A rhombic antenna is a broadband directional wire antenna co-invented by Edmond Bruce and Harald Friis, in 1931, mostly commonly used in the high frequency (HF) or shortwave band.
3. BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Co-invented by EDMOND BRUCE & HARALD
FRIIS.
It is broadband directional antenna.
Used in HF (high frequency, also called shortwave)
ranges.
4.
5.
6. STRUCTURE DETAILS
It consists of four straight wires arranged in form
of rhombus and terminated by resistor
Rhombus is equilateral parallelogram with two
opposite acute angles
Mounted horizontally and placed at λ/2 above
ground
7. TECHNICAL DETAILS
It is based on principle of TRAVELLING
WAVE RADIATOR
Also known as “Diamond Antenna” OR
“Travelling Wave Antenna”
8. TECHNICAL DETAILS (CONTD.)
Directional Property
The fields in same direction is additive
Fields in opposite directions are self
cancelled out
12. ADVANTAGES
It can be used in MUSA (Multiple Unit
Steerable Antenna) System
It operates over wide range of frequencies
It is suitable for rapid switching
It is highly directional
13. ADVANTAGES (CONTD..)
Relatively Higher Efficiency
Easier to construct
High Gain can be achieved
Input Impedance & Radiation Pattern are relatively
constant
Radiation efficiency is 40-50% which can be
enhanced to 70-80 %
14. DISADVANTAGES
Requires large space for installation
Low Transmission Efficiency
Relatively Larger Side Lobes
It is not perfectly bi-directional
15. APPLICATIONS
Radio Communication
Short Wave Radio Broadcasting
Long Distance Communications
Point to Point Communications
High Frequency Transmission And Reception
