Air pollution and water pollution

  1. 1. Topic : Air Pollution and Water Pollution
  2. 2. What is Air Pollution? • Air supplies us with oxygen which is essential for our bodies to live. • There are several main types of pollution . These include smog, acid rains, the green house effect, “hole” in the ozone layer. • One type of air pollution is the release of particles into the air.
  3. 3. • Another type of pollution is the release of noxious gases. • Pollution also needs to be considered inside our homes, offices, and schools.
  4. 4. Outdoor Air Pollution
  5. 5. • Smog is a type of large scale outdoor pollution. It is caused by chemical reactions between pollutants derived from different sources. • Cites are often centers of these types of activities
  6. 6. Acid rains • It’s caused when a pollutant combines with droplets of water in air. • The effects of acid rain on the environment can be very serious.
  7. 7. Greenhouse effect • It generally comes from the build up of carbon dioxide is gas in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is produced when fuels are burned. • In this type of pollution sun rays go into the atmosphere and they are trapped by greenhouse gasses. So the temperature on the earth raises.
  8. 8. Hole in the ozone layer • It is another result of our activities affect the stratosphere. • Releases of CFC from heating, aerosol cans refrigerator equipment removes some of the ozone, causing “holes”.
  9. 9. Indoor air pollution • It’s more dangerous than the outdoor pollution, because we do everything in enclosed environments where air may be restricted. • There are many sources of indoor air pollution : Tobacco smoke, cooking and heating appliances, and vapors from building material.
  10. 10. Health effects • Some individuals are much more sensitive to pollutants than others. • Air pollution can affect our health in many ways with both short and long term effects.
  11. 11. Prevention • Air pollution prevention efforts of companies have generally focused on waste reduction, reuse and recycling • So to solve these problems and to get over them we can change our lifestyles. • If we do these simple things we could have a better world.
  12. 12. Water Pollution • Water pollution occurs when energy and other materials are released into the water, contaminating the quality of it for other users.
  13. 13. Different Causes of Water Pollution • Marine Dumping • Industrial Waste • Sewage, mainly from households • Nuclear waste • Underground storage leaks
  14. 14. Effects of Environment • Toxic water • Thermal heating • Our sources of water
  15. 15. Effects on Humans • Diseases caused by : • Drinking contaminated water • Swimming in polluted water • Contact with chemically polluted water
  16. 16. Effects on Animals • 200 turtles in Australia’s surround waters die each year
  17. 17. • Birds and mammals become coated with oil.
  18. 18. Turn off running water
  19. 19. Do Not Flush List • Cigarettes • Cotton Swabs • Diapers • Medication • Needles • Paper Towels • Wipes etc.
