MOOCs have been described as having the potential to make education much more accessible to many who previously could not afford it. However, the production costs that have been reported in the past have led many to suggest that they cannot be financially sustainable (Hollands and Devayani, 2014). If so, MOOCs will not emerge in topics with more narrow appeal such as in specialized topics or in minority languages (Woruba and Abedin, 2015). This presentation will give an overview of the Erasmus+ funded Locomotion Project which between 2015 and 2017 built and delivered the MOOCs4all MOOC; “Making MOOCs on a Budget”, to disseminate techniques on how to cheaply build an open course. It will also discuss the relatively modest uptake of the MOOC and barriers, other than cost, inhibiting the creation of MOOCs and invite contributions from the audience on how these can be overcome.

Workshop at City University Learning and Teaching conference, 21st June 2017 This workshop will share best practice from other global practitioners on how the Echo360 system can transform the lecture experience for staff and students. By focusing on how this can improve student satisfaction, retention and outcomes, it also strongly relates to the other theme of ‘supporting student success’ The relevance of the lecture in mainstream education is now under greater scrutiny as institutions seek to make educational programmes more relevant to a new generation of discerning learners (JISC, 2016). When we teach in class, how do you know who is confused, who is bored, who hasn’t even bothered to attend, and perhaps more importantly, who has learnt anything? And how can we engage with learners beyond the classroom to stimulate inquiry, collaboration and feedback in a seamless educational experience? This workshop will demonstrate how one answer is to reinvent the lecture, by integrating powerful new video, engagement and analytics tools, whilst retaining the valued teacher-learner interaction in teaching spaces. The Echo360 active learning platform empowers learners to engage more fully with teachers and each other before, during and after class. This approach to teaching also equips instructors with vital feedback on how learners are progressing, with powerful engagement metrics giving staff rare insights into the teaching-learning dynamic of a lecture (Rienties & Toetenel, 2016). Evidence is now emerging that this mode of teaching can have a significant impact on critical learning measures, such as early warning of student failure (Samson, 2016), boosting retention (HEC, 2016), whilst increasing learning gain and exam scores (Montpetit, 2015). Students also value their ability to control the pace, place and mode of their learning (Gosper et al, 2008; Leadbeater et al, 2013), whilst receiving more immediate feedback on their progress (JISC, 2016). Together, these flexible pedagogical tools have the potential to transform learning in all modes of teaching and training, both in the class and beyond.

The Rethinking Education conference focused on the need to design a future education and skills system that will enable people to develop the knowledge and skills need for the labour market, for personal development and for societal goals. This presentation focuses on the advantages and challenges of massive onopen online courses (MOOCs) for teaching and learning, with a focus on the UK platform, FutureLearn.

This talk offers insights into the current policy 'churn' in the training of both primary and secondary teachers in England, and identifies a gap in provision - with schools spending increasing time developing teachers 'in-house', the ongoing continuous professional development (CPD) of the new entrants to the profession falls between the more formal offerings during in service training days (INSET) and the needs expressed by the trainees/NQTs themselves. Drawing upon the experience of a single University provider of trading in the east of England, covering a wide geographic area and liaising with well over 200 partner schools, three initiatives will be highlighted, critically examined and the implications discussed in the light of limited resource, potentially dis-engaged teachers in their first year in school (only 62% are teaching one year after qualifying) and the need to offer CPD in a more engaging, relevant and accessible manner. The Open Education Resource initiative offers engagement from a local to global stage; access to experts from different countries, and, significantly, offers educators from the Southern Hemisphere access to materials and resources they can share, opportunities to contribute to research initiatives and a forum to make their voices heard. Wider links to work based learning across professions are being explored in my new role at Bournemouth University.
