network by the same person, often simultaneously, and likely lead to a large increase in connected devices.
It could quite possibly be a game by asking “Is it merely a perception or a reality?”
Probe the audience on “how its real to them?”
Mr Gomez After School Principal has two to three devices each time I see him. Computer plugged in and placed on a rolling cart. He watches security closely, inside / outside both kids and adults.
Next to it our dependable 7920 series wifi phone for calling teachers on campus. And his own Mobile device running Android.

Summarize
A recent cisco sponsored survey that went to 80 Enterprise decision makers, said they do these activities of smart phones and tablets.
Many smartphones and tablets are as capable as laptops and PCs, enabling a new
class of uses and applications.
There is speculation that in the future a single device will be used for all needs: computing, communications, and applications.

Would anyone like to share their primary use for their smartphone or tablet?
We do not think about these activities as Critical until we put them in context. activities on multiple devices; both smartphones and tablets
We had the opportunity to ask how devices are being used at a hospital in Colorado. First off “minimizing the number of devices makes their lives simpler.”
Caretakers often went against company policy to carry their own personal mobile devices while on duty. Finding clever ways to carry them.

In a retail setting we heard “DESKTOP SPACE IS A PREMIUM, there isn’t room for another device to sit next to the desk phone.”
Using an observation framework AEIOUS : A – ACTIVITIES like getting attacked by a BEAR, E – Environments SUCH AS THIS Hand crafted desk, I – Interactions, Phone, Computer , Pen or Bow and ARROW, O- Objects information stuck to the desk , U – Users usually many end users from Retail experts to Store manager.

Frost & Sullivan3 cited significant investment and innovation in the IP endpoint space. The analyst said that, "Many vendors are launching new models and enhancing their product portfolio; transforming phones into more intelligent devices with touch-based displays, HD voice, video capability, and functionality beyond basic telephony".
A variety of job roles and tasks create a variety of needs making End users a major stumbling block for unified communications managers who want to transition to soft phones.

organize thoughts better
The Future Is All About enabling choice but goes beyond the Desk phone and Beyond just voice.
In an Economist Report titled Power of in Person – 53% STRONGLY AGREE THAT VIDEO ENABLES RICHER AND MORE PRODUCTIVE BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS.
Executives want video for better work-life balance.
Adding to it
The revolution in enterprise communications has resulted in new ways for companies to increase productivity and build competitive advantage — whether BYOD or Company provided. Choice will be based on the interoperability of basic and advanced functionality across each work space.
77% of executives say collaboration technologies improve speed of access to knowledge.
One mid-market customer told us they give the latest iPad to every employee as part on their onboarding package. When we ran a concept by them, they ranked WIFI DIRECT / AND SEAMLESS MOVEMENT BETWEEN MOBILE DEVICE AND STATIONARY DEVICEs AS MUST HAVE TECHNOLOGIES.
With the growing expectation of being able to access content on any screen, here is a scenario —
Right to left – imagine your running ANYCONNECT so getting email and calendar invites on the road, AND ITS COMMON… on your way to the office you pull in to a gas station to top off the tank. As you fill up you hear that ole familiar beep so you dare yourself to glance at your screen — you’ve received an urgent invite to demonstrate a new product concept to a group of engineers, IN CHINA. This is the only time they can meet. You finally get to the office and quickly access your files through your virtual desktop. You join the webex on your laptop and HAVE IT CALL YOUR DESKPHONE for quality utilizing the external monitor and camera to see everyone present for the demo.

someone can use multiple devices for the same tasks like: lookup / find, communicate,
edit/create, check-in/status, and discover/explore.

With the growing expectation for accessing content, there is a shift toward moving data ACROSS MULTIPLE SCREENS from one device to another seamlessly and intuitively; and very likely wanting to use best suitable screen for the information WHETHER IT BE TOUCH SCREEN OR NOT.
