        Share books that have speech bubbles, signs in the pictures,
                 words hidden under flaps, or unique font.

Pandell, Karen. Where’s Stretch?
Yang, James. Joey and Jet.



                           Acting makes language fun,
                and it helps us remember and understand words!

See the little puppy dog              (hold up one fist)
See the little cat                    (hold up the other fist)
Puppy goes to sleep just like that    (put head on hands, close eyes)
Kitty sneaks up quietly               (move the “cat” fist close to the “dog” fist)
Tickles puppy’s chin                  (tickle the “dog” fist with one finger)
Puppy wakes up startled               (hold “dog” fist open, fingers stretched)
Let the chase begin!                  (have one fist chase the other)



    Draw the child’s attention to printed words in their surroundings.
             Together, make and write your own signs, too!

Hey diddle diddle                               (dance)
The cat and the fiddle                          (pretend to play a fiddle)
The cow jumped over the moon                    (jump)
The little dog laughed to see such sport        (bark/laugh)
And the dish ran away with the spoon            (run in place)



                            Point out individual letters to your child.

          Using pre-cut images of dogs and cats, ask the child to take away certain pictures until
          only one remains: For example, “Take away the cats. Take away the dogs that have their
          tongues out. Take away the brown dogs. Take away the dogs with spots. What kind of
          dog is left?”

          Have fun using songs and music as a background for actions. For example, try “Cat
          Stretch” from Animal Walks by Georgiana Stewart.


                    Your child will develop vocabulary comprehension,
                       motor skills, sorting skills, and imagination.
