Course Description
This course has been developed to provide an understanding of the geometry and hydrocarbon potential of clastic depositional systems and facies, and how they are affected by such important features as basin configuration, tectonics and eustasy. Each of the major clastic environments is covered in terms of lithology, facies, log response and reservoir quality and the depositional models related to seismic sequences. Important basin scale diagenetic changes are examined to illustrate the effect on reservoir quality. The course includes extensive practical exercises.
Key learning objectives
- Interpret clastic depositional environments using data from cores images, cutting images and wireline logs
- Apply new sequence stratigraphic concepts to clastic reservoirs
- Correlate wells using knowledge of depositional environment
- Predict reservoir size, shape, trend and quality

Here is what past learners have to say about this training course: -
"It was overall a nice experience. Detailed explanations were given by the instruction and there were hands-on exercises on samples,
processes etc” Petrographer-Sedimentologis, Core Laboratories Int BV
“Very informative examples given by Carol are relevant and excellent. Course is too compact, almost as if it is for a 2 weeks length course.
Do extend the time but maintain course content” Jr Geoscientist, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Malaysia
“A very useful course. The trainer is very knowledgeable in the subject and I find that her explanation can be well understood” Junior
Geologist, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Malaysia
“Great eye opening review of geological facies and seismic interpretation” PP, SC

Who should attend?
The explorationist searching for sandstone reservoirs must have a good understanding of the controls on sand distribution
and geometry within various depositional settings. The course is aimed at exploration geologists and geophysicists
involved in clastic exploration studies.
Course Contents:
Clastic facies analysis and depositional
environments
Principles of facies analysis; depositional environments and
facies sequences, ancient and modern - desert, fluvial, deltaic,
estuarine, marine shoreline, shallow marine shelf and deep
marine environments; geometry of clastic reservoirs;
depositional modelling and mapping. Integration of the models
with tectonics and seismic sequence stratigraphy.
Log response in Clastic Squences
Core logging; lithology determination from wireline logs; core to
wireline log correlation; palaeoenvironmental mapping..
Clastic Petrography and diagenesis
Detrital mineralogy and texture; diagenetic petrography -
recognition and quantification, cement types, porosity
destruction and enhancement; diagenetic/porosity modelling
and mapping.
Exploration sedimentology in play
fairway mapping and basin analysis
Methods of basin-wide correlation and layering and the
production of isochore, N:G, porosity and permeability maps for
use in play fairway definition.
Assessment in clastic reservoirs

About your Expert Trainer: Carol Hopkins
Carol is a Senior Project Scientist and the Manager of the Training Department at Robertson CGG Company, her first
degree is in Geology and Environmental Science and she is completing a PhD focusing on the sedimentological,
depositional and environmental indicators of trace fossil preservation in reservoir sands of the northern North Sea.
Carol has 16 years experience of leading field trips and teaching geology to a variety of user groups, including 6 years
teaching undergraduates, and was a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Central
Lancashire for 3 years. She has conducted fieldwork in the Locharbriggs and Hopeman Sandstone Formations, Scotland
and Coconino Sandstone, Arizona, USA, and led fieldtrips in the US and many areas of the UK. In addition, Carol has
lead university regional geology day schools and has comprehensive experience in course and study programme writing. She has always
enjoyed making science more accessible to the public and devised and taught night school courses on geology. Working with clients from
different backgrounds has allowed Carol to develop novel ways of demonstrating difficult geological concepts which work well in the
training environment.
Carol has extensive experience of delivering courses and workshops to a wide range of nationalities in Clastic and Carbonate Reservoir
Geology, Wireline Log Interpretation, Integrated Sequence Stratigraphy, Basin Analysis and Exploration & Appraisal workshops. In
delivering the Exploration Team Management Workshop she has project managed and taught key principles and modules on project
planning, data collection/collation, geophysical assessment, stratigraphy and facies mapping, source rock facies and hydrocarbon
generation, play fairway mapping, risking and prospect evaluation. She has also taught Petroleum Geology for Non-Geologists and
Introduction to the E&P Business. Carol’s knowledge and enthusiasm for instructing is reflected in consistently being rated as excellent
by trainees and clients specifically requesting her participation in courses.
