9Emotions & Feelings (We are a family)
We use the reciprocal pronouns each
other and one another when two or
more people do the same thing.
Traditionally, each other refers to two
people and one another refers to more
than two people, but this distinction is
disappearing in modern English.
Peter and Mary helped one
another.
= Peter helped Mary and Mary
helped Peter.
We sent each other Eid
messages.
= We sent them an Eid message
and they sent us an Eid message.
They didn’t look at one another.
= He didn't look at her and she
didn't look at him.
We also use the possessive forms each
other’s and one another’s:
They helped to look after each other’s
children.
We often stayed in one another’s
houses.
NOTE: We do not use reciprocal
pronouns as the subject of a clause.
Fill in the blanks with each other
or one another.
a-She looked at them and they looked at her.
-They looked at ...............
b-Paula sent Paul text messages and Paul sent her
back text messages.
-They sent ............... text messages.
c-We gave them a present and they gave us a
present.
-We gave ............... presents.
c-He wore his brother's clothes and his brother
wore his clothes.
-They wore ...............'s clothes.
d-My brother and I drove you mad and you drove
us mad.
-We drove ............... mad.

10Emotions & Feelings (We are a family)
We use quantifiers when we want to give someone
information about the number of something: how much or
how many.
Sometimes we use a quantifier in the place of a
determiner:
Most children start school at the age of five.
We ate some bread and butter.
We saw lots of birds.
We use these quantifiers with both countable and
uncountable nouns:
all any enough less a lot of lots of
more most no none of some
Some quantifiers can be used only with countable nouns:
both each either (a) few fewer neither several
Some quantifiers can be used only with uncount nouns:
a little (not) much a bit of
And, particularly with abstract nouns such as time, money,
trouble, etc:, we often use:
a great deal of a good deal of
