We the students of Maria’s Day
School,class 9(B)have made a
powerpoint presentation to show the
causes and the impact of Renaissance
in different fields of human life during
the period of Renaissance.
The word Renaissance means ‘rebirth’ or the
revival of the study of the Greek and the
Roman Classics.
According to John Conard, during the period
called Renaissance most of the Western
Europe turned again to the culture of the
ancient Greeks and Romans.
In the words of H.A. Davies," The word
Renaissance signifies the rebirth of freedom-
loving, adventurous thought of man which,
during the middle ages, had been faltered and
imprisoned by religious authorities
India’s first Prime Minister,Pt. Nehru said, "The
Renaissance means the revival of learning and
development of art,science,literature and
European languages.
>>New Secular Hunger for Discovering Texts
The courts and monasteries of Europe had long been repositories of old
manuscripts and texts, but a change in how scholars viewed them stimulated the
massive reappraisal of classical works in the Renaissance.
>>Reintroduction of Classical Works
While there were classical texts in western Europe at the start of the Renaissance,
many had been lost and existed only in the east, in both Christian Constantinople
and Muslim states. During the Renaissance many key texts were reintroduced into
Europe, whether by merchants taking advantage of the new hunger for old texts
>>The Printing Press
A hunger for forgotten texts may have developed in Europe, but it was the new
printing press that allowed these works to be mass produced, feeding a much
wider audience than the old hand written methods could ever have hoped to
reach.
>>Decline of Feudalism
The Renaissance was able to flourish because the Feudalism was declining. The
cause of decline of feudalism was the rise of middle class and their support to the
kings.
>>Occupation of Constantinople by the Turks
In 1453, the Turkish Empire occupied Constantinople, the capital of Byzantine
Empire (Eastern Roman Empire of ancient times). Secondly, the Constantinople
was great center of knowledge, philosophy and art. The Turks loved to fight but
they had no love and utility for anything that could enhance their knowledge.
>>Scientific Inventions:
The scientific inventions became the rise of Renaissance and decline of
superstition which had clouded the brain of medieval Europe. New geographical
discoveries were made. The world was shown as round body and sun was proved
Map during Renaissance period
In the middle ages Literature was dominated by religion and was
written in Latin. But the Renaissance writers wrote about man, his
interests and nature. They became interested in this world rather
than in the future life as was the case with scholars of the Middle
Ages.
>>Literature in Italy-Machiavelli was great political writer of Italy.
Dante’s Divine Comedy is an epic poem. Petrarch, great scholar and
writer, has been called “the father of humanism.”Aristo and Tasso
were also famous poets. Boccaccio was the father of Italian prose.
Great works are Decameron,Livy,The Prince and more.
>>Literature in England-English literature reached its height during
this period.Chaucher was the father of English poetry. Thomas More
was the author of Utopia. Other great English writers were Francis
Bacon, Shakespeare and Ben Johnson. Great works are Paradise
Lost,Faerie Queene,Canterbury Tales.
>>Literature in France-Francois Rabelais and Michael de Montaigue
were strong French poets and essay writers. François Rabelais tried
to make fun of the prevailing corruption in the nobility and clergy by
using satire both in prose and poetry .Montaigue revolted against
the authority and the tyranny and earned the title of “First Modern
man.”Great works are Pantagruel and Heroic deeds of Gargantua.
>>Literature in other countries-In other European countries like
Germany,Holland,Spain and Portugal literature flourished a lot.
Martin Luther contributed a lot to German literature. Erasmus was
the greatest Renaissance scholar of Holland. Cervantes was a great
writer from Spain. Lope de Vega was the famous dramatist from
Spain. Portuguese writer Camoens described the wonderful voyages
of Vasco-de-Gama.
The Renaissance which started in Italy and spread to other countries of
Europe, left a deep impact on art, architecture, science, and above all
on human thinking.
In the field of art Renaissance led to a huge improvement. The
themes were religious. The Italian painters Cimalue and Giotto paved
the way for a new school. Leonardo da Vinci was a versatile genius of
Florence. He was a painter, sculptor, engineer and a scientist. His
Monalisa,The Last Supper, The Virgin and the child are the
masterpieces of art. Raphael was also a renowned painter and poet.
The sculptors of this age carved faces, hands and draperies. Lorenzo
Ghiberti made the doors of Baptistery .Michael Angelo was famous for
his Moses and Pieta. Great churches like St.Peters and St.Paul were
built in this period.
In the field of science Renaissance too played a huge role. Copernicus
proved that the earth was round and the earth moves around the sun.
Galileo invented a telescope. Sir Isaac Newton discovered the Law of
Gravitation. Gilbert paved the way for the study of electricity. Stevin
discovered the law of parallelogram of forces. Vesalius and Harvey laid
the foundation of modern anatomy. Paracelsus proved a close
connection between medicine and chemistry and used chemicals for
medicinal purposes. Descartes devised analytical geometry.
Renaissance was also one of the reasons which led to Reformation.
After the Renaissance began people began the people began to
