2. OBJECTIVE
By the end of this lecture you can be able to :
•Know the nomenclature of tooth
•Identify the common types of tooth numbering system .
•Know why we used this numbering system

3. DENTAL NOMENCLATURE
By words
•Set: Deciduous or permanent
•Jaw: Maxillary or mandibular
•Side: Right or left
•Order within a class
• Central or lateral
• First/second/third
•Class: Incisor/canine/premolar/molar
Example : permanent mandibular right central incisor

5. Of the many systems, the three most commonly used will be
described.
A.Palmer Notation Method
B.Universal Numbering System
C.FDI System

6. • Numbering systems in dentistry serve as abbreviations.
Instead of writing out the entire name of a tooth, such as
permanent maxillary right central incisor, it is much simpler
to assign it a :
• Number
• letter
• symbol
Moamer Gabsa- Alneelain university
9. • Approved by American Dental Association in 1947
• Tooth is represented by a number 1 – 8 (permanent) or a letter
A – E (deciduous)
• Two lines; indicates which quadrant the tooth belongs to
• a horizontal representing the occlusal plane
• a vertical representing the midline
• Examples:
• Permeant Maxillary right central incisor
• Deciduous Mandibular left second molar

22. •Proposed by FDI & adopted by WHO
•Each tooth is allocated a two-digit number; the left
designates the quadrant and the right designates the tooth
order
•Examples
• Mandibular right permanent canine 43
• Maxillary left deciduous lateral incisor 62

28. • Some times we used the hash (#) before the two digit (FDI
system) to differentiate between universal codes and FDI codes
• #22 = permanent maxillary left lateral incisor
• 22 = permanent mandibular left canine
