2. WHAT IS SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO ? HOW IS IT
DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL HARDWARE
RADIO?
Software Defined Radio(SDR) is a
wireless communication device in
which all of the signal processing is
implemented in software.
SDR defines a collection of
hardware and software technologies
where some or all of the radio’s
operating functions(also referred to
as physical layer processing) are
implemented through modifiable
software or firmware operating on
programmableprocessing
technologies(FPGA,DSP,PSoC).
4. ISSUES WITH TRADITIONAL RADIO
These Radio systems were designed to communicate using one
or two waveforms.
Two groups of people with different types of traditional radios
were not able to communicate.
Different set of H/W for different types of radio communications,
which limit cross-functionality and can be only modified through
physical intervention.
This results in higher production costs and minimal flexibility in
supporting multiple waveform standards.
By contrast, Software Defined Radio(SDR) technology provides
an efficient and comparatively in expensive solution to this
problem , allowing multimode, multi-band and/or multi-functional
wireless devices that can be enhanced using software upgrades.

6. APPROACH
PSK is considered an efficient form of data
modulation because it provides the lowest
probability of error for a given received signal ,
when measured over one symbol period.
Hence PSK finds widespread use in both military
and commercial communication systems.
The modulation scheme used for this project is
Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying(4PSK)
The 4PSK waveform will be developed using Xilinx
system generator & Matlab , Simulink tools and
implemented on the Virtex-6 Field Programmable
Gate Array(FPGA) of SDR platform.
7. The objective of the project is to develop and
deploy the waveform on Virtex-6 FPGA of SDR
platform
The performance of the waveform is estimated by
Bit Error Rate(BER),Eye diagram and Constellation
diagram.
8. FUTURE SCOPE
Presently SDR is being developed for Defence purpose.
The main reason why SDR came into picture is that they want to
develop a radio such that they can communicate with each other
irrespective of Frequency band limitations
This can be achieved by SDR which eliminates different kind of Radio
hardware for different RF bands.
For commercial purpose SDR has wide range of applications which we
can see in near future.
