Mainframe customers require ability to quickly
correlate and fix problems across applications
Islands of monitoring and automation lead to
potentially more outages and higher costs
• Low automation degree
• Problems crossing monitors hard to diagnose due to
lack of correlation or drill down
• Higher education, installation and maintenance costs
• Less flexible sysprog and operations specialists
Customer challenges
• Performance number values – what is good versus bad
• How to find correct thresholds
• Problems detected in time versus flooded with
exceptions
• Identify problems before they cause an outage
• Quickly finding root cause

Lack of automation can increase costs and risks
5
 Many shops only automate IPL,
messages, and shutdown
 Recovery automated only for
single resources without
dependencies
 Complex recovery or moves
done by operators leads to
higher effort and recovery time
 Operators not alerted about
monitor or automation
exceptions
 Performance problems not
solved by automation

Integration Dashboards
 Besides SA Data you can create integration dashboards showing
views from other IBM products as well as 3rd party data
 Create dashboards displaying data/views from many different sources. E.g.
o Using UI data providers from Tivoli products, such as TBSM, OMNIbus, ITM,
OMEGAMON, NetView
o View customer data using Impact or TDI (TDI is shipped with JazzSM and contains a
JDBC and File Connectors by default)
o Display a web-based GUI by refering to an external URL in the Web Widget
o Content Box deployed in DASH in
which customers can implement their own views
 Widgets can be linked, including
implementing transformations of
event data from a source data
provider to a target data provider

Analysts already agree that OMEGAMON
V5 provides value to clients
On OMEGAMON moving to simplified architecture and a common view across multiple
domains, Rich Ptak of PNA commented, "This is an important and much needed enhancement.
We’ve heard consistently – there is a need for this kind of integration. Consistent interface – a
couple of years ago, some people liked to be in a silo and just toss things over to someone else.
But, they can’t live that way anymore.” PNA also gave IBM high marks for doing so without
losing functionality.
On OMEGAMON Enhanced 3270 User Interface, Joe Clabby with Clabby Analytics
commented: What you've done to your 3270 interface is kind of a "wow"! I'm not a 3270 fan and
I love what you've done with it"

shows they have libraries that were created 30 years ago
and are still being used !
 z/OS upgrades typically add new software releases but also
retain the old too – evolutionary
•Different to Distributed where hardware upgrades are common
every few years with software freshly installed – revolutionary
 How can you safely move users off old product releases in
an environment SHARED by thousands of users ?
• Non-TADz customers
o Rely on site experience and educated guesswork
o Exposed to license compliance violations
o Exposed to product support difficulties

Detecting network problems
OMEGAMON® XE for Mainframe Networks works with System Automation and the
NetView® programs to automatically collect diagnostic information when network
problems occur.
You can use the OMEGAMON XE for Mainframe Networks product to detect
session setup failures and response time problems.
When detected, OMEGAMON XE for Mainframe Networks can send an event to
System Automation for z/OS® which triggers the following actions:
 Collects snapshot data
 Starts NetView TCPIP packet traces, stopping them after the problem is resolved
or times out
 Writes NetView log messages
 Captures important messages for presentation on the NetView console and on the
Tivoli® Enterprise Portal.

IMS scenario : Business value and technical solution
Business value
 Ensuring IMS meets committed response time target
Technical solution:
 IMS transaction queuing that lead to response time problems are
detected by OMEGAMON XE for IMS and sent to SA z/OS.
 SA z/OS starts another IMS Message Processing Region which can
reduce queuing
 Inform operators (SA z/OS and TBSM)
 If problem persists, alert IMS owner and stakeholders via SA IOM

135
IMS configuration
 2 Message Processing Regions (MPP)
 Message Processing Region 2 should only be started when the Input
queue length growth of Region 1 is above threshold for any transaction
 In a real environment there could be more Message Processing Regions
© 2015 IBM Corporation
z Systems
Software
IBM Service Management Suite for z/OS
136
Implementation
 On IMS startup SA z/OS activates a OMEGAMON XE for IMS situation
that queries the Input queue length growth
 When the threshold is exceeded
• updates the SA z/OS IMS monitor resource health status to WARNING
which makes the problem visible for operators
• triggers the startup of the 2nd Message Processing Region
• sends an acknowledgment to ITM that Automation is in progress
 After 5 minutes SA z/OS queries OMEGAMON XE for IMS whether the
Input queue length of the 1st Message Processing Region is below
threshold
 If it is below threshold SA z/OS sets the status of the OMEGAMON XE
for IMS situation to normal
 If not SA z/OS sends an alert via IBM Tivoli System Automation for
Integrated Operations Management
 TBSM is notfied upon every status update
 On IMS shutdown SA z/OS deactivates the OMEGAMON XE for IMS
situation
